Title: damn.dog (the WikiHow Picture Guessing Game)
Post by: Lemon on February 04, 2016, 10:05:20 pm
Built this (http://damn.dog) in a couple hours, just because I bought a domain and had nothing to do with it.

At the moment, my plan is to turn the questions into multiple choice, which means I need a way bigger database of pictures. Help would be appreciated.

Need: URL for pic & URL for WikiHow article. WikiHow recently started doing a thing where the titles are in the picture, so please make sure it isn't one of those.

Wheeeee!

I run a tumblr (http://wikihow-illustrations.tumblr.com) with a little bit of a backlog of illustrations on there. If you haven't scraped it yet, let me know and I'll include a few that haven't been posted yet plus all the dross sitting in my inbox.

e: there's also several Wikihow images facebook groups. I can crawl em if it helps.

Yay!

Just went through the first 4 pages and pulled some out.

Also, the game was made multiple choice in the latest push. Works pretty well so far.

Made a bunch of updates (http://damn.dog/).

Added quite a few pictures from chai tea latte's tumblr, and the game will now keep track of your score.

Is it all right to tweet this out or do you still want to do more work on it before non-ballpitty people start visiting?

Seconding the comment on the main site: this setup would be great for the style of game where everyone submits their own caption and people have to guess which one is the actual one.

I don't know any code, goodbye!

Eye of Za: so that was basically my initial idea. Show a picture, ask you to caption it, and then you upvote the funny ones. But, that kind of workflow requires a database communication that I'm really not equipped to make. Everything that made Wrongest Words work was because Dole knew how to handle it. I need communication to be one-way, site to user, and to that end, I'm pretty happy with how it ended up.

Yavuz: email is probably best.

May be out of scope, but it's a little flaky on Chrome on iOS; it persists the answers from the previous image.  I don't really do mobile stuff but if I get a chance I can take a look at it.  I like it though!  Super fun.

Lemon, February 04, 2016, 10:05:20 pm

I'd found some images I love but that have the bug on them, so I'm storing (some) of the images locally on the site now. This is actually better, since it means I can control file size and URLs. Also it means that I can photoshop out the titles if I need to. (and then add a new watermark just to respect copyright) So keep sending images & titles, please.

Update:

I added a hashing syntax to the javascript. So, for example, if you visit http://damn.dog/#120 - you're guaranteed to get a drawing of a woman belching. The url hash changes every time you hit "new round", so you can share specific rounds if you like.

Just committed this, so let me know if you run into problems with it.

Yup. Rock Paper Shotgun, Destructoid, Digg, Kotaku UK, Daily Dot, and something New Zealand men's clip called M2.

All of which, combined, make for less referral traffic than Tumblr.

Confirmed to be the case on a Samsung Galaxy S5, regardless of which web browser I use on it.

Also, I kinda feel bad about the .08% who do click the link, only to find Lemon's "lift and carry" site bio, devoid of context.

34% of visitors are marked as "mobile", which means they wouldn't be seeing the bottom bar. (3% tablet and 62% desktop)

The bottom bar is actually based on your screen real estate. If your window is less than 620 pixels, the bar goes away (you can resize your browser for the same effect). I basically just did that because I wanted as much space as possible for the relevant stuff without adding a hamburger menu. Though thinking of it now, maybe a hamburger menu isn't a bad idea here.

Have you considered adding a sort of user submission thing like a caption contest?

Like, when that one image of a building surrounded by an evil purple cloud from the last WikiHow ep of the podcast comes up, I can send in my own guess as to what the article is, which would be "What to do when the McDonald's Grimace farts in your workplace"). And then this and other peoples' much funnier answers would get put in a gallery somewhere.

Post by: Ashto on April 14, 2016, 01:56:16 pm
I'm pretty sure the idea is that the titles listed are all real titles. Your job is to find out which one is the correct one, and the humor lies in the fact that they are all pretty fitting. If people were to submit their own titles, it would be a funny game akin to Jack's Party Box, but it wouldn't be true to the original idea.

However, there is a link to github on the site, so I'd suppose you're more than welcome to make a fork of it to tool around with.
Title: damn.dog (the WikiHow Picture Guessing Game)
Post by: Sherman Tank on April 14, 2016, 02:15:11 pm
Well the very earliest version of damn.dog required you to type in your own guess as to what article the picture was from, and then it showed you the real answer. I was just wondering if something like that could be made.

Ah, sorry, I wasn't aware. I retract my prior comment then. I guess we'll wait and see what Lemon has to say about it. Either way, the idea of making a fork is still available if you're into that sort of thing (cause with the hamburger menu, the option to switch game mode could go there).

So, pretty much what Ashto said.

At the moment, I'm happy with the premise. It's easy to understand, and I think it's fun to play.

Originally, I had built the thing with more of a Jackbox style, but gave up on that idea because I'd have to be writing server side code and that is emphatically not my jam.

I do believe you could put together a "best caption" game using something like Firebase (https://www.firebase.com/) (as was my initial intent) but that isn't where my heart is currently. However, you can fork what I have and try out some of your own ideas.

This all makes perfect sense, thanks. I only suggested it because I think it might be a cool thing to do, but somehow I doubt anybody else will do it if you don't because it's kind of a niche idea.

Oh, this is new actually.

The previous spike was from him making an offhand comment that YouTube streamers should make videos of themselves playing damn.dog (near the end of a video which was genuinely called "HOT BABES! (Not Clickbait)".

This time the whole video is a damn.dog playthrough. Though I don't believe he ever says the actual name of the site at any point? At least in as much as I could watch.
