Title: what's your poison (and by poison i mean delicious alcohol)
Post by: chai tea latte on April 09, 2013, 05:05:48 am
So, I am a really big fan of gin! Also beer, the stouter the better. Brown ale, Guiness, porters, all that good stuff. I also sometimes drink wine, though given that my wine-purchasing has historically been 'this label is typeset nicely and it is also cheap' I've had...mixed results.

What all do you guys like to drink, when you do? If you do (are you a straightedge punk person? Why?) Why is gin objectively better than other spirits? What's up with, like, tequila? All that stuff.

also i am kind of drunk right now (I think delcat once said 'in my cups' here to mean drunk and it is a delightfully folksy expressino but i fell like if i tried to say that a friend would rightly punch me for bengi a nonce) so pretend i said something equally cool and also endearing here and yeah that

It's actually a British colloquialism and I wasn't even drunk at the time, just thoughtful, so I reckon you have more right than me to say it

I don't drink very often because it fucks with my meds, but I'm a fan of flavored vodka mixed into Kool-Aid or soda or what have you.  I mean, fuck, they have marshmallow vodka.  They could just make that a soda flavor to begin with and I'd be happy.

There exists cake vodka, and while it is an awful heresy in the name of Liquor it is also so incredibly tasty. Like, I got super american-college-girl drunk off it at a party once and it was amazing. Tasted exactly like a...you know, those white cakes with the rainbow sprinkles? They can be bundt-pan cakes but don't have to be...that thing, with a slight hint of plastic (which disappeared entirely after the first taste). So good./

I don't drink much, but when I do it's mostly mixed-drinks I make myself by just randomly throwing together stuff. I'm also rather fond of Tokaj wine, but since the good ones are ridiculously expensive here in Finland I rarely have the chance to drink that.

My house has two gins: Hendrick's (the pricier stuff) and New Amsterdam (the well drink).  I like them both.  Hendrick's is behaved and has kind of a cucumber taste to it, New Amsterdam is a nuclear assault of juniper.

I like my brown liquors:  there's always a bottle of bourbon on my desk, my readin' juice.  I'm not that fussy but I've liked Jim Beam the best so far.  I just slug from the bottle when the time is right.

I'm not a huge scotch fan, but there's a bottle of Oban 14 and Glen Breton (mostly because this one is Canadian and the Scottish are kind of upset over its naming) that linger about.

Vodka?  Tito's exclusively.  Vodka is normally on part with cheap organic solvent for me, but this shit is really smooth and drinkable, reasonably economical, and mixes well, so it goes well with the lady and her friends.

Sometimes I'll get a bottle of Fine Sève (maple whiskey) whenever I can, but I have to cross the border and seek out an ADQ (Quebecois regulated liquor store, the equivalent of Ontario's LCBO) to get a bottle.

We have also girly drink stuff (amaretto-equivalents, irish cream, etc.) but that's not my thing.  G&Ts are about as mixed drink as I usually get.

I love me a drink. I accept beers of most descriptions and cannot be trusted with rum. I'm picky only when it comes to whiskey, in which case my heart belongs to Whistlepig. Pricey, but good glory is it tasty.

My favorite mixes include the dark n stormy and hunch punch. Never said I was a classy boy.

ETA: I generally don't enjoy grape wine, but I regularly make small batches of other fruit wines. I've made strawberry, elderberry, and peach in recent memory. Once the appropriate season rolls around my basement will be invaded by burbling jugs of dandelion wine in the making.

Note: I make some country-ass wine, so don't ask me for advice. Leave me to my own dangerous devices.

Whiskey is greatest.

I typically drink rye whiskey. Either Old Overholt or Ryan and Woods when I can afford it. Tyrconnell 10 year Single Malt is by far my favorite, but I can never find it around here, and I can't order booze online because I live in MA.

Bourbon wise, Jim Beam Black or Wild Turkey are fine by me, but if I want something classy I go straight for Booker's. Booker's is hands down my favorite bourbon.

I've taken to drinking Torontos, which OO is great in:

Rye
Fernet-Branca
A little simple syrup
dash of Angostura bitters
Orange peel

Thanks for reminding me about the rye there, Jérôme.

Occasionally there will be a bottle of rye in the house, though I've stuck with Alberta Premium.  I think partially because it's not a bad drink at all, and partially because I really, really dig the irony of a me drinking something with Alberta on the bottle.  It also mixes well in small quantities with juices and other summer drinks to shift the flavour profile; it kills a lot of the sweet flavour in potassium-rich berry juice, for instance, without using more than a quarter-shot or so per glass--and that's one of my favourite evening drinks after a lot of physical activity.

