Without listening to the episode, I can only assume this is now the easiest way to snag a pickup truck down to the fishing hole for some good ol' catfish noodling.

Why isn't every episode tagged with "the internet isn't helping" and "witness the death of shame and reason"?

Also, I thought the level of annoying twatishness was going to peak with the pastafarian... oh boy. Oh boy oh boy.

Dear ballp.it/legaladvice, if I want to sue Lemon because this episode gave me a rage-induced aneurysm, how much money could I get?

HOOOLy shit that guy who wants to get full custody of his child to save on child support. Just, fuck. Goddamnit.

I was going to actually calculate how much time ahead of the douchebag's car passing the crosswalk you have to throw the baseball up in the air for it to shatter the car's windshield, but then I decided I have better things to do, e.g. anything.

Sadly, the episode missed my personal favourite /r/legaladvice idiot, the kid who got a chequebook and immediately wrote "souvenir" cheques to all his friends, who then cashed them even though he told them not to. Now his parents are out the $1000 they put in the account, plus fees, and they might not even pay for his holidays! Check through his user history.

https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/3cd6oj/im_in_highschool_and_money_was_stolen_from_my/

As for /r/legaladvice, it seems to be 50% idiots and 50% people who want to know if they have a case against the dodgy landlord who's nicking their stuff and that sort of thing.

Since every time reddit gets mentioned, you ask what it's actually useful for... I use it for several things. First of all, it is good for dumb pictures, and sometimes I like dumb pictures. There are subreddits for taking the best bits of tumblr and for showcasing the idiots who use reddit itself, among other things, which can be fun. It's also good outside the larger more general subreddits. I've met some good and helpful people through the mental health subreddits, even if some of the stuff I've said there probably belongs in it's own episode. It's also pretty good for question and answer stuff, the vast majority of my reddit posts now are in weekly new player question threads for guild wars 2, where I can tell people what to buy with their e-bux or where to find good character builds. Plus, reddit is good crowdsourcing for information. The blackhawks subreddit keeps me on top of everything going on so I don't have to trawl through half a dozen different twitter accounts and news pages. Frankly I find it easier to look for scores and schedules and things there as well.

It's maybe not ideal, but I can read and talk about all that on one website with one account without ever having to see /r/legaladvice or /r/changemyview or whatever other shit is around.

I like how that scumbag knew just the right interval to up the ante on his own shittiness every time. He'd go a few sentences and then introduce wanting to deny his wife child support. Then after a few more sentences he revealed he'd fob the kid off on his mom. Then a few more sentences he mentioned timing his checking withdrawal to steal his wife's paycheck and then close the account. I thought, for a moment, he was going to ask if he'd be liable for killing her and dissolving the body since he was in college and she had a job.

That was always his reasoning, too: "I have classes and she makes plenty of money, so I'm exempt from negative consequences while she's got all of this coming, right?"

Apparently college is just one big Get Out of Responsibility Free card.

Yea I have a buddy who's a divorce lawyer and while I wanted to at first say 'this is clearly a troll' then I asked him about it and he was all 'yea no that sounds legit, the world is a trash fire and I pray for death' and then he unhinged his jaw and just screamed for twenty minutes.

Ok maybe that last couple bits was exaggerated, but yea according to him while obviously the internet is a throne of lies, even if he was trolling that dude totally syncs up with other very real shitbags that pull shit like that. Apparently 'if I file for custody first I win right' is like, a super common idea people have.

I'll crosspost my reply from SA:

"I heard my kids were sad while I was gone during training... Special Forces training."

You have to be at least E-4 before you can go out for Special Forces selection. If you pass selection, THEN you start training. In other words, you can't start Special Forces training eight months in.

"And so I asked my commanding officer if I could go home. And he said that I was doing real good and had done six years' worth of Army stuff in eight months so I could go home early."

More realistic: "And so I asked my commanding officer if I could go home. He laughed in my face for so long that I missed chow."

"Um, well, they don't keep [discharge records] for the Special Forces guys. Because it's secret."

