Episode 174: Icky Pedia #105
Once upon a time I had an ex-boyfriend who was into monster girl stuff. He used to read this porn manga that was guys who were in relationships with monster girls. And honestly, besides the porn stuff it was kinda cute. They would show the guy and girl being in a strange but healthy, loving relationship. When I read the description of this episode I kind of hoped it would be more of that.

Nope.
KnitOneKillTwo, May 11, 2015, 12:19:24 pm

I guarantee you that some Japanese sadsack read that comic, threw his head back, yelled "NOT ENOUGH TITS" in Japanese, and got busy making a be-tittied version for other sadsacks to yank it to. Because that's how the world gets shit like this.
Isfahan, May 11, 2015, 06:33:01 pm

Yeah, the comic was more "guy has to wear diving helmet to visit his mermaid girlfriend!" not "ETERNAL HANDJOB TORTURE"
KnitOneKillTwo, May 12, 2015, 07:14:49 am

Sounds like the Living with Monster Girls comics which later got made into a manga Daily Life with a Monster Girl where instead of multiple guys who all look alike, it's one guy.  And that manga is being turned into an anime, because shit's popular apparently?

Did the one really come from the other?  Having read both, the manga thing has absolutely none of the charm of the little internet comics.  It's just generally gross from every angle.  I think the only similarities are "average Japanese schmoe" and "sexy monster girls."

Having read both as well, I'd have to agree. The former may have weird sex stuff but there's a much bigger focus on the relationship being happy and consensual than there is in the latter. The latter just feels super gross and creepy and has the added creepiness of involving a plotline that all the monster girls want to fuck him but he will literally get thrown in jail if he does because Reasons. (also it explicitly makes one of the monster girls underage so there's also a lolicon thing going on.)

It's basically your typical shitty harem story only with monsters.

A Centaur's Life is kind of cute if you like monster people slice of life.  The first volume has some creepy shit, but after that it's mainly goofy high school kids with monster bits.

You know, I got curious, so I started doing some google searches.  The earliest post of the boyfriend-living-with-monster-girls comics I can find is 2009.  (There's a manga series by him as well that started in 2012 and is getting made into an anime.)

Monster Girl Quest was released in 2011, so the Living With Monster Girl thing does actually predate Monster Girl Quest.  I have a feeling though, just from stuff I've seen, that monster girls are a "thing" that predates both of them, and people have just approached it with greater or lesser levels of Penis Frenzy.

Yeah, it's a general Thing; catgirls and the like are kind of a precursor.  Not sure whether there was a burst in popularity or whether it's just always been its own thing and the internet made it easier to find.

...now I am wondering if there's some kind of Western equivalent where people are crankin it to the old Universal Monsters.  That would be pretty funny.

The author is the same, the main guy looks like all the other main guys, and same with the monsters.  It's Okayado on Pixiv, and his page shows both those original comics and a few pages from the new thing.

Do you just mean like the vampires and werewolfs?  Because I think that's covered under Anne Rice and Twilight.

Jesus Christ.  That's like starting out with a good grilled burger and then serving a McDonald's quarter pounder that you dropped on the floor a few times.  I mean, the original comics weren't high art, but the manga is just really, really stupid.

I was thinking more the actual stable of those particular monsters.  The idea of someone making a dating game with the cast of Monster Mash amuses me no end.

I guess trap sprung, because it's actually Centaur's Worries if we're talking about the same thing. And yes, there is some goddamn creepy shit in the first part.

I do wish it had more bullshit pseudo-scientific explanations about why all these monster people exist. I kind of like that even more than the daily lives of monster people.

I am saddened that I know this much about this thing, but actually all the cast is of age. The "joke"/lolicon creepobait is that the Harpy character has the emotional maturity of a 12-year-old but is TOTALLY LEGAL TO FUCK, brohaim.

If you're curious as to why an incredibly weird but sweet comic became basically Porky's with monster tits, the simplest answer is probably when someone came into edit the manga, they said something to the effect of "Romance? No, no, no, fella. Have them all fight over his dick. We aren't running a charity here, we're making spank material for gross  nerds."

The official English title is A Centaur's Life; I can't be bothered to keep track of stuff outside of what my local Barnes & Noble has to offer.  (Leaving aside its hanky panky store status. :V )