Also I need to pay attention, because it's a frikkin' SAQ, not ADQ.  Seriously, my posts have had stupid typos all day.

I think I've gone on about beers before, but I love a good IPA.  In a pinch, La Cinquante will do.  I was surprised by how much I liked it, but that also makes sense.

I've picked out wines based very broadly on what I'm looking for in terms of what I was planning to cook--generally I find an excuse to try some random sharp white-or-other with richer meals just to act as a palate cleanser; criteria being that said white must come in a glass bottle.  Carton wine is a crime, pass it on.

When I do drink, which is considerably less often than I used to, I'll drink a teeny glass of white wine. My selection process for bottles of wine goes: Hey, I'm at Trader Joes! What's $1 more than three-buck-chuck? I also really love hoppy or sour beers, or dark, dark creamy beers. We have wonderful local brewerys and there are some great local beers.

This thread has got me thinking that since I drink so little maybe I should splurge on wines that cost more than $4...

Christ son, if you're going to bridal and baby showers were carton wine is the order of the day, you really need to reassess your life and start meeting people who don't live in trailer parks.  People who drink carton wine call their daughters Britnee.

Utnaphistim, April 09, 2013, 05:48:50 pm

Oh hell yes, son.  Hell yes.

The Greater North American White Trash is sort of a broad species, broken down into a variety of subspecies.

For instance, Homo Trailericus tends to form small cubicle dwellings of pressed wood particles.  They're quite enthralled by cubical shapes and often drink beverages from them (qv: cube wine).

Homo Ninjacus is often found in urban cores and is highly specialized for this environment.  They've adapted to the reduced availability of water sources by armouring their flesh with what, at first glance, could be unwashed skin flakes.  Many of them often attempt to camouflage themselves in their urban environment with the use of white and black facepaint.

I could go on; there's quite a lot of subspecies of GNAWT, but we're supposed to be discussing liquor, so let me hastily add the one time I had barley wine, it was fantastic in a guilty pleasure sort of way, but I've no idea who makes it around my neck of the woods.

Hey, don't go knocking down boxed wine! I mean, there are boxes and then there are boxes. Case and point, my parents are members of the Knights of Wine, so they know people who can get you the really good stuff for discount prices. I mean, sure a box wine is not a party wine, but it's perfectly fine for dinner at home.

Right. Franzia is obviously terrible (and leads to butt chugging (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpLRS0RzKoY)), but there's stuff like Bandit, Black Box, and Yellow And Blue that are the exact same as Australian wines like YellowTail, but in cheaper packaging. Also it's nice to have a box on-hand so you can get a glass of wine whenever you like, rather than needing to commit to a bottle.

STOG, when I grow up, if I have half your gift for metaphor I will count myself as truly blessed.

On my poison: decent beer - Newcastle, Heineken, Red Brick Brown, Red Brick Pale; gin and ginger ale, typically Seagram's; whiskey (Ivy Mountain) and Scotch.  I also sometimes splash whiskey or apple-brandy in my morning coffee.

I enjoy a pleasant combination of Brandy and 7UP, for a 'Brandy Old Fashioned', which I hear you can't really find anywhere else in the US (at a bar). As well as random import beers from the local 'pick 6' usually. I recommend finding one of those and playing around, its a rewarding experience.

The Kraken brand rum

Been meaning to try this, and after this review I will certainly expedite that. I usually drink the cheapest rail rum when I go out to the bars, this might be a nice change of pace.

My favorite gin is Number 3 (http://no3gin.com/), although that's hard to find. Fortunately, Voyager (http://pacificdistillery.com/index2.htm#5) is also pretty good.  Both of them are great in martinis as well as G&T - nicely blended with wonderful citrus notes and they're junipery but not like drinking Pine-Sol.

My favorite trashy drink is Amaretto and Cherry 7-Up.

Also, Ian Fleming called it "the drunkard's drink" and if that was good enough for him it's good enough for me.

Two mixed drinks that you may or may not have tried and are tasty:

The Jack Rose: 1 shot apple brandy (usually applejack, I use calvados), half a shot of lemon or lime juice, and a splash of grenadine, shaken with ice, strained.

