I would like to implant the following tags into this episode's page:

"ask dr. laszlo", "fantasies", "furries", "insanity", "jargon", "misguided diy", "morons", "modwompers", "nerds", "not a fetish?", "penis modification projects", "questionable problem-solving", "science fiction is now science fact", "there are better ways to kill yourself", "witness the death of shame and reason"

I enjoyed the Plaxico Burress joke but only because I used to work with his wife at a law firm. I don't watch football either.

Hoo boy: this is the closest an episode has brought me to barfing. Not even the bug fuckers came this close. Thanks?

(Still not as gross as Lou's recent episode where he read from the Self Suck Forums though. The "frozen cum egg" story will haunt my gag reflex for the rest of my life.)

The main thing that keeps me from finding this completely awful is that at least they're mostly causing harm to themselves and not victimizing other people.

Also, I'm constantly impressed by what people do and don't do when it comes to their bodies, they'll waste hundreds of hours making a skin pocket, but they won't spend an hour reading about biology or chemistry or anything

I feel bad for every person who's undergone surgery where something like a pacemaker or a skull plate went inside them who's had to interact with these kinds of people. It must be like talking to that one amputee fetishist from episode 100

One bit of backstory to the creation of this doc was that we discovered it during the postgame of a session of Eclipse Phase, an RPG about transhumanist horror and science fiction. And then we discovered real transhumanist horror.

Speaking as someone who thinks that Transhumanism and body modification stuff is cool, this is about as dumb as wishing you were superman and jumping off of a building to see if you can fly. I'd be willing to have some mad scientist implant bleeding edge tech into my body. However the notion that these people are at all advancing the tech or implementing it in a meaningful way is absurd.

When the headline "FLORIDA MAN'S DICK FALLS OFF DUE HOMEMADE MOTOR IMPLANT" hits the presses it's only going to cause a setback for real scientists. That could be bad considering the majority of this tech is for amputees people suffering from serious diseases.

That's sort of strikes at the heart of it though. Bio tech isn't really for these people, it isn't for the silicon valley richer than god dip shits either, it's for people with debilitating ailments and disabilities.

Anyway I do agree with the one poster and have always dreamed of having cyborg arms. Then again, who hasn't?

Well it's just like the people who read too much harry potter and became "real life witches" who put leaves in a bowl with some salt and chant "skunk skunk spray me now" until the universe solves their problems, only they played too much deus ex, missed all the messages about information control and decided the game was a call to arms for people who wanted to graft fidget spinners into the palms on their hands

something that really bothers me about the biohacking community is the cavalier attitude to which people seem to treat the idea of an "upgrade". We still have a limited understanding of phantom limb pain, but that doesn't stop these white-dreadlocs types from wishing they could just swap out limbs and accessories like clothing, nerve damage be damned. So while the lack of research and general dumb shit going on in the ep is stomach-turning, it's been selected for from the top down. I love the idea of biohacking and self autonomy, but this shit is just too fucking dumb to countenance, even for the sympathetic.

Jackal Flapnasty hits the nail on the head - the established tech in this sphere is for people with disabilities. Oscar Pistorius' blade legs were better suited for competitive running than my 'stock' ones, and that's pretty cool to me in a way a magnet implant just isn't.

I think this might be the first episode I can't bring my self to listen to. Just the concept alone of having stuff under your skin, possibly moving skeeves me right the fuck out. Idiots going into detail it about might kill my soul enough that I'd have to remove the "Delight" from my name.

Are there any of these idiots who want to actually sever a limb to get something better replaced?

Was the lady who wanted to be a real DBE amputee who wears twin body-powered prostheses with matching Dorrance #5X stainless steel hooks, a biohacker?

Yes to both. It's something quite a few people in this sphere dream about, but they all explain away not having done it by saying "the technology isn't there yet", with almost no lip service to the issues faced by amputees and the disabled in society. It's a kind of dumb selfish techno-utopianism with little grounding in the real world imo.

The biohack that I think is most interesting of the ones straddling the line between dumb star trek shit and dumb tech bro shit is Scottish biohacker Lepht Anonym's Southpaw implant (http://privacy-pc.com/articles/cybernetics-for-the-masses-5-the-southpaw-project.html), a device that is installed behind the knee and which uses haptic feedback to create an innate sense of magnetic North, like carrier pigeons have. Users report getting lost less frequently, but I don't think that's worth installing a PCB into the space opposite my kneecap, especially since there's also a version that you can wear as an ankle bracelet, no DIY surgery required, which I also think is dumb.

That's one of the intrinsic problems in near future sci-fi. People are generally not very likely to drill into their head to surf the net a-la Neuromancer. They're much more likely to wait for a safer HTC Vive like solution. Of course the Vive is a whole lot less cool from a dystopian fiction perspective. It's a realism vs style balance that sci-fi has to strike.

Although the fact that there are some idiots out there that will insist upon grafting a VR headset, no matter what Victor says, to the forehead warms my heart.

Interestingly, someone made a cryptocurrency out of Folding@Home and it quickly rose to the top of the list of contributors.

One of the specific reasons to get your tongue split is so that you can learn which of your friends disapprove of split tongues and cut them out of your life.  That's really something right there.

also "one that can easily segway into describing yourself"??  Jesus, dude.

I’ve mostly weeded out all of my overly religious and judgemental friends with other lifestyle choices I’ve made (can someone say, “rat owning polyamorous swinger”?), but for folks that have no idea how supposed “friends” may act? Rock out your new radar and let’s get to re-organizing your social circle. ;-)

Yeah, it sounds like this person's problem is definitely the other people in their life.
