Title: What's your favorite type of episode?
Post by: Cat Planet on February 25, 2015, 05:38:18 pm
What's your favorite F Plus area of expertise? You can vote for three different things. You can also explain why you like them. I am personally torn between fetishes (the ball busting episode is one of my top favorites) and weirdo subcultures like bronies.

I really like the single-lunatic episodes like Connie Marshall or Jonathan Lee Richestm. That specific and prolific insanity seems to becoming more and more rare online, although I may just not be looking in the right places. I don't count any form of craziness that actually harm or make other people miserable - those two I mentioned are the sort of crazy that is also virtually harmless, and I'd like to listen to my atrocity tourism without feeling a bit queasy hearing the manifesto of someone that might show up in a news headline in the near future.

Speaking of improbable fetishes, I've just had two root cmonster cocks done today and while I was sitting there I thought "Hmmm, I wonder if there is someone who is aroused by dental pain". The thought made me feel unnerved. This is what this podcast is doing to me.

I like the terrible people and the stupid people.  Super bonus points if shitty fanfic is involved.

It's also fun seeing the permutations of the above two in the weird subcultures.

I'm not as big a fan of the fetish stuff unless it involves people being pompous about it (as in the waifu movement).  Otherwise, it's sometimes funny, but weird fetishes on their own aren't as entertaining to me as bad writing or just plain broken/nutty/idiotic people.

I would be super happy if there was another singing episode with a different room of ridiculists, but I wouldn't turn it down if any of the ones in episode 151 came back. (Besides Lemon, obviously.)

The ones that I always like that weren't specifically in the poll are the dating sites and conspiracy theorists. Dating sites because it's hilarious to see the blatant lack of self awareness on display and conspiracy theorists because I find the crazy shit they believe genuinely fascinating.

I've added the dating site option, you can change your answers if you would like to. I think that conspiracy theorists fall under the "crazy" category.

I voted for the fetishes, subcultures and dating sites, because while all those are good by themselves, they seem to triangulate to my true favorite, the roleplayers.

Maybe it's because roleplaying is 'my scene', maybe it's because we're seeing people put so much of themselves into something so fucking stupid, maybe it's because the brief focus on one specific person leads to some really weird quirks coming out, or maybe it's the 'grab bag' nature that means you never hear enough about something to get tired of it. Whatever it is, those episodes are fucking fantastic to me.

I love the episodes that are at the intersection of sex and weird subculture because when the misogynists or anti-vaxxers or gamergaters have drained me of any faith in humanity, somehow knowing that somewhere a sad lonely human pitifully jerking off in their trailer is convinced they are getting a blow job from a ghost just makes me smile.

I like it when people seem to be enjoying their crazy in a harmless way, and when the podcast doesn't feel like an attack on that. Maybe it's because sometimes I see a little of myself in the subjects, I tend to enjoy it less when there's a level of "you are bad and wrong for this." If the podcast is about something that's genuinely dangerous or harmful, like the PUAs, then I get frustrated and angry with the subjects and it's not as enjoyable because I don't think feeling like that is a good or enjoyable way to spend my time. I tend to think that whiny teenagers, fanfic writers and people who talk too much about jerking off are probably normal, reasonable people who, like us all, have the occasional weird hobby or lapse of judgement. I think it happened more in the earlier episodes, but sometimes an episode veers into making fun of the people themselves rather than the dumb shit being read, which sours the listening experience for me a little.

The f plus is at it's best when it's just taking something that's very obviously a bit nuts and not dwelling too long on why something is wrong or bad.

Basically when I hear stories about people who use entire jars of Mayonnaise to make horrible Frankenstein dishes, it makes me feel just that much better about my own diet.

So I recently bought a box of corn flakes because of a ridiculously elaborate plan that I'm not going to describe here. On the back are some gross recipes. I've been thinking about making a "jack cooks gross internet food and takes pictures of it" thread because I kind of want to make some of this garbage I'm always finding.

Also I think the next food episode vista that needs to be explored is wikihow explaining how to make gross food.

The fetish episodes are generally good, but the fetish episodes where the subjects are either playing intellectual Übermenschen on a a weird sex forum (luscious.net, the dude who brought up eugenics in the adultdvdtalk episode) or trying so hard to make their fetish into a goddamn worldview (waifus, Christian discipline) are uniquely weird and laughable for me. I can barely imagine the thought process that leads to "well my fetish is my politics and my ethics and sometimes my metaphysics, I'm in a great place and the world needs to hear my waifu-only no-fap philosophy!"

Just for kicks.

monster cockysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it. The technique has been applied in the study of mathematics and logic since before Aristotle (384–322 B.C.), though monster cockysis as a formal concept is a relatively recent development.[1]

The word comes from the Ancient Greek ἀνάλυσις (monster cockusis, "a breaking up", from ana- "up, throughout" and lysis "a loosening").Quote from

Sorry, I gotta have fun with this.