The daiquiri: No I don't mean the shitty fruity blended strawberry abomination that you're thinking of! I mean the original one.  One shot rum, half a shot of lime juice, and a splash of simple syrup or similar (I use agave nectar), shaken with ice and strained.

here's a question I've been meaning to ask for ages and this might as well be the place to ask: I'm someone who doesn't drink (I've tried a few things and they've always been too strong/bitter for me, I think part of the deal is that during my youth my mom tried to treat my mental issues with homeopathic remedies and some of those had alcohol content, so now I associate the taste of alcohol with that stuff), and while I'm not interested in making it a habit or anything, I'd be interested in finding if there's any booze I actually like the taste of. What's a good booze for someone with no alcohol experience? keep in mind that I am the kind of person who would probably be into mixing it with fruit smoothie stuff more than drinking it straight.

I drank Sourpuss in high school and it doesn't taste like alcohol at all. It's also not "good booze",though, if that that really matters. (it doesn't)

Alcohol is an acquired taste and you're prob just going to have to stick with it for a few tries to get new associations.

if anything this means that we can blame homeopathic remedies for not only being a useless placebo but also for making me hate the taste of booze

Tiny I honestly can't stand the taste of alcohol and I don't think I have had a full beer once in my 6 year legal drinking life yet there is one thing that I can stand and actually enjoy drinking. That drink is a Swedish cider called Rekorderlig, my favourite being the strawberry and lime variety. There is a slight alcoholic taste but it is barely noticeable, the only downside is that it is a bit on the expensive side in my eyes, some restaurants over here will charge $12 for a 500ml bottle though I have been told our alcohol is expensive. As for mixing I am pretty sure that isn't a cider thing but it has fruit in it already so maybe that passes?

I'm lame and I stick to vodka and sprite with a lime wedge or two. Or vodka mixed with anything. Or general ciders (the probably shitty ones like Angry Orchard and what not).

My roommate has gotten me to like Malibu and Coke so that's a plus.

Everything North Coast makes is pretty great. Old Stock Ale has been showing up discounted at the local Grocery Outlets and I bought enough to destroy a few of my organs.

Other than that, imperial stouts, baltic porters and bourbon are what floats my boat.

Imperial stouts are my favorite thing. I feel like I come off as such a tryhard bringing them up, though. Lately I'm into Nitro's Wake Up Dead, but I'm waiting eagerly until it's winter enough to get Old Rasputin where I live. Otherwise I'm pretty big on IPAs, stouts, scotch ales and bocks/doppelbocks.

I also like vodka - straight occasionally if it's really good, but usually in a bloody or a moscow mule. Sprecher brewery also makes a wicked hard ginger beer.

It's been a while since I've been here, but I'm really enjoying Founder's Breakfast Stout. I don't typically drink coffee because it makes me really jumpy, but this particular stout is a wonderful blend of oats, chocolate, and coffee, and is absolutely perfect for drinking on cold nights in front of a game of Kentucky Route Zero.

I was a late bloomer when it came to booze (grad school brought it out in me, as it seems to for everyone), but I've found that I enjoy hard cider, rum and coke (or whiskey and coke, either way), and Riesling wine. I'm not much of a beer guy, but I had a couple of Sierra Nevadas recently (the Kölsch and the Kellerweis) that were really good.

You know how usually when you work in an industry that serves food or beverage you get really tired of the stuff they serve at work?

Doesn't apply when you work at a liquor store.

Yeah, except more like 20$ bottles. The liquor store I work in is in this weird bohemian nouveau riche hipster part of town, so people don't spend that big often. When they do, it is more often on scotch.

I've been on antibiotics all week but I run out tonight and that means I can get druuunk this weekend!
Box wine is the best drunk-per-dollar in my opinion.  Perfect alcohol-to-nastiness ratio.  It's what I drink at home.  Or I'll make some kind of liqueur highball if I'm feeling fancy (campari-soda, cynar-soda, grand marnier and cream soda, etc).

If I'm out drinking, my poison is trying to order a negroni or a daiquiri by ingredients, drinking one over stale ice, and then giving up and ordering a can of PBR.

Oh I love that!  There was a bar I used to go to where I drank a really excellent drink once.  It was one of their drink specials.  The next time I ordered it, it was completely different.  I kept ordering it and it was actually kind of fun, it'd be within the same general parameters but came in different glassware with different garnishes, etc.  But yes, normally this would be infuriating.

I am a beer snob, I enjoy all the craft brewed stuff. If there are more than twenty people working at the brewery, I probably am not drinking it. In all reality I am spoiled for choice, Living in the Pacific Northwest means that I have access to the best beer in the world without really having to look hard, I mean there is a taphouse in my town that has 25 craft beers on tap at all times.

