Title: Best Episode to Start With
Post by: Wrought on May 18, 2018, 09:23:17 am
This might be kind of a weird post to make after I've paid for a ballp.it account and I've listened to hundreds of hours of the podcast, but what is the actual best episode to start with? What do you recommend others when they ask this? I always recommend:

The newest one, if it's not too niche or off-putting (279 is one i'd recommend, I wouldn't recommend furoticon though cause it's just so weird and a lot of it is card game rules)
61: Any Cling You Want (You Got It) (there's a good reason why this is the most iconic and famous episode)
89: Angry Angry Hippos (my personal favourite, just because of how consistently fantastic the fat snaps are)

What about you guys? What would/do you recommend to new listeners?

One of my absolute favorite episodes is still #173 - Sins of the Djinn - it's absurd enough to be funny, and a really gentle introduction to just how deep the crazy well can go. #201 -  Funding the Infowar is also a really top notch episode, and also serves as a great way to find out if your friend is a piece of shit. Other than that, any of the recipe episodes are a really safe bet as well.

Edit: Oh shit, one more - #138 - The Sound Quality is Inaudible

I think the ones with a wide selection of a lot of dumb stuff are the best to start off with, so stuff like Blurtit (https://thefpl.us/episode/131) or Spells of Magic (https://thefpl.us/episode/96) or good ol Yahoo Answers (https://thefpl.us/episode/197).

Debate.org for me.  It runs such a wide gamut.

If the friend is enough of a nerd to get all the impossibly nerdy jokes, r/INTJ.

The Wikihow Episodes are good choices for starter eps. They're ridiculous and not too graphic when it comes to fetishes. Well, aside from the courtesy pee article, but that's clean compared to more advanced episodes such as the mpreg ep.

Episode 58: I Can't Believe It's Entirely Butter! is a pretty safe place to start.

Not everyone can handle the hardcore stuff immediately. Sometimes you have to lube up their brains. With butter.

I like sending people either Myer's Frigs or THE WIZARD FORUMS to start off with. I usually like Myer's Frigs since it has a nice introduction by Lemon about how the podcast isn't intended to be mean-spirited, and is fairly not-gross by FPlus standards. WIZARD FORUMS is good if you just want to plunge people into the deep end right away, without a lot of build up or pattering.

deep end is f-list, dick bugs, or cum & food related topics

Fair, but I think WIZARD FORUMS has small tidbits of all of those in trace amounts. It's more like dipping a baby head-first into the deep end for a few seconds.

As mentioned here already, episode 138, audiophile bullshit, is my go to, the episode is great, but I think most people can laugh at people trying to sell stikers that make your audio system sound good, and then you get to Patrick82, who is the best

I'll thank you very much to keep your lies and slander to yourself. The F Plus has a rotating cast of vocal talent that can mimic every dialect in the UK.

I recently re-listened to #194, Reddit Legal Advice, and I think that could be a great starter episode. Not only is it a really funny episode in general, the subject matter is weird in a way I don't think would be confusing to someone who's not already Very Online. In addition, there are only four readers in this one, so it might be a little more approachable, and the workjerk27 story feels like it'd be a solid litmus test to see if someone would enjoy the grosser stuff that comes up in the podcast or just get too grossed out.

Agreed for all the reasons listed above, and also because of Adam's delivery of "someone thinks they live in an anime!"

I'm going to toss episode 96 -- HOCUS BOGUS! -- into the mix, because it's a fairly lighthearted romp through a wide variety of inherently silly stuff, and it's fairly accessible with a low incidence of in-jokes (with just the right sprinkling of them for listeners to catch later on a re-listen x3). It's also not terribly gross.

Because it covers a wide variety of topics within the broader scope of silly spells of magick, you can use what they liked best as a jumping-off point for suggesting future episodes.

