Title: Phobias
Post by: Emperor Jack Chick on May 10, 2016, 11:50:26 am

Do you have any?

I'm an arachnophobe, but its been getting less intense as I approach my grave. When I was very little I got attacked by a dog that was a lot larger than me, so big dogs always make me recoil at first (esp really boisterous ones)

Heights. This was pretty much cemented during a trip to Cedar Point with friends, in which I burst out into tears from terror on a baby roller coaster ride and swore I would never step foot on one of them ever again.

Oh noooo, that sucks!  This must have been so miserable for you.  I'm terribly sorry.  Cedar Point is a very bad place to go if you're afraid of heights, especially with the 400+' Dragster at the center of the park, which is an incredible 45-second ride.  I hope someday it will roll backwards while I am riding it so I can ride the launch hill twice!  Not worth more than an hour wait, but lots of fun and worth a try on a light day.

I am afraid of suffocation, drowning, and choking.  I'm not sure if they're phobias.  I don't really know.  The choking thing might be linked to some trauma thing that happened several years ago.  I had to go to therapy for it recently because I was unable to swallow food as a result (it had not been addressed previously).  The therapy seemed to work, but sometimes I get freaked out and it will flare up again as a one-time event.

Do things that trigger you as a result of trauma count? Because I get instantly panicked by the sound of an office phone, and I used to be incapable of actually answering phone calls in general (out of the logistical reason of not being to calm myself down quickly enough to not miss the call).

I'm afraid of losing control of my body and being trapped in it, but I'd assume anybody who thinks about it would.

Same here. I had mild exertion asthma as a kid that improved as I became more active, and by the time I was in college I could run and all that with no issues. Occasionally when I get too drunk I'll get anxious and struggle to breathe, but that hasn't happened in a while. I still regularly have nightmares about slowly suffocating while my friends and loved ones look on in horror.

Needles.
I haven't had a blood test in over 10 years I think, haven't had a single vaccination since the mandatory ones in the military (where I also managed to weasel out of one), and when I go to the dentist the worst part for me is the injection at the beginning, after which I don't care what else they do to me.
It's serious enough that I've tried to treat it - to no avail.

I had a needle phobia that was so bad I actually got professional help for it. After lots of therapy I've gone down from "Screaming at my top of lungs to the point where I wake up other people in the hospital" to "crying and cursing softly". Which is a big, big improvement in my book.

I'm not sure it counts as a phobia since it's more like intense disgust and loathing and fear, but I really don't like the bugs that start with C. It's ridiculous I know, but I prefer not to even write or say the name cause it makes me feel ill. I also don't like closed spaces, but it's not really bad enough for a phobia. Just bad enough to make me hate flying.

Spiders. Fuuuuuuck spiders. I think it's the legs.

I will happily sleep on the sofa rather than go up to my room if there's a spider on the stairs. I live in England where we don't even have the nasty ones, outside of zoos and people who keep them as pets (what the fucking fuck). A kid in school did a presentation about his pet spider and I had to go outside. People say they're our friends because they kill flies and shit, but I'd rather have the bugs.

By the way, I am now getting all sorts of messed up thoughts creepin' in about choking and falling and other stuff that I never once gave any sort of damn about, before.

Dying.  I know it's the dumbest phobia because who isn't afraid of dying, but sometimes the thought sneaks up on me out of the blue and gives me panic symptoms.  It makes doing anything that has the potential to kill me very stressful sometimes.

Also, stinging insects.  Fuck them and their ass-needles.  I've been known to run away from bees.  Yes, I know bees are important, but that won't make me like them.  I just have someone shoo them out instead of squash them outright like I have them do with all the other ones.

Any insects I can't kill with my foot. Seriously, there is a noticeable change in my mentality towards spiders, cockroaches and such when I'm wearing shoes compared to when I'm not.

Particularly moths. I know they're not dangerous, but they're quick, light and jittery and then I picture one flying near me and AAAAAAAAAAGH. I think that comes from back in Adelaide, where the first big rainy night of the year would bring just a swarm of fist-sized moths, who would apparently die en-masse on the pavement and just leave you to be fucking terrified of the massive piles of dead bugs. Especially since some of them weren't dead.