If I am not drinking beer, I'm a sucker for Scotch. Or Mead, that is truly the nectar of the gods.

It was hard ciders for the most part for a long time (fucking Wyder's Repesado Pear is the best thing on this planet), but after surgery I'm supposed to be on a lifetime ban on carbonation. I'll break the rules every once in awhile for a cider, but anything mixed with pop is 100% out. So I've been slowly adding in liquors to make some mixed drinks, and have taken a shine to meads/honeywines. Works out really well, since Michigan strangely has a lot of wineries/breweries (whatever the terminology) that make mead.

The recipe in the side bar is totally wrong, it leaves out the Violet Liqueur which is essential in making a fantastic Aviation.
This is the brand (http://the-bitter-truth.com/2011/02/22/aviation-cocktail/) of violet liqueur I use and as such, a similar ratio for the recipe.
In other gin news, I found that Plymouth makes a navy strength gin so I'm restocked.  If you're unfamiliar with the term, it means high enough proof that if spilled on gun powder, it's still ignitable.  That means this gin is 114 proof.  It is amazing if you can handle it.

If you like Scotch, try other whisk(e)y!  If you like something complex and mixed, go for rye in a sazerac or Manhattan.  If you want something sweeter, you can try bourbon in the same drinks or do a sweeter drink.  Try something like a mojito without the lime juice--swap in bourbon for the rum and go heavy with the mint and sugar.  You can add lemon juice if you want for a whiskey smash, or leave it out for a mint julep.  These are some of my favorite summertime drinks.

If you're looking to branch out, start trying interesting liqueurs and fortified wines in highballs!  Also great for summer.  Consider investing in a bottle of Lillet blanc, Campari, Cynar, or Aperol, and some little bitty bottles of club soda.  Take your big bottle and mix yourself 1 shot of liqueur/wine with as much or as little soda as you want with plenty of ice.  Try different levels of dilution to see what you like, and if you don't end up enjoying the liqueur on its own, you can mix it into a batch of sangria.  If you like these, move on to other bitters, interesting wines, and amari!  The possibilities are endless.

To reiterate the advice I gave over pm:

A) go to cocktail bars while they're relatively quiet and order drinks. Ask the bartender why things work together.
B) buy Angostura and orange bitters
C) try a Horse's Neck made with brandy (i like both fruit brandies and cognacs, you might too).
D) find a vodka, gin, and whisk(e)y drink you like and you'll always be able to order or mix something you want
E) friends don't let friends drink Long Islands.

I actually like the honey southern comfort (straight, I'm a monster), and cake vodka, though, so you should probably ignore my advice.

Nifty Nif, July 10, 2016, 04:52:17 pm
I can't recommend calvados since I used to make my own applejack. Sorry! You want something that's a nice happy gold colour. Use it to make a Jack Rose or try it with ginger ale.

I started drinking brandy because my grandmother used to, although I don't drink it straight like she did. I like fruity brandies for making Horse's Necks and the few times I've had cognac (VS - aged two or three years - is enough for me although fuuuuuuuck when I tried a shot of Hennessey XO it was super nice) it was also nice but not caramelly enough. I usually drink HNs, G&Ts, and rum and cokes if I'm mixing something at home (and cider or wine if I'm not), but vary it up when I go out.

Anything aged less than 4 years (VSOP) will probably have some of that fusel bite if you're sipping it.

Agree 100%.  This is how I learned of a ton of different ways to drink gin.  And also how my friend bought me a ton of whiskey to try and convince me of its superiority (he failed).

And relating to point E, there's a cocktail lounge I go to that in their lengthy liquor list, has only one vodka listed and a note to not order a long island.  They're mainly a whiskey bar but they have a nice selection of rare gin which is why I go.

i have recently discovered the joy of growler fill stations. so in the course of my daily regular grocery shopping I can go and get a 6pack worth of beer filled for considerably less money and have it be considerably more fresh.

yes please!

it feels like in Vancouver growler refills are the main way people drink beer. There are just so many breweries and they're all so accessible it's hard not to just get a refill on your way home from work or whatever.

The best thing is to go try a couple of beers and get a growler of whichever one you liked most and then have a glass of it with dinner. Growler fills are great.

These are alos a great way to experience the many flavors and joys of local microbreweries.

I'm drinking some actual scottish scotch. It doesn't say how long it was aged, so it probably wasn't particularly long. Still okay, though. I can drink it on the rocks and go 'I am drinking an acceptable scotch'.