HAHAHA WRONG AGAIN YOU GODDAMN LIAR

"And I lost all my medals and my papers and stuff in a boating accident."

And this is just... hm. Well, yeah, okay, that actually does happen all the time.

Yeah, something I've noticed is every time you guys do a reddit episode, you act as if the people you're reading are representative of the whole of reddit. It's a very big site, there's a huge diversity of people there. Heck, the people you read in this episode aren't really a good representation of /r/legaladvice.

Reddit's got a similar, yet worse, problem to Tumblr. Sure, the userbase of Tumblr isn't exclusively teenage girl hemiplatonic fractoromantic francosexuals who are also otherkin furries who exclusively watch Steven Universe and Sherlock. But those people are both very talkative and hilarious, so they're the ones we talk about. Similarly, not all Reddit users are neckbeardy shitstains, but the guys most openly proud of being Reddit users are.

The thing that makes Reddit worse is that it seems like the people running it are those kinds of people too, given how much they shirk human decency, and probably actual laws, to let them continue being shitty people and having their shitty subreddits. The actions of Reddit's actual team suggest them to be much the same as the people we characterize their userbase as, whereas the people who run Tumblr don't seem much like their stereotypical members.

It was a very slow process involving quite an amount of major Reddit employees speaking out in defense of blatantly racist and hateful subreddits. The fact they took so long to do something about stuff that flagrant speaks a lot louder than the fact that they, eventually, started shutting them down.

There's the very surface which is links to news articles and silly pictures, then there's the less popular commenty bits on those popular sections which are just hives of racism and shittyness. Then there's the niche-but-popular stuff like specific subreddits for hobbies or something which are generally pretty good because it's basically just talking about your video games or sports teams the same way most people do. Then there's more bad stuff when you get down to the weird shit which is too fringe to have much traction outside of crazy broken people.

People don't fire up a Reddit/Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook F+ episode to hear us read even-keeled, well-spelled posts from sane and rational Reddit/Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook users. If you click Play on an F+ episode thinking "I'm sure this will be a balanced and reasonably fair look at the cross-section of the site's userbase as a whole, thereby enriching the listeners' appreciation for what the site can offer," you'll have to suppress the urge to write a they're-not-all-like-that post in nearly every episode thread on here.

Edit to add: Yeah, Portaxx's disclaimer in the brony episode sums it up. The de facto ambassadors for any online community are gonna be the loudest people, the people who put themselves out there the most. Unfortunately for a lot of these sites, their worst people are also usually their loudest. Goes hand in hand.

It's back to the old problem I've had with the F Plus then, which is generalisations. It happened with the pronouns thing (wanting different pronouns is bad, right?) too. All crowdfunding is bad.

Every time the podcast strays from mocking the actual shit you're reading to mocking everyone who happens to share the same website or related hobbies or something, it sours the fun and usually veers away from the terrible things read with enthusiasm thing you've got going. When the readers end up being the ones who don't really know what they're talking about and have the wrong idea about things, something's up.

Neither of those things were said at any point. Way to freely generalize things while decrying generalizations.

It's easy to get the wrong read of the readers' opinions of websites because all you're hearing is an hour of the best jokes they made about a website every couple weeks.  Sometimes it can come off more antagonistic than they really are just because it's such a small little snippet.  But Boots uses Reddit, as he said at the end of this episode.  Portaxx has been part of a Kickstarter. (I think?)  They can make fun of the bad aspects of a site and still use it.

EYE OF ZA, November 27, 2015, 12:57:53 pm

Pretty much. I know folks have given me hell by saying I hate Kickstarter and especially Patreon, but that would literally make no sense since both of those sites provide services that I've been advocating for years. I like the idea of a site where people can directly support a project beforehand, and I like the idea of artists being able to make a living (or even partial living) off of doing what they love. These are both good things. If someone wants to make a short film series and folks want to see it, why not let the people fund it themselves? Likewise if someone just wants to make a ton of Youtube videos and people like the content, why not give them a chance to support it?

