I also can't listen to "F Plus Sings" anymore, but mostly because I had to listen to the raw files ad nauseum. Maybe in a few more years.

I'm stoked to get a mention, by the way, and to have one of my mixes on there (even though I consider it one of my weakest ones)

Some of the other mixes make for better songs, but that one stands out for being conceptually terrific.

Yeah when I met jack chick in person I knew what a fucking scrub I was being but I still said "I'm sorry but I have to inform you right now that you are jack fucking chick."

And he was like "yeah, ha ha, how could you tell."

I could tell because we were speaking to each other with voices. So, in other words, if someone who listens to the podcast hears your voices in the wild, they will probably know. They'll just have to decide whether or not they want to say 'I know you're trying to have a normal conversation but in my head I hear you screaming about monster girls and I have just been stuck in this loop of horror for as long as I've been standing in front of you.'

Don't worry Nutshell, your voices are awesome. You screaming "DIE! DIE! KILL! KILL! SEE YOU IN HELL!" is one of my favorite moments.

Fair enough!

Almost coincidentally, this episode was released a day after Paula Deen's 69th birthday.

About the idea to make ballp.it: I've got a sneaking suspicion that you were trying to re-create the birth of Something Awful Forums. You've got a thing where people make fun of stuff on the internet, and then there's a message board for it that costs tenbux. I'm not even complaining, as long as you don't also duplicate the "being a super up-tight nerd" thing or the "helldump exists" thing.

Now, excuse me, I'm off to create Let's Play 2.0 and fuck up the forums with an influx of millions of children.

I think I found the podcast off of SA (either directly or through some kind of chain through the 'This Troper' series, I can't remember) and I think the contrasts between here and there are quite interesting. I still post there in a few threads under a different name. If nothing else, The F Plus and ballp.it have had much better community management and decisions than SA has ever had. This may have been helped by the fact that they've not been around as long as SA nor are they anywhere near as large, but I think it's also the chillness and good humour of the podcast itself. It's kind of amazing how many fuck-ups have happened at SA in pretty much every conceivable area and the development of its nuts-o forum politics over the years but I can't even think of any major screw-ups here. The MNGT have every right to be proud of that.

Ahaha yep. I almost said "although I don't know WHY you'd do that," but to be honest SA forums does produce oodles of fantastic original content, even if half the other posts are in petty, bitter, misanthropic shitnerd style.

I'm in a good mood today, so this episode didn't fix my life, but it was still funny.!

I imagine the containment gazebo for the ball of twine as a form of truce in the ongoing "My Giant Ball of Twine is an Important Piece of Art" vs. "I Don't Want That Thing in the House" war. And whenever Lemon forces suggests that ridiculists go to see it, he basically kicks off another Cuban Missile Crisis.

But most of all, I've enjoyed the stories of how you all got together, and how the F Plus means things to you besides just "EW GROSS LOOK AT THIIIIIIIS" every week. (I'd better get to work on that doc I want to submit.)

Also, if someone wished a site/forum dedicated to turd condoms into existence, would you make an episode about it?

You misunderstood.  It was Bumpgrrl and me that established the Twine caBal and directed the pilgrimage, in fact arriving a day early in order to have time to make the trip.  We were the ones who were so very excited that the Twine Ball Inn is a real place.  Lemon was the one who hates fun.

In the episode Lemon's really downplaying how much fun he had at the twine ball. He specifically ran up to me (as much as one could in that cramped "museum"), giggling out "there's a newspaper article on the wall about how the postman was fat 8DDDD" and insisting that I see it immediately.

McMillan and Waifu, January 20, 2016, 08:44:29 pm

I hesitate to remind everyone of the Earwolf Challenge but I'd like to remind folks that the winners of that competition were already a semi-pro podcast based out of Los Angeles who could do things like get Patton Oswalt on as a guest—which they did for one of their entries—so yeah, it was a competition on paper, but it really wasn't in practice.

Essentially it was the podcast version of this

That, and also IIRC they structured it in a way that made a lot more sense for judging a "traditional" Earwolf show (assumed recurring segments, interviews, guests, etc.) and they had revolving guest judges who either needed the F Plus concept explained to them and/or were straight up not into it. I also feel like Matt Besser was a colossal douche, but that might just be an uncharitable read of his personality.

Oh well, at least it got us Bozarth.

The podcasts felt like they were being judged more on their marketability than their quality or humor, I'd say. Not that The F Plus is the funniest thing ever (that goes to fat people falling down (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7IM2YssIEo)), but I'm certain being based out of LA gave them a huge advantage, which is why I mentioned it. From their perspective, it makes sense—the winner would be making money for Earwolf. I'm just not buying the premise.

