Hey, fun fact, you don't want your body to constantly be in ketosis unless you absolutely have to because if there's an additional stressor affecting your blood pH regulation you might go into ketoacidosis and possibly die. It’s as if eating only meat is an extremely bad idea
Bleeding from your gums is a telltale symptom of scurvy, and meat doesn't have a lot of vitamin c in it (fish has even less). Most mammals make their own vitamin c, except for primates (and apparently capybaras and guinea pigs)
also hey, fun fact, liver has a shitload of vitamin A in it, as a matter of fact it has way too much for you and can cause hypervitaminosis A, and that's without talking about all the heavy metals and stuff in liver

Would it bring you too much grief if I pinned this to the top of r/vegancirclejerk ?

EDIT: What the fuck is up with Redditors being so obsessed with their testosterone levels?

Or in the case of people who eat only meat because they think it will make them more manly, literally toxic masculinityEDIT: What the fuck is up with Redditors being so obsessed with their testosterone levels?

I love my stepmom dearly. She's one of the most kind, genuine, creative people I know. She is also currently doing keto because she has a tendency to eat compulsively and wants a quick fix and I am about thisclose to pointedly playing this episode in her presence until she takes the hint since she hasn't from any of the actual facts ElizabethSterling and I have attempted to bring up about how awful keto is for your health as a whole.

If you are interested in a meat-heavy diet, one which is almost carnivore but includes some plant foods, which don't cause you issues, this is not the appropriate place to have those conversations. There are two potential subreddits that were created to host those discussions. We have r/carnivorish and r/dirtycarnivores. Those subreddits are currently small, but you can help them grow. A responsible person who helps those subreddits become thriving communities will be considered for a moderator position there. Both of those subreddits have one post saying "hey, this sub is open now!," and that's it. Amazing.
What I love about the honey ban is that it'd be easy and fairly sensible to say "honey has way too many carbs to work in this zero-carb diet, so please don't eat it or discuss eating it here," but instead you get this dumb tribalism about whether it's really an animal-based food. I'm guessing this is because there have been some really stupid honey-related slapfights and they're trying to cut that off at the pass? Reading that rules post suggests this place has a loooot of stupid slapfight topics they're trying to cut down on.

I know two things about engineers: they fukken LOVE to rules lawyer, and a whole lot of them post on reddit.
OK I know a lot more about engineers because my hometown is crawling with them. But those two are germane to the conversation.
Oh, they also believe that they have an expert-level understanding of everything because of their Superior Logical Mind. That also relates.

It's hard to make it through a college course when you keep shitting yourself during the lectures. What I love about the honey ban is that it'd be easy and fairly sensible to say "honey has way too many carbs to work in this zero-carb diet, so please don't eat it or discuss eating it here," but instead you get this dumb tribalism about whether it's really an animal-based food. I don't think the redditors on r/ZeroCarb are the sort to persevere through an undergrad Engineering program.

there is some big dog food energy from some of the meals described in this episodeI can't get over the guys who are literally just eating beef tallow. A lot of the terrible meals described are things I can kiiiind of understand, like the dudes trying to come up with "healthier" steak preparations, and even the raw beef dudes I can understand from the perspective of "someone told this idiot that you need to eat your meat raw to preserve the vitamins," but... beef tallow? Just eating straight-up fat, without even the pretense of actual food being involved? How the hell did this even happen?

Didn't help that the thread was headed by a mod who'd probate people voicing any point to the contrary.I can't get over the guys who are literally just eating beef tallow. A long while back, in Something Awful's diet subforum, there was a thread about eating bacon and lard and how extremely healthy it was. Like, literally just getting buckets of lard and eating it. This became dismayingly popular, and involved a mod who would probate/ban people for pointing out, "Uh, that is not how nutrition works at all."
It kept going until one of the people on the diet had to be put on statins.
So, the answer is, weird nerds both give and take terrible advice and don't research things. Especially when there's a dedicated space that allows them to enable each other and silence dissent.
And by "weird nerds," I mean humans in general, really.

The Bulletproof episode was also really big on the min-maxing too. This is very true, and it seems like a lot of the time it's "optimized" around a totally opaque metric. I'm still thinking about the claims from the Bulletproof episode about lowering your "biological age," with vague or no reference to what that actually means (cellular function level? Cellular lifespan? Telomere length? What?). It reminds me of the people you see in gaming circles who are focusing on incredibly weird, confusing metrics of achievement, because that way they can be the best in the world at playing with the fewest button-presses or whatever, instead of anything meaningful.
It's like these people are trying to speedrun life. They're investing time and energy into these micro-optimizations that supposedly make them slightly more alert or slightly less tired, so much so that it seems like the optimization is itself the goal. Maybe not a conscious goal, but these people really seem dedicated to living an optimized life as opposed to living a better life through butter coffee/beef gogurt.