The word comes from the Ancient Greek ἀνάλυσις (monster cockusis, "a huge penis", from monster- "prodigious, of considerable size" and cockusis "male genitalia").

My least favorite episode was the Christian Domestic Discipline one, which I turned off after about a quarter and could never finish listening to. There is a subset of people in BDSM who try to exrapolate their fetish turn ons into a real relationship and I wish they wouldn't (they also like saying things like "there is no such thing as consent in our relationship" and "we want to remove the boundaries between consensual and abusive"). Also, none of the fetish episodes have made fun of what I like, which is a shame (my sister who likes guys choking her says the same). Apart from that, the teenager episodes because I end up empathizing with them too much (even though I haven't been one for a while).

I'm still waiting for a polyamory episode to be mildly offended by, as I've been in such relationships a couple of times and Lemon said he wanted to do one.

I really like stupid new-age or pseudoscience stuff because I'm fascinated with people believing stuff like that, and somehow against the odds making a living out of it, but I can't resist a good fetish episode, or a food episode.

The only thing I really don't like is when an episode is about subcultures that just hurt unwilling participants (basically just the christian bdsm and PUA shit iirc). Many more Lou Reads episodes fall under this than I'm happy with.

I don't find the episodes about teenagers that funny, but that might be my bias as someone who is still technically a teenager.

I'm not really a fan of the new agey stuff because it gets a little samey to me.  Other than the aliens business, which is magical.

I enjoy stuff like the CDD and PUA and ladyhater eps mainly because it's really satisfying hearing people make fun of it and treat it as terrible after being in a lot of places where misogyny was treated as normal and right.  Of course, I'm happy enough to just relisten to those over and over rather than getting new ones made, because I do want the podcast crew to not be totally depressed when I am not paying them gobs of money for the privilege.

For me PUA episodes are more funny than infuriating because I've talked to them in real life. You tell them a story of meeting a new woman and they keep asking "What lines did you use", "When did you escalate" and "What do you think of Mystery's opinion on this technique"

I've got to agree that while PUAs are funny, MRAs are exhausting unless you meticulously mine for the most absurd and least infuriating stuff.  MRA at its core is a topic about terrible people, while PUA at its core is about idiotic people.  They both think women are garbage, and there's some terrible idiots out there who are into both, but PUAs are in a category alongside hypnosis people and people who think they can summon chi energy.

I don't want to really derail, but who is worse - a person who does shitty things and everyone knows it, or a person who covers up their shitty deeds with a supposedly noble cause? Same reason I hate Christian fundamentalists more than Neo-Nazis - everyone knows that the Nazis are shitheads.

Oh, and they do think they are helping people, they are helping AFCs and beta schlubs get out of that friendzone, throw off the shackles of our feminizing society and full close that 9 after breaking her bitch shield and last minute resistance. It's all marketed as "dating advice for men". And I disagree with the claim that it doesn't work like hypnosis - it does, there are plenty of women with issues and low self esteem.

I'm lucky enough to be male and not have to deal with either too much, but every time I hear PUAs, I can't help but imagine how shitty it would be to have to deal with dudes negging you, comparing notes and treating you like some fucking raid boss. It's shitty to treat anyone like they're not an actual person, and whether the subject is a terrible person or a stupid one, they're still hounding people and trying to make them feel somehow lesser. It's worse if you're conscious of the idea that you're hurting people and doing it any way, but whatever the intention, the end result is the same.

Even distilled down to a doc and then an hour of terrible things read with enthusiasm, I felt like neither the PUAs nor the MRAs had enough absurdity within them to counteract the level to which the material itself just made me angry. The readers do a pretty good job either way, but if I'm getting pissed off and listening to other people getting pissed off, it makes for a less fun experience. I much prefer when the terrible describes spelling, storytelling or the reasoning abilities of someone who thinks it's a good idea to put tacos in a bag.

My favorite is definitely the Teenager episodes because so much of the stuff from those websites is stuff that I could have seen myself saying even like... two years ago. The School Survival and TV Tropes episodes in particular, because I was a giant baby AND a giant nerd. If I ever made an F Plus doc that's definitely the kind of shit I'd put in it. It's important to make fun of Teenagers. For growth. For progress. For the Teens.

Yeah, in retrospect, I think the main thing I liked about the MRA eps was the thing I like about a lot of other eps: purestrain stupidity squeezed out into just baffling ideas.  The "Education makes women masculine" chart, "women are going to start using kitty litter," "urinals are some sort of male identity thing," these are all beautiful works of art and I am happier for having heard them, much as I am happy when I hear a new funny joke.

The toilet thing is honestly the only thing which saves the episode from being almost entirely unlistenable. Every time it gets a little too frustrating, portaxx saves the day.

