Hey, fun fact, you don't want your body to constantly be in ketosis unless you absolutely have to because if there's an additional stressor affecting your blood pH regulation you might go into ketoacidosis and possibly die.

Bleeding from your gums is a telltale symptom of scurvy, and meat doesn't have a lot of vitamin c in it (fish has even less). Most mammals make their own vitamin c, except for primates (and apparently capybaras and guinea pigs)

also hey, fun fact, liver has a shitload of vitamin A in it, as a matter of fact it has way too much for you and can cause hypervitaminosis A, and that's without talking about all the heavy metals and stuff in liver

So the first NoFap guy was taking "TRT shots", and apparently the TRT stands for "testosterone replacement therapy", which seems like maybe a more likely cause for an increase in testosterone. Given the subreddit, I'm sure there are good medical reasons for this and the dosage is definitely proportionate.

Something I feel is a common issue within these fad diet and alternative health communities is people who can't comprehend the principle of correlation not implying causation.

A lot of things that are actually good for your health aren't exactly fun or tasty: Exercise can be difficult and daunting to people, and healthy foods are often less delicious than their unhealthy counterparts. The problem I think a lot of these diet weirdos run into is that they seem to have come to the conclusion that ANYTHING that's unpleasant to eat or do is healthy. So you stuff like what was seen in this community, where people's bodies are actively rebelling against their terrible, meat only diets, and they're all just "Oh, I'm absolutely miserable and feel like shit...that must mean I'm getting healthy!"

EDIT: What the fuck is up with Redditors being so obsessed with their testosterone levels?

In my experience, reddit is 50% sourdough bread pictures, 50% nutjobs.

I don't understand how people can be this disconnected from reality. Not just the entire fad diet pseudoscience, but the mentality of insulating yourself from any sort of normal human rationality, both argumentative and emotional. The layers of psychological aberrations astounds me. Eating only meat is not healthy, pigs are not chimeras, and eating charcoal is not a form of health supplement.

I'm lucky I'm not much of a drinker. My liver would have been a deflated necrotic balloon at this point.

A Meat, July 11, 2020, 04:42:16 pm

Isn't animal muscle fiber deficient in basically every micronutrient? I'm pretty sure these guys eating nothing but steak and bacon are courting a wide and exciting range of nutritional deficiencies. (IIRC, it is possible to eat a nutritionally complete diet primarily from animal products, as demonstrated by cultures in places like the Arctic Circle where vegetable foods are limited or unavailable, but that diet requires a fairly complex combination of animal parts, not just Reddit-approved Man Foods(tm) + some liver because you read somewhere the liver's where the vitamins are.)

Anyway, I love how every character Achilles plays in this episode is just the saddest wimpiest little dude. It definitely fits the "sad guy who wanders from subreddit to subreddit in hopes of curing his ennui" model, like Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap if every episode he found a new way to fuck up and smell weird.

Coming from a place where all fad diet stuff was couched in New Age nonsense about cleansing and energies and reconnecting with nature, it's interesting to see that transmogrified into Internet Atheist nonsense instead.

It's still the same psychology, just with different buzzwords to hook into people's brains. And once they're convinced that dietary self-flagellation will cure all their ills, it doesn't matter what goes wrong or which of their organs shut down. They were just doing it wrong. The diet can never fail, it can only be failed.

I know someone with a debilitating disease, and every time they go out with their family, SOMEONE brings up keto diet. They've also gotten pressure for the same from their sleep doctor, which makes me wonder whether the doctor thinks one should get sleep treatment advice from a dietician.

I'd also like to say that this Reddit community seems to have heard of keto in passing and proceeded to turn the Stupidity Dial to 11. Keto just means you reduce carb intake. You can still eat vegetables.

Of course, the members of the subreddit don't seem to be the brightest or most docile bunch, so this has most likely been presented to them. Followed by a honey-ban. :B

Also, there is a health risk associated with going full-keto for prolonged periods of time, so I'm aware that this isn't a diet to do forever. It's like these redditors haven't heard of exercising or a balanced diet.