I'm calling for a preemptive ban on Frank West for safety reasons.  He was basically the fucking Predator four years ago when I stopped playing.  He'd jump out of a window and murder half my team while I ineffectually screamed into the microphone. Then he'd shoot me in the face.  At this point he can probably stab people in real life through the monitor.

Frank West, February 04, 2016, 08:55:13 pm

I'mma piggyback onto this TF2 nostalgia by busting out a treasured classic.

The story behind this is, I had a bunch of audio clips I liked to rip out from various YouTube videos to play during TF2. I had them all converted to .wav, because that's what HLDJ accepted at the time. I can no longer play any of these, because Valve switched audio protocols for their games, and now HLDJ is broken for me. But I loved to play this particular rant from YoungConversative.

The subject for this audio clip was a kid named YoungConservative on Youtube. He had dumb neoconservative opinions on feminism and Obama and all that shit, and he was sixteen years old. He had one video where he railed against feminists, then dressed up in his mother's clothes and screamed HEY EVERYBODY I'M A FEMINIST and had some politically motivated screaming match at the camera.

It was particularly valuable, because something about the kid's rant hoodwinked people into believing I was actually this YoungConservative character, and not some asshole who knew how to play audio clips over the Source engine's voice protocol.

The video for this clip has long since been removed, but lucky for you! Because I've managed to save the audio for posterity.

Pretty sure some version of HLDJ still works. I recently re-downloaded it to mess with someone's L4D game and it did its job. Then again I didn't try it on TF2 so maybe I'm just a dumb butt.

Hey, speaking of TF2 nostalgia, I was going through my old hard drives looking for something, and I found this:

This was the height of humor back in 2009, I promise.

I'mma piggyback onto this TF2 nostalgia by busting out a treasured classic.

That is true, but I have too much fun using my own drunk voice to piss off other players. Especially in tightly-packed four-person shooters where one person enjoys what I'm doing and the other two don't and a votekick war ensues and one of the people who hates my voice kills himself on purpose in the game out of protest.

I checked your Steam profile to see what I was in for.

Healslime, February 04, 2016, 05:57:15 pm

I once thought I played too much TF2 a few years ago, and now I see that Frank West has played as just Spy for 5x longer than I've played ever. That's reassuring!

Did anyone else start listening to all of the podcast in backwards chronological order like lemon mentioned?

I did that when I first came to the podcast, around episode 93.

I started on the Roy Orbison in Clingfilm episode, and then listened to every episode in regular chronological order. That was five years ago; I was still a freshman in high school (probably). I think I heard every episode enough times to understand almost any reference that can be thrown out, and I've only recently tried supporting the podcast in any way.

I think I first heard of the F Plus through the Something Awful ThunderDome writing group- I participated pretty heavily in that for a year or so, including the IRC chat, and I feel like the podcast came up a bunch. (Incidentally, I think a doc of a bunch of the worst stories to come out of Thunderdome was dumped a while back... any particular reason? I remember there being some pretty funny bad stuff coming out of that.)

The first episode I listened to was... maybe Butt Ghosts? Which was probably not an ideal starting point because I really knew nothing about/wasn't interested in online fetish stuff. But as a longtime Nintendo fan I soon listened to the Fantendo Wiki and Sex with Pokemon episodes and was pretty much hooked after that! I did work backward from there, I think.

I started off searching by the "insanity" and "paranoia" tags because those episodes are hilarious.

Some friends introduced me to the podcast about a year ago - around when the "The Audio Quality is Inaudible" came out. I forget what I started on but I thought the podcast was boring as shit at first, but around the time I heard the John Kitchin episode it thoroughly grew on me.

It turns out that, as funny as crazy people are, terrible recipes and terrible Wikihow advice are actually much funnier.

I just now used the voices megamix as a demo reel for a voice acting gig.

I've listened to the podcast for probably over a couple hundred hours and I just NOW managed to listen to both this and 100a+b and JESUS this made me nostalgic. Hearing you guys talk about your old friend group based around weird shit made me think back to me and my old group of friends from the Cringe Channel (it was a shit website in retrospect but we had fun together), and just having a group of friends based around mutual fascination with weird shit. Maybe my eyes got wet maybe they didn't it's not your problem

Also on the discussion of Adam's best work, I honestly think the funniest piece of content from left handed radio is just this five line exchange, can't remember what episode it is.

"So, you ever work with kids in the past?"

"Uhhh, well I have a little brother."

"Oh yeah? What sort of stuff do you do together?"

"Punch each other."

"Yeah."

It kills me every time I think about it

These two and those two episodes are something else. They're so great to listen to. Hits me right in the internet historian feels.
