I didn't know it was still a thing on either side of the Atlantic.

I think the reason nerd weddings piss me off so much is because marriage is a coming-of-age ritual (one I’m becoming increasingly bitter about not having experienced at age 36) and if you’re going to use it as an opportunity to celebrate your childish pursuits (in exactly the same way as every other childish person) instead of being mature for one fuckin’ day of your life, you might as well just hold it in a fuckin’ playpen.
(Searches offbeatbride.com for “playpen.” Finds no results. Finds several results for “ball pit.” Shakes fist at heavens.)

Sherman and Tank's Tag Suggestions Wedding: "annoying", "pagans", "pop culture", "x meets y and it bites", "your life is uniquely meaningless", "zombies"

I'm going to have a china mieville wedding, my fiancee will have a bug mask on and right before the honeymoon I'll give her brain damage. the police will raid it.

This is a good episode

Futurist is a job title that existed about 100 years ago, so I guess it fits with the rest of the anachronistic shit in those weddings

I just figured he was secretly Umberto Boccioni.

I've got nerdy friends. I was just at a wedding where the reception was Star Trek themed. It was a cute little thing with custom cocktails and a fun photobooth and shit like that. We had a nice time and everyone got 'oh, cute, they wanted to use their love of Star Trek to make this a more unique thing' nice and clear. They also had a normal ass wedding and didn't spend twenty minutes speaking in Klingon while 90% of the crowd just watched the clock. The balance does exist! You can like something without making it literally all you are as a person, nerds!
-
My friends had a mostly normal wedding, with the only nerd thing being a giant 20 sided die made of pvr foam. Instead of clinking glasses to get the couple to kiss, you had to roll. 20 the couple would kiss, critical fail you had to kiss someone.
-
My brother had a typical wedding. He and his wife are into pop culture nerdy stuff (Harry Potter, LotR, Buffy et al). The only "nerd cred" thing they did was play the celebration march from the end of Star Wars for their entrance into the reception.
An entire wedding based on pop culture would be like reading an Ernest Cline book. Awful and self serving.
-
I was thinking to myself that I kind of want to see an ultranerd wedding where it's not Firefly or Doctor Who but, like, "We made our entire wedding Gitaroo Man themed, and the reception was based off of Nights into Dreams."
Then the Star Wars EU wedding came up and ehhhhhhhh

That brings up the question of there was a Plutonic ideal of the most cringe inducing turbo nerd wedding, what would it be? If money, time, and dignity were no object.
A Steampunk wedding on an actual zepplin? A Final Fantasy VI wedding where the ceremony is the entire opera?

A Final Fantasy VI wedding where the ceremony is the entire opera?
Sanguinary Novel, November 19, 2017, 11:30:41 pm
The opera and the gameplay sequence that takes place around it, reimagined as a comedic play-within-a-play. (Written by a couple that are both comedy writers!)

David Gonterman finally marrying his Internet girlfriend in a re-enactment of his fanfiction about their OCs' wedding, with everyone including the guests dressed in full Mobian fursuits.
The DJ for the dance is Ulillillia, with his full library of tapes of the Aquatic Ruin Zone theme played at all your favorite speeds.

There was a GIS specialist in the last Offbeat Bride episode, too.
I work in GIS now, and I have to say, I'm not surprised. People who are into GIS enough to actually list that as such about them seem to be uniquely nerdy enough to be into making their wedding something like this, and yet milquetoast enough that their offerings in it will be few and/or overpowered.

The first offbeatbride episode is one of the ones I skip when I re-listen to old episodes because I find the people so obnoxious and unpleasant. I have listened to the ballbusting, adult baby, and both F-List episodes so much I can quote portions of them.

Woah, that's crazy to me. The first offbeat bride episode would probably make my top 15. What is it that bugs you so much about these people?
-
It’s full on Cringe, there’s very little Shock, Weird or Narrative compared to the usual episode. That can be hard to deal with.
-
I don't know how well it shows in this episode, but the wedding episodes are the only ones I've been in where I get genuinely pissed off. It is a rare and enjoyable experience to actually get as upset with the material as everyone else for once.

Frank West: Hates weddings, loves cum
-
The wedding people all sound like god damn nerds, but at least they aren't tricking people into satisfying their fetishes, or destroying their property, or scamming them out of money in exchange for funny hats or enchanted stones or whatever.
And that one couple did take the "weddings are getting weird" grandma gracefully instead of post on r/weddings with "MY GRANDMA IS A BITCH BECAUSE SHE HATES STAR TREK"
(And you know r/weddings or whatever they call it is very much like Offbeat Bride except worse in every possible way.)
-
Credit where credit is due: the costumes for the Mass Effect wedding looked great, for something other than a wedding.

