Title: Joel's trying to raise $5.5 Million for a new season of MST3k
Post by: CormansInferno on November 10, 2015, 06:58:30 pm
Apparently during the Summer Joel and Shout Factory wrestled the rights back from Best Brains and are now trying to crowdfund new episodes (on Kickstarter, of cuss) (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mst3k/bringbackmst3k). Here's the breakdown:

(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/004/876/795/c8d784c0024a11bdd4624fb49395bfee_original.jpg?v=1447133092&w=680&fit=max&auto=format&q=92&s=951297629f0702f2f2c4fec7566939b1)

A lofty goal to be sure, but it went live today and they're nearly at $1 Million.

Not gonna lie, I've already thrown money at this. Given the past history of MSTies overspending on promoting the show, it'd be a surprise if they don't at least hit their middle funding goals.

I'm curious about the all new cast aspect of this. It's supposedly Jonah Ray as the shadow host in the Kickstarter video, it wouldn't be terrible if he's the new Joel/Mike but I'm not sure he'd be my first choice. On the other hand, MST has a proud, rich tradition of swapping out everyone, so a third host/new Crow and Servo wouldn't necessarily be horrible. On the whole I'm maybe 10% cautious, 90% stupidly optimistic to see how this turns out.

I grew up loving Mystery Science Theatre, it's been a big part of my life.

I have no interest in this.

I still like Rifftrax though.

Yeah, Rifftrax is really in its prime and is doing now what MST3K did so well back in its day. To me this seems... not bad, probably more superfluous than anything. I'll check it out if it ends up happening, but I doubt I'll end up backing it.

Well, Joel pulled in $5.7 million. With some additional non-Kickstarter funding, that's enough for 14 episodes, including a Christmas special.

Hoping these don't suck too, but Ernest Cline is joining the writing team at some point in the production, and I'd rather have a back tooth pulled than read "Ready Player One" past the four pages I read in the bookstore. So my spirits are kind of dampened, and it's looking like a "Wait until they release, then get hyped" thing.

Still.

They can just put him in charge of 80s and 90s references and then spend the rest of production time doing things that are funny instead.

I love MST3K but I'll be honest, when I went to the page and saw Felicia Day I just said "oh" and closed the tab.

I read like half way through Ready Player One and the only thing that Ernest Cline could write in that space in a somewhat enjoyable manner is the experience of playing a video game you're good at.

Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

After seeing the heavy ambivalence towards this I thought "maybe it's best to not give this money up front." Since then it's just been a hit parade of The Internet's Favorite People (tm) getting involved and I'm regretting pulling out less and less.

It's really going to hurt to hear Servo do a Gangnam Style joke.

I would honestly kind of prefer it if they made new bots- I know, Crow's voice changed, but it's going to be super weird to hear a voice coming out of Tom Servo that isn't Kevin Murphy's.

To play Nerdball's advocate, a lot of the hiring makes sense. Patton Oswalt is a longtime MST3k fan and hosted the 20th Anniversary at Comic-Con. Joel has been friends with Jonah Ray since they met on the Nerdist podcast. Rebecca Sugar hired Joel as a voice actor on Steven Universe because of her own MST3k apperciation. Wayne White designed roughly half the puppets on Pee-Wee's Playhouse and has been working on projects with Joel since a few years ago. Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn are really fucking funny and all we have to go off at this point are promo videos that were cut in a day or less. Ernest Cline and Felicia Day ... alright, I got nothin'. But still, it's not like Joel was brought a stack of headshots by a Nerdist intern, these are all relatively organic hires of people who are Joel's friends or were orginally inspired by the show. I think it's going to be pretty goddamn awesome.

At the latest Doug Benson Movie Interruption (basically a live MST3k-like experience Benson runs every month at my local arthouse) the new host and bots were cracking on Baby's Day Out. Joel knows exactly what he's doing, these guys are going to do the show right.

Well, the first episode is streaming today only for kickstarter backers as a preview for when the full season drops later this week.  It's just as good as it every was and is definitely worth the kickstarter money.

I was wondering if the new cast and crew were going to take a while to find their stride, but they hit the ground running.

I was worried when one of the first things I heard about going in was that the sketches were bland, but I think the person complaining must have forgotten that most of the sketches in most of the original episodes were bland. It was fine! I'm looking forward to Tuesday (or Friday, when I can watch them on a nice big TV screen.)

Two episodes in and I love season 11. Really glad I donated 85 bucks to get early streaming access, downloads of season 11, and downloads of 18 classic episodes. Honestly didn't know about the early access until last night, and originally the deal was 6 classic episodes. Hooray for kickstarter luck.

It took a couple episodes for the "I HATE TOM SERVO'S NEW VOICE" effect to wear off but I'm really enjoying it and I'm glad my name is in the credits of one of the episodes.

The movies this season are still clearly bad, but they're actually watchable by general technical proficiency standards.

So I was actually flabbergasted when in AVALANCHE Rock Hudson lived until the end of the movie and received no ironic comeuppance for his sins (unless you count his mother dying I guess but who cares.) I demand my disaster movie cliches!

Thanks, guys, for reminding me to check this out. I love it! I feel like the new voices are just like adjusting to voices (and whole people) in the original run of MST3K so it doesn't even bother me. I watched the first episode and it was such a whimsical romp down riff lane.

I honestly couldn't get through the first episode. The pacing of the riffs felt a bit off, without giving each riff enough time to breath. It was like watching a movie with someone who keeps making unfunny comments at the screen and you want to just say "shh!". I'm not fully sold on the new mads or the new Gypsy.

But there's plenty of good things so far: Jonah seems to be a good host, the new voices for Crow and Servo are fine., and the movie choices are perfect.

I'm watching the second episode now and the riffing is a lot better. I think that they just needed to work out the kinks a bit, so I'm cautiously optimistic for the rest of the season.

Yeah, the riff pacing is really weird at times. It's clear that the writers are still getting used to writing riffs for movies. Also, I really dislike the opening. Otherwise, I think they've got a good start.

The riffs start calming down a lot after the third episode. If I remember correctly "write some riffs" was a Kickstarter reward, so they probably had a lot that they were pretty much obligated to use.

I'm positively surprised so far. Sure it's different from the old MST3K, but it was always going to be. Sure, there are some issues and things I don't like, but that's pretty much always the case with the first episodes of a new TV show. All in all it's good enough that I'm gonna keep watching and hope they can iron out the kinks.

The first few eps were rough, but it really clicked around four or five. I really liked Jonah Ray, the new bots kept the soul of the old bots, and I liked the set design. The only bad part was the GUEST STAR CAMEOS! >:(
Bad cameos, guys. Bad job at that.

My fears were unfounded and while the first few episodes were so packed to the brim with riffs that it felt really rehearsed and too quick to keep up with, this season is really clicking with me! I think it is pretty good.
