Yay Lou!

Oh man, some of these posters are insufferable. "Everyone always talks about music and alcohol, which I think is fucking primitive and for commoners, and I love to randomly laugh and make assumptions about people I don't know! I shockingly don't have friends!"

(And I also thought that guy had met that cougar in the wild)

Man, laughing at pretentious nerds is exactly what I needed. Nothing gross or enraging, just a bunch of stupid weirdos who think a personality test is a deep insight into their true nature.

Also yea, that intro was fantastic.

This episode really hit the spot in terms of letting the readers be hilariously exasperated without making me exasperated as well (as would happen with truly gross people--misogynists, smoking fetishists, monkey moms, etc.).

Also, for the sake of the subjects of this episode, I really hope that (a) they're all teenagers, and (b) they all learn to embrace being human sometime soon.

I understand Lemon's problem. If he doesn't mention that he hates when Catch-22 gets misused, people will keep misusing it. But he can't mention that he hates when it gets misused, or people will deliberately misuse it.

It's a classic Eddie Van Halen In Your Band conundrum, really.

I just started the episode (amazing intro, Lemon) and I have a feeling this episode is going to be my own personal Waterloo. I have known people who were super into the Myers Briggs Tests and people who were INTJs. And neither of those types of people are pleasant to be around. I also get angry when people think introversion means shy and socially awkward so better freak out when I have to talk to the McDonalds cashier and use this interaction to justify being a shut in dork. INTJs are that plus a smug superiority that can only come from what amounts to an online horoscope quiz.

Great episode, great intro, great insufferable dorks who worship Scott Adams!

I know that, for a number of reasons, the Myers-Briggs test is a glorified horoscope, but it's difficult for me to get that in my gut. I was the kid who always got exactly what I wanted on career tests, and scoring INFP every time, I took this as a way to validate myself, to hope (as these doofuses do) that I'm only different because I'm exceptional. So I understand the allure of it.

I will say that scanning /r/infp does help, since I get to gag at countless posts about how great it is to be a hopeless romantic who hates themselves for Caring Too Much About Others and being more emotionally evolved.

Insufferable assholes are always a treat.

I did the exact same thing with r/enfp! I read about the test and did it and as an awkward self-obsessed teenager I liked knowing that other people described them selves the same way I did. I do think it's a good tool for kids who feel out of place. I wasn't on reddit at the time, but I did find a forum of people who presented themselves how I did and thus, had the same kind of problems socializing as me.

This may be off topic, but both me and my sister immigranted to Canada at a young age and with parents that didn't care about us being properly socialized. So both of us (we talked about this as adults) spent our youth studying pop culture as if we were aliens trying to learn how to act amongst the humans.

So yeah, this stuff was helpful for me. But it's just a tool.

Also, I unfortunately have been on reddit for like 7 years and the community has changed. I'm always terrified that the fplus is going to find some horrible thing I wrote at 16. XD

I wonder if there's any specific studies dealing with which sizes of numbers can trip people's bullshit detectors.  This isn't about r/typeapersonality, after all.  Dividing everyone's personalities into three types seems to be too simplistic for people to take it as science, but sixteen is enough for people to go "oh yeah that's definitely science."

You know, when I clock in for work, if I'm early then management assumes I'm trying to nickel and dime them. If I'm late they assume I'm lazy. And if I'm right on time, they assume I got in early and wasted time waiting around to clock in.  This happens every day I go to work; it's a real deja vu.

You know who doesn't get enough love in basketball history? Clyde Drexler. Alright yea I admit his shooting was kinda middle of the road, but the game's about so much more than that. The guy was a real worker, he could do a lot, but he especially was good at the assists and steals. You know, supporting stuff, not glamorous but really important if you want to win. He made up for his problems with being fast and slick, who cares if you aren't hitting threes when you can get the ball and blow past the other guys, right?

I mean he was a key part of all the teams he played in, I think all of them even retired his number and everything. I know the sure did here in Houston at least.