A: Nobody prepares you for the fist-sized moths. You know how to feel about the spiders, the plants, the lizards, the sealife, the people, and probably some of the sand, those are common knowledge. Nobody says shit about your neighborhood turning into a mass giant moth grave overnight.

B: I'm from suburban Australia, the most dangerous wildlife you'll see even irregularly there are drunk football fans.

C: I'm also scared of the spiders, plants, lizards, sealife, people, and sand. The moths get special notice because I acknowledge they're not dangerous, nobody mentions them, and I still freak the fuck out at seeing one.

Ok, baby.  I feel you.

It's just when I was over there I can recall seeing lots of things in the outback, desert, beach and ocean that probably could've killed me.  I mean, I don't recall actually caring about it, either.

Pretty sure it wasn't the beer in my system.  Maybe there's just something in vegemite that makes people unnaturally calm about deadly-ass venomous creatures.

Steel. Toe. Boots. I'm not a boot guy, but I had to buy them for my job. Whenever I wear them, I become a confident bug-crusher par excellence. Nothing is too big when you have and inch and a half of rubber and metal between you and the creepy crawlies.

Oh boy...I think I'm a cavalcade of unfounded fears!

Firstly I am super afraid of heights and falling. I can't really climb ladders above the third rung without freaking out and wanting down. I'm also afraid of suffocation and enclosed places (including being surrounded by people). I think it has to do with a bullying event when I was real little. My anxiety meds have helped a little with the fear of crowds thing though, which is nice.  I also am for some reason afraid of be attacked from behind when I'm walking?? Like I get this feeling like if I can't see someone near me I'm in danger??

That's not getting into my more existential fears.

God. I'm a mess. =/

This is not really a phobia, but I have this weird thing where I'll look at stuff like grates and sewers and think "It would be really bad if I dropped my keys/phone/wallet down there cause then I couldn't get it back, better hold on to everything extra tight".

I will think this even when I'm not carrying my keys/phone/wallet.

Oh hey, it's the fear I forgot about for years until I moved to the sixth floor of an apartment building.

The gap between the door and the elevator is TOTALLY large enough to drop my phone in, and that is absolutely a valid fear to have.

I have the opposite thought when I run into these things, or in cars or whatever. I think "I could throw my phone out of the car/jump off this bridge, I know  I won't but I definitely could". I don't ever think I would do anything like that but there's a strong desire to just because it is something I could do that isn't really a normal thing to do but it would be so easy to do it.

Anybody heard of trypophobia? I am super grossed out by holes in certain patterns, like dried out lotus pods.  The scene in Inglprious Basterds where they shot up the walls of the bar almost caused me to leave the theater. It ties into a flesh eating bacteria fear I used to have, I think. I also was TERRIFIED of becoming a zombie as a child. Slight germaphobe. Many anxieties all over everywhere.

I can't deal with needles well, specifically needles (or anything needle-esque) going into a person. I'm better about it than I used to be, but I still have to close my eyes or look away if a character in a show or movie gets a shot. I haven't actually needed to get a shot myself for a long time now, it's super hard for me to do it, I pretty much have to close my eyes, tense my muscles, and sit there in fear not knowing when they're going to do it, because if I know I'll try to avoid it. The second to last time I was supposed to get a shot, they made me wait a really long time and I couldn't force myself to wait in the chair anymore and just straight up left.

I think it's the zombie games I play but every time I walk by a car parked in the street, and I mean every time, I brace myself to either see a corpse lying in the back through the windows or have the corpse suddenly fling itself against the window, throw blood everywhere, and scream at me

lunchboxoven, June 25, 2016, 11:41:26 pm

Fun fact about trypophobia: it's actually a perfectly normal reaction! Trypophobia occurs when your brain has no frame of reference as to how an object feels, and you can't touch the thing to give it a frame of reference. It manifests as a sort of visceral reaction that can easily pass for fear. If you see glass, and can't touch it, your brain can simulate the feeling of the smooth, cold sensation on your fingers; if you see a very fluffy animal, you can imagine petting it, and how soft it would be. If you see a picture of lotus pods, or a wall riddled with bullet holes, your brain just can't figure it out, triggering that fear-like response.

