Hi there!
I dunno if you're aware, but there is the ability add chapters to podcasts (https://chaptersapp.com/faq/). I first noticed this in ShopTalk (https://shoptalkshow.com/), and support for the thing is getting wider. If we had enough episodes with chapters in them, I'd be interested in changing thefpl.us' own interface in order to support it.
But that means having someone do the manual entry of marking those chapters. So I thought I'd ask for volunteers to see if anyone is interested.
If you have a Mac there's two options that look really good. Forecast (https://overcast.fm/forecast) by the Overcast team, and Chapters (https://chaptersapp.com/) by this Swedish guy (https://twitter.com/bjoreman). Both look nice. If you felt like playing with one of them and sending me the results I would very much appreciate it.
If you don't have a Mac the options are much more shitty. The only thing I've found is something called Podreel (http://podreel.com/), which costs $25, looks ugly (I genuinely don't know if it supports Windows 10) and the third question in the FAQ (http://podreel.com/support) is "What is podcast?" If you can find something better, hooooray that would be great. If you want to try to suffer through Podreel let me know.
No matter what if you're interested, let me know. Thank you.

I am interested and I have a Mac. What are you looking for in terms of how chapters would be laid out?

I think download the episode of your choice and break it into whatever sections make sense for that episode. I'm guessing the actual breakdown of chapters will change episode to episode, but just mark up every natural break?

One episode's got some already!

Used that one as example for a test, worked out really well.

The real hard part is probably going to be coming up with chapter names.

Thats the easy part. If there arent sections in the source doc then you label them stuff like "Lemon says Frenulum a lot"
-
I did episode 231. How do you want me to send it to you?
EDIT: I did episode 280 as well.
-
Yay!
Okay, so thanks to ikaribattousai, we now have 3 episodes chaptered up.
- Episode 231 The Hedgehog
- (Untitled Vaping Episode)
- For A Better Slearth
I need some time to play with the design tweaks to get this working right on the website (and hopefully get some more episodes supported while I'm at it), but what I can tell you is that this is working in the podcast players that support mp3 chaptering. Here the Slearth episode in PocketCasts for Android.

So, give any of those 3 episodes a try in whatever podcast app you use and see if you can skip sections. And meantime, please do send me chapter notes for more episodes.

I don't know if I'm the only person working on this, but if there are others we might want a specific thread for coordinating which episodes we're working on so we can deconflict. Should we just do it in here or would another thread/sub-forum be better?
-
I'm giving it a stab with 187 tonight, just a heads up.
-
Listening to 231 right now on Podcast Republic and it appears to work fine.
-
Gonna chapter episode 1 and every fifteen minutes will be a chapter with the title "Please stop listening to this" and "...you're still listening?!", ending with "DID APOLLO SEND YOU?"
-
I've done episode 301 as well.
-
is 17 chapters too many? the other option is 10
also how do I turn this in
edit: also did 188, it has 14 chapters which I find acceptable

A lot of mine have 16 or 17. I email them to Lemon with the chapter titles and time stamps in text in the email body.

Sent 187 and 188. Starting 189 shortly~

I could possibly help, as I have a Mac. Any standards or practices you'd like to keep? Any formatting style we should follow?

I've been aiming for 10-15 chapters, mostly based off the doc's sections. "introduction" and "what did we learn?" are also standard in mine.
Titles are default all lowercase no punctuation, but occasionally there's CAPS FOR EMPHASIS or a punctuation mark.
116kbps is ideal (I'm using 128 because it's the closest option in forecast).
Then I send the file as an attachment to [email protected], with the email body being a list of times and chapter titles in order.
Want to edit metadata? Here's Lemon's example:

Yeah, I don't really have a style guide for chapters. I feel like if you feel like doing chaptering, just do whatever seems appropriate to you, as far as how many and naming conventions. But do please encode your MP3 back at 112kbps (or whatever is closest to it), and for episode metadata:
Title: Title (without # or the word "episode", eg: Stuffed Full of Fantasy)
Artist: The F Plus
Album: [the year the episode was released]
Year: [the year the episode was released]
Track: [episode number]
-in the case of non-standard episodes, I kind of wing it. For example, there's an "album" called "F Plus Live", and each recording is a chronological track number of that. So fplus_live_4a.mp3 is album F Plus Live, track 8
Genre: Podcast
Comment: thefpl.us
Composer [whoever edited this specific episode]
Album Artist: The F Plus [this is probably unnecessary]
I just tested and found out that you can take an episode with chapters and process it thru mp3tag and it'll keep the chapter info.

Is there a spreadsheet for us to track work, in case we don't end up doing the same episodes? Just a Google Doc or something.

I've just been pouring the episodes I've been doing in this thread, but maybe later I can start a Google Sheet for it.
-
I got impatient and made a gdoc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MMkI0ahNvO_o9BjKK09jzMbb5ve8mMPGgLYyL0mqa-4/edit?usp=sharing
Feel free to add fields or deal with the non-standard episode rows, it's pretty bare bones at the moment.
-
In my design fork I've added a per-episode indicator of which eps have chapters.

Also added credit for chapter providers