Also, I realize now as I'm typing this post that I bought scotch whiskey and not bourbon. I got four hours of sleep last night.

YOu know I don't think I've ever had scotch straight before this. Sort of a halfway point between whisky and bourbon. Not bad, very drinkable.

I don't drink alcohol and sort of wanted to talk about it/ask about it a bit. I know this is bordering on "Hi I don't have this problem, bye. :)" territory but I'm thinking maybe it'll seem less attention-whorey to post this in an EXISTING thread concerning alcohol than making a new one just to talk about myself in.

But basically I never had any interest in consuming alcohol, the smell and aroma of it never appealed to me, the dangerous/stupid stuff my friends bragged about doing while/after consuming it concerned me, and when asked about it I'd joke that my first drink had to be on board an English steam train (I'm a NYer) which got me a lot of "respect" from people who would otherwise have given me grief for not drinking.

When I was 26 I went to my friend's wedding which was basically my first major social event since turning 21.

During the reception the groom's sister reprimanded me in front of everyone for being inappropriate for toasting with the soft drink I got from the open bar instead of the wine that was at all the tables, and when I got back home my dad lectured me several times over when I accidentally mentioned that I ordered a shirley temple at the open bar and my dad said it was a kids drink and I'm too old for that and that if he was a girl and he was interested in me he'd lose interest in me as a potential boyfriend if he saw me ordering a shirley temple at my age, but honestly I'll be shocked if I ever at any point in my life end up having a girlfriend under any circumstances anyway.

When I was 27 I actually got to have a ride on an English steam train and try a beer and I didn't like it at all. When i got home I tried again and it honestly didn't do anything for me whatsoever but put a literal bad taste in my mouth and make my stomach feel bad, and I haven't tried again since nor have I wanted to.

I'm almost 29 now and when I mention I like root beer, they always assume I mean the alcoholic root beer that's becoming popular now, like theres no reason I would want a "kids" root beer, and when I tell people who don't know me I don't drink alcohol they either think I'm some kind of manchild who refuses to grow up or that I'm a recovering alcoholic.

I don't even dislike alcohol or people who enjoy it, I've even had a long running fascination with sommeliers and wine making, I just sort of have this weird problem where I feel sort of intrinsically defective in almost every aspect of what the world around me seems to expect of me as an adult, and I really don't know how I'm supposed to function outside of my extremely small circle of eccentric and/or literally autistic friends who don't make a big deal of the fact that I don't drink alcohol.

SuperTrainStationH, December 20, 2016, 09:42:20 am

Hello, as a non-drinker who is also a weird person socially I am very familiar with these issues!

First, drinking is a thing that most people do, so if you don't do it there will be occasional moments of awkwardness no matter what you do, because someone is going to assume you do. That's okay, and it's important to remember that bit of awkwardness isn't the fault of either party, and also not a big deal, because it's just caused by somebody not knowing information. Once they know you aren't drinking right then, it shouldn't be an issue.

Obviously, sometimes it IS an issue, like in the examples you listed. Someone will not understand why you wouldn't want to drink, or will take offense at a social norm being ignored. The most important thing in those situations is to turn down the alcohol being offered confidently but quickly. Make it very mundane and most people won't give a shit, after all, even people who drink don't do so every time they go out. Most of the time that I would find myself in the awkward situation of explaining why I don't drink was when I'd decline nervously, or feel the need to actually say "oh, I don't drink" rather than just declining. Most people will just assume you aren't drinking right then, as opposed to ever, which is a totally normal thing, and nobody has any reason to learn "oh, actually I never drink, and *longer, potentially awkward explanation*" until they get to know you well enough that it won't be awkward to explain it.

You'll still find yourself in situations with people who know you a bit better who want you to drink, like the ones you mentioned. They can politely fuck themselves, you don't owe anyone anything. It's super-rude of the groom's sister to fucking police what you're drinking, way ruder than any possible insult you could have given by not toasting with the right drink. And if a girl would lose interest in you because you ordered the wrong drink, then probably that wouldn't have worked out anyway.

The only thing I'd really say is that people who don't drink because they've never tried it and are sheltered or scared of it should at least consider giving it a shot before writing it off, but since you've done that already and found you didn't like it, you're 100% justified and fuck the haters.

Alcohol is an acquired taste, and like with a great many other things, you're going to have to try it a lot before you'll finally begin to like it. Most people get over this acquisition period pretty quick because they just want to get drunk. [freakout] Not that I'm telling you to keep drinking if you don't have any interest in doing so.