Whoever knew that basic fitness advice would be the more-or-less applicable answer? :D :P

What I love about the honey ban is that it'd be easy and fairly sensible to say "honey has way too many carbs to work in this zero-carb diet, so please don't eat it or discuss eating it here," but instead you get this dumb tribalism about whether it's really an animal-based food. I'm guessing this is because there have been some really stupid honey-related slapfights and they're trying to cut that off at the pass? Reading that rules post suggests this place has a loooot of stupid slapfight topics they're trying to cut down on.

Also, holy shit, they tried to make containment subreddits for people who still eat a plant occasionally:

If you are interested in a meat-heavy diet, one which is almost carnivore but includes some plant foods, which don't cause you issues, this is not the appropriate place to have those conversations. There are two potential subreddits that were created to host those discussions. We have r/carnivorish and r/dirtycarnivores. Those subreddits are currently small, but you can help them grow. A responsible person who helps those subreddits become thriving communities will be considered for a moderator position there.
Both of those subreddits have one post saying "hey, this sub is open now!," and that's it. Amazing.

They're definitely stupider than people who use keto as a fad diet thing, because at least ketosis is an actual condition you can put your body into, even if it's not a particularly good one.

I remembered they mentioned some book in the intro post so I went and looked it up--it's by an Arctic explorer who tried an all-meat diet after seeing that the Inuit mostly ate meat. The other big person they look up to is Owsley Stanley, a sound engineer for The Grateful Dead.

This episode is so good, there's something really funny about being so dumb that you've reintroduced scurvy as a consistent problem in modern life.

But I also got to defend sous vide. Sous vide steak is really good, it comes out perfect and tender and rare every time, searing it in a cast iron pan is super quick and low-effort compared to cooking it on there all the way. And sous vide ribs are incredible.

Reading up a bit more about the Inuit diet that the Arctic explorer went crazy for, it worked because they ate a wide variety of animals, the meat tended to be high in fat, and  they'd eat any part of the animal that was edible, not just the meat. It's totally possible to survive like that. Pounding nothing but ground beef and bacon, not so much.

Oh also, this reminds me of my favorite bit about the guy who made Soylent.

So before he did Soylent, he worked out what the optimal food was using some nutrition-per-dollar metric he came up with himself. It was frozen microwave pizzas. He was just eating frozen microwave pizzas day in and day out, and then switched from that to his bespoke protein shake formula, and suddenly he didn't feel like absolute shit, and decided it must be that Soylent is magic, and not that literally anything is preferable to microwave pizza.

It’s also why diabetics have kidneys that are so fucked up- glucose does the same thing, but it’s a bigger molecule so it just shreds the hell out of your kidneys.

The Bulletproof episode was also really big on the min-maxing too.

It's like these people are trying to speedrun life. They're investing time and energy into these micro-optimizations that supposedly make them slightly more alert or slightly less tired, so much so that it seems like the optimization is itself the goal. Maybe not a conscious goal, but these people really seem dedicated to living an optimized life as opposed to living a better life through butter coffee/beef gogurt.

A long while back, in Something Awful's diet subforum, there was a thread about eating bacon and lard and how extremely healthy it was.  Like, literally just getting buckets of lard and eating it.  This became dismayingly popular, and involved a mod who would probate/ban people for pointing out, "Uh, that is not how nutrition works at all."

It kept going until one of the people on the diet had to be put on statins.

So, the answer is, weird nerds both give and take terrible advice and don't research things.  Especially when there's a dedicated space that allows them to enable each other and silence dissent.

And by "weird nerds," I mean humans in general, really.

THE CURSE OF THE WITCH OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB, July 18, 2020, 04:18:06 am
This is very true, and it seems like a lot of the time it's "optimized" around a totally opaque metric. I'm still thinking about the claims from the Bulletproof episode about lowering your "biological age," with vague or no reference to what that actually means (cellular function level? Cellular lifespan? Telomere length? What?). It reminds me of the people you see in gaming circles who are focusing on incredibly weird, confusing metrics of achievement, because that way they can be the best in the world at playing with the fewest button-presses or whatever, instead of anything meaningful.
