Title: Episode 163: This Beat Is Dope
Post by: Lemon on January 23, 2015, 08:07:00 pm
with Boots Raingear Portaxx Kumquatxop Frank West Lemon
content for this episode was compiled by Slayer of Yaks
edited by Lemon.

Drugs are expensive. Plus they're dangerous and illegal besides, so it should come as no surprise that there are swaths of people who are looking for alternative ways to get their collective swerve on. And with the sometimes predatory nature of internet marketing, it should also come as no surprise that there is a substantial number of people who try to convince themselves that listening to bleeps and boops in their headphones will totally give them the best trip of their lives.

This week, we're looking at i-doser.com, a place on the internet where people can attempt just that. There's a company all too happy to take teenagers' money in exchange for those bleeps and bloops, and a forum full of teenagers who want to write about how high they are. The results are so much fun that the episode ended up over an hour after considerable editing. This week, The F Plus finally finds some jenkem.

Roofies are known for increasing the stamina of people at parties, that's why they're called Raise The Roofies

For the record, this is the Lullabye I-Dose (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WexCcpDLjWg). Skip to 7 minutes in and feel yourself drifting off into dreamland! So relaxing!

I don't think I've ever wanted a bunch of obviously deluded idiots to be right as much as I want this lot to be right. Not because I want to get high from audio, but because I want to learn the sort of bullshit they think they're experiencing.

I reflexively wanted to listen to the gender-change one, not because I wanted to experience what the pitch claimed, but because I wanted to find out what the people making/using it thought a 'gender change audio drug' entailed. Then I got disappointed that we're not even at that level, you have to be in multiple stages of denial to reach believing that. I just wish we were in a slightly more fantastical world; not so these things can be real, but so that idiots could honestly think they were.

I really wish they had a CAN-D i-dose in their fiction section, because there is nothing I want more than to listen to some beats that trick my brain into feeling a fictional drug that requires you to purchase certain additional items from a company that has a monopoly over that market to fully enjoy that trip. I feel like the i-dose guys could capitalize on that idea really well, because the people who purchase this seem to be complete suckers anyway.

It's not everyday that I get to reference The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, but I'm glad today is one.

After looking a bit at what the hell binaural beats actually are, and due to finding out that they just sound like slightly vibrating tones, I said fuck it and decided to make my own i-dose, or rather an f-dose, made with 100% freshly juiced binaural beats (or whatever a random program I found on the internet thinks they are) cranked up to a level they shouldn't be and organic heirloom STOG:

I don't know if it was from this particular site or not, but I actually seriously tried this once. Don't judge me too hard, though... I was maybe 14 or 15 and I didn't pay for it.
My friend told me about this cool thing that would make you experience weird stuff through the power of sound!!1! He gave me a burned CD and I could not wait to get home from school and try it. Why not, right?
I guess I was "doing it wrong" because after a minute or so I realized nothing was going to happen. It really is just a bunch of wub wubs and bleeps. I laid there in the dark, trying my best to concentrate. Shockingly, nothing happened and I felt really stupid. At the time it sounded like something that could really be possible (again, this was over 10 years ago don't judge me) My friend and I didn't talk about it at school the next day, so I'm pretty sure he had the same experience. You really have to be in so much denial to think this actually does something to you.
I haven't thought about this in years. I can't believe it still exists and people are profiting from it. Also, what are these weirdos doing to afford $200 sound files and magic crystals and fairy dust?

Same, I tried it when I was around 14 and it did nothing for me (I wonder why!!!). And this was when I was 14 and had an open mind about stupid shit! Maybe the problem was that I went into it thinking "I wonder if this works?" and not "I believe this will definitely work"

Actually one thing I saw on the I-Doser forums that wasn't brought up in the episode (as far as I can remember) was that there were a lot of stories where people said things like "yeah so I took a bunch of shrooms then listened to this I-Dose and it totally worked!! Amazing!!" That would explain a lot

For some reason I was expecting this to be someone playing dubstep through so many filters it sounds like a cassette being chewed out whilst a dot-matrix printer jams.