I Liked That Joke, November 20, 2017, 10:21:23 pm
Yeah, what Girlkisser420 said, it's cringe combined with it being inflicted on other people. I haven't listened to the episode in a couple years, so I'll give it another shot. My mood at the time can change what kind of comedy I can get into at the moment.
-
I'm surprised that searching for certain niche yet popular things come up with zero results.
Well, not surprised, really, more like "duh these are lonely nerds of courses there aren't any search results."
It's me, I'm the lonely nerd.

As someone who likes cosplay and going to anime conventions, I know a painful amount of people who want weddings just like this. Someone I went to high school with announced her wedding with My Little Pony macros while her groom was dressed up as Link. I know someone who officiates weddings while dressed as a Jedi. There's a cosplay prom in my area and every time I see pictures from it I just feel ridiculously embarrassed. And since they don't seem to be embarrassed at all... I just feel embarrassed for them. :(

Oh, you mean the anglicans????

I love ridiculously nerdy shit but some of my friends don't, and I'd want them to enjoy the day as much as I would. I feel kind of bad, because I'm sure there's always a fair few people sitting there wondering what the hell is going on.
-
Nerd shit is a lot like spice. A reasonable amount can make a party unique and fun while still being tasteful, but just piling globs and globs of it wherever you can will likely make everybody in attendance sick.
The fact that you have actually considered that some of your friends don't like Knight Rider and Baywatch as much as you do is a good sign that your wedding would be much better than these.

I just now realized we read that Pagan Pokemon wedding on Extra Credit's Offbeat Bride episode.
-
We recorded this episode a few days before you put that one out, IIRC. Then I realized we'd overlapped and felt mildly bad.
-
It was inevitable that we'd both end up reading the same content at some point.
-
My main problem with these for me is the lack of a coherent theme.
Like, if you chose ONE series or movie, or one coherent idea at least, and everyone knew it was happening going in I'm less liable to be annoyed than these weddings where they just mash up all the nerd shit they like.
-

Sherman Tank's Sherman Tank Shirt, November 25, 2017, 08:41:29 pm
when i started re-exploring old places like Sissykiss omegaverse and offbeat bride i had to go back through everything and be like "DID THIS ALREADY GET DONE?" Offbeat bride was actually one of the harder ones to ensure no overlap.
either way these are all some of my favorite subjects. and the pagan Pokemon wedding was. special. EMPATHY EXPERT. i think my guess was Tarot Card Reader.
oh i also looked up Homestuck, didn't find anything and was a little disappointed.
eta: wait, I think Northern Exposure came up in ours too. weird!

I just relistened to this, and my take away is...
Lemon, don't watch or read "Ready Player One".
You have kids, they deserve a dad who's alive.
-
Lemon, read ready player one and do a thread about it
-
What Lemon could do is read Ready Player One and get so upset about it he makes a podcast specifically to complain about it, then pivot it into talking about other bad books, with a rotating panel of co-hosts that eventually becomes just one regular co-host that's a good friend of his.

That idea will never work.

Yeah, lemon's too busy watching that television he owns.

What's great is that I know of at least two podcasts this describes. The book is just that bad.

The founder of Offbeat Bride got divorced and her self-care regimen was to fly to San Francisco to hire a dominatrix, (https://www.thestranger.com/features/2020/01/29/42684264/love-hurts) so I can only imagine what the next Offbeat site will look like.

Stallings doesn't want to get into the details of what she and the domme did together (although if you are truly curious, she wrote a book about it called Pros Before Bros that costs $200 and is available at Ada's Technical Books).
-
The experience was so positive that she thinks it could be helpful for other people, especially women, going through breakups or divorce. "I fully believe women would be better off paying other women to do this work with them rather than trying to do it with random dudes who are just trying to get fucked."
"Working out some really heavy personal shit? Hire a BDSM sex worker to be your fuck-therapist! Sex workers love doing emotional labor for their clients, and this absolutely will not get weird!"

You can tell it's a really special occasion for the groom because he wore his least dingy generic white t-shirt for the engagement shoot.

The pictures of them in the downtown park (?) afterward honestly look so much better than the FHQ pics.
-
To be fair, if they had taken pictures at the local garbage dump, it also would have looked better than the FHQ pics.
