Regarding furries and disposable income, I can think off the top of my head of at least three or four that have posted along the lines of "welp I'm shipping out for basic training soon, see you guys in a while". I don't know how true this story was but I remember someone supposedly commissioned furry art to put up in his company's common room or whatever while overseas. Don't know how that went over, but still.
From what I can guess, enlisting in the army probably works for furries because it makes sense if you're nerdy, into guns, and aren't that employable in another field. And then once you're in, you get a bunch of military benefits, but since you're a nerdy single guy, you don't have to spend it on housing for your girlfriend or on your kids (because you don't have any). Instead of (or maybe alongside with) spending it on a motorcycle or whatever, you just throw all your disposable income at furries to make porn you want to see.
Isfahan probably is clearer on the details about the sorts of nerdy dudes who get into the military, though. My experience with the army is only from having grown up in an army officer's family.

From those that I knew its just a lot of bad money management especially with art. I knew a guy who would get a new commission every week or two and he probably was near a hundred last time we spoke which was a year ago. Some of it is bought as gifts. I knew a lot of people would do it as birthday gifts, or anniversary or just because the new e-yiff buddy and/or partner needed a canonical image of the new pair. Or just because (the non porn art) is cute sometimes. Companies like Bad Dragon really mastered selling to a niche though, they sell a relatively good product that appeals to a dedicated and dumb enough community to shell out cash by the boatload. I cant say I'm any better honestly because I keep buying bayonets. At least history is a good excuse.

This is pretty much what I've seen too, both from mining content and from people being annoying goobers. Skimming their galleries or blogs would quickly reveal that they'd pay for commissions on a damn near daily basis, only to sheepishly ask their friends for money weeks later because bills "snuck up" on them. Or "oops I totally accidentally overdrafted can I plz plz plz have some money?? ^_^;;" I'm sure at least a few of them have taken out loans for fursuits and shit.
Needless to say it's fucking infuriating, especially since the people who do this do it repeatedly. Hey, I can understand the occasional fuck-up; you think you have some walking around money, you buy something stupid, then an emergency bites you in the ass. It happens. But buying art nonstop? Fuck that. You're just going to have to go without weird fanart or cartoon porn for a while, you loons. Suck it up and deal with it.
Something I
really don't get though: A lot of the time, furries will just buy stuff from
each other. As in, one of them will open up commissions, their friends buy some, then those friends in turn open up commissions (because again, BILLS ARE SNEAKY BASTARDS THEY ARE) and the first furry will then buy from
them. What the fuck? It's just a bunch of kids passing a dollar around amongst themselves? How does that even work? Oh wait, of course...
it doesn't. And now I'm seeing furries sponsoring each other on Patreon, which also doesn't exactly work.
And the thing is, they always ask for the same goddamn things over and over again anyway. One person might always ask for "I want my fursona as a Pokemon trainer! ^_^" and another might ask for nothing but "my character looking badass with a gun or something X3" And of course you have the fetishists who exclusively buy art of fat sheep falling off a cliff. And even then, they tend to pick artists with very similar styles (classic Disney, generic anime, etc.) or just latch on to one artist like a lamprey. And that really confuses me because if you're going to blow all this money on fanart, why not go for wildly different artists, styles, and scenarios?
Seriously, some people can't even waste all their rent money on dumb shit properly.
(that said, I do have framed art of my cartoon characters in my room. It's goddamned adorable.)
