Have you noticed that when you say a latin word or phrase, exempli gratia "exempli gratia", you have to put it in italics? That's because language imitates reality in form as well as in content. Just as the stupid italians have come to overlay the roman legacy geographically, so have we agreed to constantly remind ourselves of that fact by replicating it in terms of the written word.