When I experience it, I feel like I'm going to gag, or even throw up, and I have to look away. What helps me stop the feeling is getting my hands on something familiar that has a very distinct texture, like the fabric of my jeans, or the screen of my phone, and rubbing it.

I got home and found a moth on my closest door.  It took  10 minutes of sweating and pacing to muster up the courage to look at it. When I finally did I obviously starting sobbing.

This made me take my glasses off and yay blurry moths are less scary and I was able to toss it outside!

Yay me, yay!

Then I told my boyfriend and he immediately sent me a picture of a moth because he does not understand what this is like.

I have a deathly fear of things near my eyes. During a play I was in at college, I wasn't allowed to wear glasses, so I needed contacts. I had been meaning to get them for a while, so I figured this would give me the reason to get them. The whole ordeal was terrifying. Bringing my finger so close to my eye with this thin bit of silicone, I'm shivering just typing this. I'd try for thirty minutes each night, only to give up and go to bed. As the opening night of the play came closer, I had my mom and her sister come into the bathroom with me to give me a few of their Xanax and to call me a bitch until I did it. I couldn't do it in the end and just want on stage without my glasses, and hoped i wouldn't trip. To this day I can't take eye drops and if something gets in my eye while I'm driving, I have to pull over and get it out before I can continue.

You know what?  I don't have trypophobia, but I have this same texture fear related to loss of circulation.  If I see someone wrap a piece of string tightly around their finger, I immediately want to vomit.  I've tried doing the same technique to alleviate it--touching my phone or my skirt, something familiar and smooth, and it actually works really well!
Bleh, though!  I've realized I have an extreme fear of oxygen deprivation, loss of circulation, choking, and drowning, and it sucks.  Not sure why or how, but it's there.

Huh, alot of people here are terrified of needles. I always thought the sensation of them just felt strange rather then horrifying.

That said, I used to be terrified of squid/octopus and jellyfish. I got nightmares of them whenever I was a kid. My phobia of squid and octopus went away when I started eating them but my irrational fear/hatred of jellyfish remains. What's the point of jellyfish? They don't even taste of anything.

Eider Duck, August 09, 2016, 09:20:38 pm

Would hearing a biology student ramble about them help you any? :B (Spoilering so you don't have to read if you don't want to.)

Jellies basically exist to be some of the sea's garbage collectors. They're an extremely ancient and diverse group of animals, but by and large, they're small-time predators and scavengers by the time they reach the medusa stage -- that's the point in their life cycle when they look identifiably like "jellyfish" to the average person. They start life as polyps that don't look very jelly-like at all.

Most jellies just drift through the ocean, eating plankton, shrimp, small fish, small eggs, other jellyfish... Basically whatever their tentacles can grab and keep a hold of. (The neurotoxins in their stingers help with that.) In return, they're eaten by a number of sea creatures; other jellies, sharks, bigger fish, and sea turtles, to name a few. They also help clean up algal blooms, since they can survive waters with lower amounts of oxygen than fish can; of course, then you have to deal with a jelly bloom.

So yeah, they're wiggly woogly prehistoric scavengers with super-weird biology that sup upon and in turn are are supped upon by many marine critters. Yay!

On topic, in addition to many other things, I have a really weird aversion to slime.  If it's more viscous than water and less viscous than mashed potatoes, I just can't -- my brain goes aaaaaaaaugh. ^^; I guess because I keep thinking it's some kind of biofilm formed by bacteria or it's hiding something unpleasant and -- agleblargleblrgleplt. Nope. |D;

Honey is an exception because it's transparent and delicious, and has some antimicrobial properties so I know its viscosity isn't caused by partying microorganisms. Gels are kind of on the borderline -- I'd rather not touch them directly if I have the choice but ehhhhhn I can do it.

This gets worse if the slime is opaque, since I never know what it could be hiding. Unfortunately this extends to lots of thick soups. Fish chowder is the only exception because it's so darn delicious. :B