I either drink expensive micro/craft brewed beers or the cheapest boxed wine or bottom shelf whiskey. Debating whether or not to follow my great-great grandfather's footsteps & learn how to distill moonshine. Dude was a marine coppersmith during the Prohibition & family lore has it he made more than a few stills.

Edit: also dude above me, on fancy occasions like weddings, holidays, formal dinners etc try asking for sparkling cider. It's usually served in a wine glass and socially takes the place of wine (at least in my neck of the woods). This will make it handy for toasts etc since it's usually treated similar to wine despite not being alcoholic. Soda may be seen as 'cheap' which might be why your dad didn't like it for a toast. You should never be forced to drink alcohol if you don't want to. Anyone who says 'no you HAVE to have wine/beer/liquor/etc' is a dunce. There's all sorts of reasons not to drink ranging from driving to medicines to past alcoholism to just not liking the stuff and it's all legit, and no one should make you uncomfortable about not drinking. I'm sorry but I think your dad is a bit of a jerk for teasing you about your choice of drinks. Who cares if you get a Bloody Mary or Shirley Temple, or some fruity mocktail, if it tastes good and you like it that's all that matters

Yeah, a sparkling cider like a martinelli's or something is basically the official "fancy" drink at times like Christmas/Thanksgiving if you're a non drinker, at least in my family/where I live.

Stuff tastes really good too if that's a bonus, so much so that I still make sure to always snag a glass during special occasions

I love alcohol, from both a scientific point of view and a drinking point of view. Beer's my drink of choice, especially craft beer, but I'm not really picky. I'm lucky that I live near a brewery (that do some great beers) and at certain times of the day you can smell the hops as you walk down the street.  I've really fallen in love with the beers from Innis & Gunn, especially the ones that they age in spirit caskets. I also occasionally drink Brew Dog because they're local to me.

I've made Chinese rice wine before as well. It tastes nice, easy to ferment and keeps well in the fridge so it's handy for cooking.

Picked up a bottle of Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye on Friday because it was on sale and I've heard good things about it. So far I'm really impressed. It's a really good whisky served neat and it was only 35 bucks. I also got a bottle of Glenlivet Founder's Reserve Single Malt Scotch. It's not too bad, but I wish it had a bit more to it. After I graduate I'm getting myself some higher tier scotch, like 80 to 100 bucks. If anyone here has some scotch input I'd love to hear it, I've been putting off buying a good bottle for a while now because I just don't know what to commit to.

I hear the word "scotch" and came running. I live in Scotland, so my recommendations might not be as readily available where you are, but I'll try and give some general advice.

The problem with Scottish whiskey is that often you're just paying for the brand. The manufacturing process is similar for all of them, apart from some differences like the barrels its aged in and whatnot. Your price range is sensible, and you could get a decent single malt whiskey for that price. For recommendations, I quite like Chivas Regal 12, but single malts are usually nicer than blended whiskeys in general.

Also, some Scottish whiskeys are "smoky" tasting due to peat being used when the grains are malted. It's a love it or hate it thing, from my experience, so you might buy a full bottle of it and hate the taste.Get some minatures if you can, so you can try before you buy. Alot of whiskeys from the Western isles are often smoked due to more peat being available than on the mainland. The Arran 10 year old malt is what I'd recommend.

I hope some of this was useful!

Nice! What better than to get a Scots input on scotch?

Yeah I was more leaning towards a single malt. I'm not too big on blended but then again I've really only had Johnnie Walker. I really only use that in cocktails though. And I'm actually looking for something peaty or smoky, I rather like a nice complex flavour.

Worst case scenario is that I can pick up a good local scotch when I'm in Edinburgh in May. I can't wait, it'll be my first time in the UK, or even off the North American continent.

I've never tasted Johnnie Walker, yet that seems to be the big brand of scotch worldwide. I guess their marketing departing is fantastic!

Oh, watch out where you buy whiskey in Edinburgh! I don't recommened buying anything on the royal mile, because it's a tourist trap and they jack up the prices of everything. Edinburgh is a beautiful city, no denying that, but it's easy to get ripped off.

(If you need any Scottish advice, PM me. May is a great time to visit!)

So, I had promised Trav that I would buy all of his drinks whenever we were together at F Plus Live this year.  The first order Trav placed was for, I forget the beer, but pretty sure it was a Coors Lite and a Red Bull.  May not have been a Coors Light?  Either way, the bartender and I trying to figure out exactly what was being requested was surreal and frustrating for both of us, because neither of us could wrap our brains around the fact that the order was indeed for those two things mixed together, but nobody orders those things separately either, so what the fuck was going on?  The bartender was pretty sure that the order must be for two people.  He refused to mix them, I think on general principle.