The episodes I seem to enjoy the most is when people who are obviously teenagers (or are in denial that they are no longer teenagers) create their own elaborate worlds of weird bullshit that outside of their blog or forum or whatever is utterly pointless and stupid, like the multiples and malatora episodes. I think part of that is because I know perfectly well that I was that kind of internet teen or absolutely would have been if I had stumbled onto that exact subject matter at the time. The new age bullshit and terrible fanfiction episodes are ones I like a lot for similar reasons.

I agree about the dating sites. I chose the "dating advice" one as the closest thing. I tend to like advice stuff in general and the weird fetish episodes almost equally.  The Love-shy and asexuals episodes were both pretty fantastic.  I think the common thread in my favorites is "oversharing and general lack of self awareness on public forums"

i love: real crazies, people who care way too hard (as distinct from 'too much') about dumb shit (fetishes, drugs, etc), awful ideas (ideawiki, wikihows, recipe/spell sites, #littleshutinthings)

These all more or less have in common the thread that a person is acting as an authoritative source, is usually terribly misinformed or a poor communicator to begin with, and, on the forums at least, having a conversation with other people in exactly the same boat. I love it when people who are objectively wrong tell me how the world works. I love it even more when they're super patently wrong but the idea that they are has never actually occurred to them.

Sometimes it's fun to check in and see how the people are doing. Everyone's favorite lecherous 50 year old wolfman, Demitri Dormasz, moved "death" from his "maybe" column to the "yes" column, which is nice to see. Rob the Helpful Parrot transformed into a human and wrote a bunch of books (http://www.amazon.com/E.M.-Robertson/e/B00FOAZ86M#), most of which don't use comic sans on the cover

Please let this be real. This is too beautiful not to be real.

This can't be real, but nice try. There is no way the real Bboy 360 has this amount of self awareness.

I wouldn't say no to a complete works of ShakespeareHemmingway episode.  Or series of extras.

I was a professional audiobook editor long enough that I pretty much hate all audiobooks that aren't Wizard People My Dear Reader, but a "Complete Works of ShakespeareHemmingway" audiobook would be A+ F+.

Teenagers and real crazies are my least favorites because they just make me sad or give me secondhand embarrassment.

Occult/religious crazy is my favorite, with stupid sexists coming in a close second (there is a reason I wrote the MRA doc-- I live for mockery of that bullshit.)

I was listening to the Dozerfleet episode today, and it occurred to me that a "Where Are They Now?" episode giving updates on some of the really dedicated loonies might be interesting. I'm sure Dozerfleet Founder and Amy Lee have written hundreds of thousands of newly crazy words since their episodes. And maybe the Sasquatches have farted some more fascinating insights to Joan Ocean. And did that breakdancing dude ever get his 100,000 cheevos?

I would loooooove to hear a revisit of Dozerfleet.  Incompetent, crazy, self-important artists are amazing, especially when they're documenting their insane lives.

I always feel like I should be more in to these episodes because in the grand scheme of things this sort of person is one of my favorite internet things, but as episodes I usually find they're a bit too samey by the end, I like the episodes with a variety of voices.

I like the focus on a single twit episodes just because there's something fascinating about seeing the absolutely insane worlds people construct to make sense of reality.  Obama is trying to recreate the Ottoman Empire, indeed.

I don't know what got left on the cutting room floor for Dozerfleet, but that website is brimming with so much nonsense content that it would easily fit another episode.  The one we got didn't cover his inane ramblings on this revolutionary new thing called "web comics" and they didn't even read any of Replox: Abstract Foundations, his 'short' story which reads like a book written by someone familiar with the components of the English language but with no concept of how they go together.

It also left out the fact that because one of the girls he was creeping on and her mom weren't touched by his obsessive newsletters and her mom insisted that he needed to stay away from her daughter because she was into gangsters and he was OBVIOUSLY the only positive thing in her life that could have "saved" her that they were horrible people and therefore that led to her fucking DYING

Episodes that have to do with aliens and crazy people are my absolute favorites. Specifically episode 50. I've listened to that episode far too many times. The conspiracy theories and just pure insane people, (gang stalking, the government is watching me, anyone in a tinfoil hat), are the absolute best episodes.

The question/answer sites consistently make for some of my favorite episodes. I guess those fall under the "stupid people" category, but the format does wonders for bringing out poorly conceived and poorly spelled content from people.

I love the "focus on a single twit" episodes a lot, no matter what the views of the twit in question.

Also WikiHow. I'm probably as in love with WikiHow as Boots is.

Yea wikihow is always great but I'm also a big fan of 'we found one lunatic's writing, here it is'. Dozerfleet is still one of my absolute favorites for just how great a picture you're able to get of him in it.

My favourites would have to be the recipe episodes. My second-favourites are the Wikihow episodes, because those are terrible recipes for things that are not edible.