What I'm saying is I am some how glad to be proven wrong but at the same time this is even more confusing!

This is one of those eps where you read the description and already know it's going to be an instant classic. Every time I think the internet has run out of stupid things to force themselves to believe in, along comes digital jenkem mp3s.

When I was in college, someone linked me to an mp3 file that was maybe 15-ish minutes long, and the claim was that it could give you a ~hands-free orgasm~. I actually listened to it because two different people said it worked, and I wanted to call bullshit.  Initially, I was confused as fuck, because the first ten minutes are just this lady doing a standard hypnosis "relax and go to sleep" deal. I was almost convinced I had the wrong mp3, but then she started talking sexy and it made more sense. The whole audio file had binaural beats in the background, which damn near put me to sleep, but it obviously didn't "work".

It would still be more likely to give someone a boner than the I-Doser viagra track, because it actually used words, which are generally sexier than bleep-blorp noises. Like a downloadable fluffer, maybe. Although this does make me want to go digging for that lady again, just in case there's a market for another hypnosis doc. It would have less PUA-style NLP and more Hypnotic Bratty Princess Miss Hollywood.

That was actually my first encounter with the idea of Financial Domination, but with the added hilarity of the lady making a for-purchase hypnosis audio file that was basically, "you pay me for something that subconsciously compels you to give me money".

I knew someone who used to listen to this stuff, though they were called 'binaural beats' at the time (still are maybe?? Maybe I Doser is just a brand version of this??) and she claimed that they worked for her. After asking her some questions about the experience, I realized that she was literally slipping into a meditative trance, which was something she had been practicing for years, but using weird screechy playback noises as white noise to help her focus inward. I sort of wanted to tell her to please credit her self for all the practice she put into learning to meditate, not the pretty gross sounding meditation aid.

Basically its pretty easy to achieve a weird 'ok I feel kind of dizzy and things look weird' state by going into a heavy focus and controlling your breathing and focusing intently on keeping your mind blank which is WOW EVERYTHING THEY TELL YOU TO DO IN THESE FORUMS BUT YEAH, YOU'LL ACHIEVE A MEDITATIVE TRANCE BY DOING THESE THINGS WITHOUT THE BLEEP BLOOPS, sad day really

I remember being 16 and trying these, despite the fact that we had access to almost all the drugs we were trying.

We managed to find a torrent and try it in the school library and had that "Naw bro I think like, aw I felt something dude." moment. It's weird to see that they went from "this will probably simulate some aspects of the drug" to just full on insane-bullshit speak.

Isabella Valentine is the person you're thinking of. Sadly, most of her most ridiculously ham-handed "brainwashing" stuff has gone the way of the dodo, but she's still around, peddling the binaural ~hypnoslavery~ bullshit.

Coincidentally, I found a Livejournal post (http://stayfrostyu.livejournal.com/16103.html) accusing her of being "immoral" and causing "long term psychological damage" yesterday.

This episode reminded me of the kids in High School who swore they got high smoking bananas peels once. Or that the candle-shaped mushrooms sold at the New Age store at the mall totally contained real pot! And you could get high from burning them! Pretty much any teenager who were somehow too stupid to figure out how to get high from huffing fumes.

fun fact I once talked with a comic artist who has dyslexia and did a comic about her issues with it as a child and the abuse she faced within the special education system, and she said someone at her school who was NOT in the special ed program tried to get high by smoking a hemp bracelet WITH the fimo beads on it, and it still made her furious to this day that that asshole got to be considered more "normal" than her and didn't get be forced into the special ed program where she learned nothing and was taught she was worthless just because she had trouble telling certain letters apart from other ones.

One time I thought that the white fuzzy seeds that hung off the creosote trees were drugs, and that you could grind them up and get hiiiiigh.

Well, you can't. Unless you consider the very refreshing and clean smell of the Southwestern desert after a rainstorm to be a drug.