Plus, it introduces more people to THE KILLING SPELLLLLLLLL, which is a wonderful thing. :B

Incidentally, I've been wondering for some time if there's merit to the idea of putting out some sort of "best of" episode? There's a lot of ground to cover, and people should know right away to never fuck the car hot.

Lemon, May 30, 2018, 11:46:35 pm

I think there's merit in that idea. It could be something like Episode(s) 200 except with the ridiculists explaining why they like a particular reading so much.

Might be a good idea for Episode 300 if you don't have a plan for it already.

Can I turn Sherman into Tank?, May 31, 2018, 12:19:23 am

In my opinion a best-of episode works better if it's just a tightly-edited compilation of highlights, one after another. Interjections by the ridiculists probably wouldn't add much. I always thought relistenability has been one of the podcast's strengths.

What about something in the middle? I don't think straight jumps between segments would work well, because it seems like it would be jarring to switch subjects so quickly. Maybe just short intermissions acting as preambles to the next clip, explaining the episode it came from and giving a bit of context?

I don't think that another clip show has a chance of improving on Episode 200.  What I'd love is another anything-goes cornucopia like 100 was.  Not necessarily PoE-era "classic Internet" again, but something with everyone bringing in their own special favorite reading and making a really friggin' big F+ episode together.  Maybe everyone could submit a reading and randomly draw someone else's to read?  That would be a lot of fun.

My rough idea for episode 300 that I was going to push on Lemon is that we should do f plus origins: stories that actually happened to you to get you into this crazy, but idk if everyone has fun stories they would like to share.

That's really weird. I mean it definitely is the most entry level content considering it's just bad writing and a weird personality without any of the ambient internet-weird going on (unless you count food bloggers as internet-weird, I consider them too tame to qualify) but it's not really representative of the general content. Maybe I just can't see it because I've never been normal and my jumping off point was someone telling me "hey go listen to this podcast they did an episode about roy orbison getting wrapped in clingfilm" and just went "oh yeah cool that sounds good"

I've also only ever shared it with an older sibling, but it was after I introduced him to Lou Reads (forget the episode) and my recommendation was 241: DRUGS! because I really feel like the rollerskating guy is one of the funniest things to ever happen in this podcast.

I think it's best to avoid the sexual ones at first unless they're 'warmed up' on the subject.

Some good starters would be the ice chewers or fine water episodes.

Pyradyne (Aquire The Spiritual Energy Of A Tiny Dead Pharoah), audiophiles or real vampires are good for someone into pseudoscience/general bullshit.

A good fetish episode starter is She Thinks My Sex Are Spexy. It's a good intro to weird fetishes without being too gross or explicit.

If you're looking to scare someone away, adult babies or bugs are your way to go.

Angry Angry Hippos (and, to an extent, the unused thin privilege doc) are both amazing in a very approachable way in that no matter who you are or what your life is like you can agree that it's hilarious that all people who weigh five hundred pounds want to do is go zip lining, hang gliding, horseback riding, and hot air ballooning and they're all incredibly frustrated that they can't and none of them can understand why they can't

It can be difficult to choose given that different people will be turned off by different things, but I've found a few different good starting points:

Ignorance of The Law is my Excuse, Episode #64. For me, this has been one of the best general-purpose episodes to start people off with, it covers a wide variety of F-plus themes, it's relatively clean, it features of one Lemon's best voices that debuts just four episodes earlier in Any Cling, and it's just extremely accessible.

The same goes for Today's Progress was Yesterday's Form Field because it too has that variety and also gives us the first Bozarth.

and

The remainder of my Time Will be a Series of Grunts also due to its wide variety and surprisingly varied level of pop-culture reference points.

For people that want things more consistently on-topic, Any Cling is weird enough to fascinate just about anybody, and if you don't mind starting at a cut, the Garfield Fan Fiction one is incredible in the same way, no offense to Van Hozel.

I think my first one was the Ice Chewer episode, which could have been the most recent one when I found out about the podcast.