Later Trav tried to order a drink on my tab (which was fine by me), but told the bartender my name was Victor Laszlo, which is not exactly how it's spelled on my credit card.  The bartender, who is the only bartender who remembers me between visits other than Tommy at the horse track, came and found me to clarify because "Victor Laszlo sounded like a fake name."  Good lookin' out, buddy.

Speaking of which, one of the best bartenders in town just opened a new cocktail lounge next door to my apartment complex last week.  Already been there twice, might just keep going weekly.  He's really great at making cocktails.

It was a Strongbow apple cider, ordered at the recommendation of one of my cider drinking friends. Also, the sour beer was Gueuze Fond Tradition by Van Honsebrouck.

Post by: Macho Masc Sangy Savage on February 21, 2018, 06:24:21 am
Strongbow's are an extremely solid choice - my favorite is the honey variety.  For national brands, Angry Orchard and Cider Boys are both solid as well. Cider Boys varieties really turn out super sweet, like the grand mimosa isn't even a cider anymore. Another great one is Woodchuck, which used to be the only game in town until gluten free living became a Thing. The raspberry was my go to when I first started drinking. They have seasonal beers that can be good, but definitely buy a single first.

Absolute favorite is Wyder's Ciders reposado pear, where they crammed pear cider in tequila barrels. It looks like mop water, but is amazing.

But the real fun of ciders is since they are fucking easy as shit to make, there's always a few local brewery concoctions to try.

Red's Ale is fucking trash, so is Stella Artois "Cidre" (fucking what).

My advice is if ciders are good but you lean towards sours, look for ciders that are labeled "dry", they might be more your liking.

It's 7am and wrote a lot about beers man I love ciders

Sangry Novel, February 21, 2018, 06:24:21 am

Good advice. I'll try that. When every place in Chicago is so fucking hip it gets pricey to just try things aimlessly.
Although I've had good luck trying stouts aimlessly and those can be really quite the opposite of dry at times.
I guess my dominant feeling is I can enjoy anything as long as it doesn't taste like Leinenkugel's, i.e. dog fur and stale vomit.

Neal, March 16, 2019, 04:37:46 pm

Well, there's still one question here, which is "for what purpose?" If you're specifically looking for a whiskey to enjoy by itself, like in a glass with maybe an ice cube, then you probably want Tullamore Dew. 12Y if you can afford it, but the regular Tully is still pretty nice by itself.

If you're looking for something mixed (probably with ginger beer/ginger ale), then you either want Jameson or Bushmills. Personally, I am very much on the Jameson side of this debate because it's fun to pretend I'm Catholic every once in a while, but also while Bushmills would describe itself as "more complex", which is probably true, it's also sweeter, which I don't love. Regular Jameson is reliable and versitile, Jameson Black Barrel is regular Jameson that's been set on fire twice and I think it's excellent.

Most of the others I don't really have experience with other than 2 Gingers. Hey, here's a story: Once upon a time, there was this Irish bar in St. Paul Minnesota where all they served all day is Jameson & Ginger. Everything past this fact is mostly marketing bullshit, point is 2 Gingers is owned by Jim Beam and is perfectly fine when mixed with ginger ale. That's the only thing it's made for and it's fine. Perfectly fine, nothing wrong with it.

I tend to drink my whiskey neat, so that's good to know, although I'm not opposed to adding a mixer for variety sometimes.

I mostly drink beers now, my go-to's are Guinness and James Squire's 150 Lashes, depending on the mood and if I want to feel like I've eaten a full meal. For spirits I go for Kraken spiced rum (mix with pineapple soda, tastes like being a pirate) or Fireball cinnamon whiskey (neat).

I'm generally fine with drinking almost anything but vodka, which makes me instantly and violently ill upon entering my mouth which makes it my actual literal poison.

Finally figuring out the beers I actually like. I'm really digging Tecate. I still definitely prefer whiskey if I want to actually get drunk, but Tecate is nice for just chilling on a weekend.

I think you'll find the correct drink is pastis, it's a french drink made with aniseed, I think I'll find I was wrong about that when I wake up tomorrow feeling like I just scraped my brain off the bottom of my shoe

Hi, ballp.it! I want to tell you about my favorite local beer. This is Hell Yes Ma'am, the flagship brew of Raleigh Brewing Company.

It's 9.2% ABV, because I'm not going to drink alcohol I can't feel.