I mean, we all agree down here, he wasn't the best shooter the team ever had, but when push came to shove you just couldn't catch 22.

The intro was good, but am I missing some context? It seems like something that could have been said before any episode ("hey, we may be jerks, but we aren't trolls or trying to suppress anyone"). Was there an actual incident or public accusation that I missed?

AFAIK, that comment is partially because of the presidential election, and partially because there's a specific, small, awful part of our fanbase that was whipped into extra action by the election results. I can't really go into more detail because I don't actually have any of the facts, but it's nobody that posts here.

There is a mountain cat in a box. Without opening the box it is impossible to determine whether the cat is an INTJ or an ENFP. Until the box is opened the mountain cat is simultaneously every, all and none of the Myers-Briggs personality types. In addition, the mountain cat may be an ABDL who's DTF. This, my friends, is what we call the true Catch 22.

I just did a test and came up as INFP, so I looked at /r/infp (https://www.reddit.com/r/infp/) and everyone just seems to be depressed and lonely. That's about right, really.

edit: wait, i scrolled a bit further and they're insufferable too.

Really, I'd expect any community based on a personality test result to become insufferable.  At least with fandoms, you have whatever dumb thing you all like to talk about; with personality tests, all you have is your stupid self, and you're all supposedly alike, so it just turns into a contest of who can become the biggest caricature.

This has me wondering if there's a subreddit for people of the various astrological signs and how annoying/entertaining that might be.

INTJs want a personality test to prove that they're geniuses, to get out of having to learn to be better people. But the fact that they believe in personality tests proves that they're not geniuses.

I forget the word for that kind of thing.

Clever Spooks, I almost bulbed that. I know that you were trying to trick us into giving you tons of bulbs. Well, I for one am not going to fall for your Catch-22.

The intro was poignant and I know it was speaking for the most part in generalities, but fuck those people that are one their phones finishing a transaction in a store.  (I'm extra salty about not getting free bags at the super market anymore and I don't know who to blame.)

I thought that the barrier level of entry to genius was winning a few rounds of Jeopardy or something equivocal in a field outside of trivia, not taking a SPARKtest and discussing your results with your AIM buddies.

Yes and maybe. A few of them are private (gemini and pisces), a few don't exist, and a few are not the same thing (leo = cops, cancer = the illness, taurus = guns, libra = minecraft).

I had the same feeling, I've done enough of Myers-Briggs to suspect it's astrology for HR departments. And I'd like to thank the fplus for the great music choices, the podcasts are a new source for me.

Yeah I did a brief trawl to check, but they were either nonexistent, dead, or just really boring. :(

I just re-listened to this one, and one of the funniest things about these people to me is their tendency to totally misuse words they think will make them sound smart. Like, the guy complaining about porn described it as "visual pleasantries," and I know what he's trying to say, but unless the porn stars are just politely chatting the whole time that's not accurate. I guess weirder things have been porn on this podcast, though, so who knows!

I think risking swing-and-a-miss mistakes on words that make you sound smart should be highly considerated.

Relistening to this one and I think the mountain lion segment is the most profoundly white thing I've ever heard on the internet. There's nothing that says sheltered white american like "I looked at a mountain lion in the zoo and I read its mind and it has the same personality type as me also I absorbed its animal instinct so now I can read people and using that animal instinct to read people I've found out everyone's naive and innocent except me"

It's not so much white as it is profoundly sheltered, stupid, and clueless.

It is that but it's tempered with self importance as well to provide an extra layer of "please never speak again"

Oh hey I guess the Myers-Briggs was inspired by eugenics, because of course it was.

I mean honestly it's pretty safe to assume that ANY test created in the 20s is at least partially inspired by eugenics. It was the big popular thing to do at the time.

Except, ironically, for IQ tests, which were originally intended as tools to help identify children with learning difficulties so they could be given extra attention...And were immediately subsumed by eugenicists against the intentions of the test's creator.