Do you like root beer? If so, you're probably American.
And you'll also probably like Dr. McGillicuddy's Intense Root Beer.

Yeah, this bottle ain't gonna last long.

Did I inflict the tonic that i make myself because I can't actually afford to keep much in my fridge?

Bourbon, apple cider vinegar, and a little honey. On ice.

Wipes out my mouth but i love vinegar so...

Beefeater is solid. If you're looking for even cheaper New Amsterdam isn't bad, but the trade-off for less rubbing alcohol burn is a slightly sweet orange taste? It's hard to explain. Any cheaper than that you might as well just get vodka

Is Beefeater sufficiently superior to Seagram's Distiller's Reserve that it would be worth paying the $8 more for the same proof and quantity?

Almost every Dogfish Head beer I've had, including the dragon fruit one, has been really good. I'm a big fan of the Sea Quench Ale for the summer, and the Super Eight gose I've been drinking is great too.

I really hope they aren't like Rogue Brewing and ran by turbo assholes

The thing that spoiled Sapphire for me was realizing it tastes very similar to regular gin with Angostura bitters. What's been your favorite gin so far?

I bought fancy clearance cider. It's mint and basil??? Whatever. I can swallow it and it's got a decent amount of alcohol in it. Maybe i should start waiting for bougie bullshit beers and ciders to not sell and go on clearance as the store tries desperately to make any money on it before clearing out the shelf.

I would share... no one asks.

Also, I actually have some experience with the Roku. It is really interesting and tasty, I would say it is a totally different animal than Gordon's or Bombay though. They only have a few bontanicals that are added to the base (juniper infused) spirit. If I remember right it is Sakura leaves and blossoms, Yuzu (japanese bitter orange I think) peel, Sansho Peppercorns (a Japanese black pepper I believe), with sensha and gyokuro tea leaves.

It's got a really light floral and citrus nose, but has a super good herbal vibe on the palate, with a pop of the citrus from the Yuzu, and prickly pepperiness right towards the finish.

I'm generally not super into gins, but it is certainly a nifty one that isn't wildly expensive.

I want to like gin, since I like herbal flavored stuff. The problem is I don't like the taste of pine and every gin I've ever had is dominated by the flavor of pine. Are there any good gins out there (preferably cheap) that don't really taste like pine?

Roku, the gin I mentioned up-thread, is a Japanese gin with a different blend of botanicals that I think better compliment the juniper. This listicle (https://vinepair.com/buy-this-booze/9-gins-for-gin-haters/) also gives some suggestions.

So I LOVE cocktails.
And now that I have a proper kitchen and I can't go to bars (I mean I COULD because this country is dumb but I won't because I'm a little less dumb) I decided to pick up making cocktails myself.
I bought some supplies and a mint plant, logged into makemeacocktail.com, and started mixing.
It was mostly bland at first, but I'm getting better each day to the point where I can supplement some tastes by feel. Here's what I made so far:

Jamaican Orange (Great!)
1   part rum
3   part lemonade
1/2   orange juice

Cuba Libre Cream Soda (Good and sweet)
20 ml    Lemon Juice
45 ml    Dark Rum
125 ml    Cream Soda

Rum Collins (It's meh)
1   Lime Juice
60 ml   White Rum
Top up   Soda Water
1 ml   Sugar

Fitzgerald (Not bad)
22.5 ml   Lemon Juice
22.5 ml   Sugar Syrup
2 dashes   Angostura Bitter
60 ml   Dry Gin

Juan Collins (VERY good!)
1parts   Lemon Juice
1dash   Soda Water
2parts   Tequila
1parts   Sugar Syrup

Fidel Castro (Refreshing!)
1 part   lime juice
4 parts   rum
8 parts   ginger beer

Ginger Mojito (My favorite so far)
15 ml   Lime Juice
8   Mint Leaves
½   Lime
150 ml   Ginger Beer
Teaspoon   Sugar
30 ml   Rum

Rum Punch (Sweet and great!)
22.5 ml   Lime Juice
Substitution: Lime
45 ml   Sugar Syrup
3 ml   Angostura Bitter
67.5 ml   Rum

Copper Gin (basically gin and tonic with ginger ale instead of tonic)
180 ml   Ginger Ale
45 ml   Gin
5 ml   Angostura Bitter

I also tried (and failed) for a regular mojito (crushed ice is essential, it turns out, and I don't have a mixer yet).
As you can tell I mostly enjoy rum, but I'll try and mix it up some more as soon as I get some better stuff.