In fact I'm almost positive I say something to that effect in the Patreon episode, and people still think I hate artists making money off their art.

I think part of this and the whole "now wait a minute, not everyone in this given subculture/forum/site is like that!" comes from how we will usually say something like "of course this kind of awful shit is on this website" at one point or another in an episode. I get where people are coming from, because at face value it really does sound like we just blanketly hate every website ever.

Rather, the "ugh [WEBSITE]" gagging refers more to how specific sites each have very distinct flavors of terrible to them. Reddit has the MRAs, DeviantArt has the ugly MS Paint fanart, Kickstarter has the idiots who want funding before they want to even plan their project, and so on. None of these sites are universally awful, but Patreon Horrible is notably different from AllRecipes Horrible. So when we say "yep, that's this site all right! BARF" then that's what we're talking about.

Really the only 100% perfect website out there is Spells of Magic, is what I'm trying to say.

I never got the whole #notallreddit thing, it always comes up whenever anyone criticizes Reddit but unlike, say, 4chan, Reddit literally has a content duration program built into. You can just go to Reddit, click things, and see that they constantly upvote bigoted ass shit or shit that didn't happen that paints the evil women as villains or bullshit 'free speech means you can never stop doing anything or the SJWs win' stuff. These are opinions that get large amounts of support from the Reddit userbase, I don't know what other standards exist that can be used to say 'yea this place sucks real bad'.
Title: 194: r/ecuseyourself
Post by: EYE OF ZA on November 28, 2015, 01:57:50 pm
It's still just a portion of the userbase--and while it's a big portion, Reddit, to an even greater extent than 4chan, has a community fragmentation.  Its size means that it's good for finding people in niche interest groups, because those are often entirely separate from the mens rightsers and whatever.  While 4chan does have a somewhat consistent identity between boards, even if the boards themselves are insular in their own ways, Reddit's user-created boards means that there are subreddits the neckbeardy mens rights types are never going to see.

Well yea obviously Reddit isn't a magic hivemind, but when the face of your site, as decided by the population of your site, constantly wants us to know how mad they are at minorities and their moms, maybe that's a bigger thing than just cherrypicking.

I saw someone refer to the issue of extremism/hostility on social platforms as a result of the platform itself rather than the users. For example, the profound absence of fact checking and proliferation of only the most critical views on tumblr being a natural result of a format that doesn't have linear threads etc.  #notalltumblr is the kind of extreme personality we like to laugh at, but they thrive on tumblr because it is impossible to have actual nuanced discussion there. #notallreddit is woman-hating white supremacists, but reddit is uniquely an enormous platform that allows people of nearly any mindset to interact with barely any moderation, and therefore that's where those people ended up, because they cannot congregate at that scale anywhere else.

Prank went wrong and my cousin was arrested (https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/44e14x/prank_went_wrong_and_my_cousin_was_arrested/) (Florida)

My cousin and me both go to the same college. With some of our friends we sometimes get together on campus and play jokes or pranks on people on campus that we sometimes put on YouTube. It's always small, harmless stuff.

My cousin had the idea that we should go downtown and jump into random back seats of cars that we find unlocked and pretend we think the people were Uber drivers. It went wrong though.

That nighy my cousin jumped into this girls car and started telling her to drive and hurry up because he was late. The girl was yelling at him but then she accelerated the car into traffic and sped up. She hit a mailbox and a cop saw and she got out and was screaming that some guy jumped in her car and tried to hijack her. My cousin gor arrested at gunpoint.

We all tried to explain to the cops at the station but they thought we were just trying to cover for him and they kicked us out because we have never done something like this, our normal stuff is different and on campus. His parents are working on getting him a lawyer I think but he has to stay in jail until he goes to court.

We also found out that the girl goes to our school but we didn't know that and she said someone was stalking her or being creepy on campus to her. My cousin doesn't know her and this was just an accident and a prank gone wrong. They are blaming him for the crash. He has never been on trouble before except that he got caught with weed once and is on probation. What is the worst that could happen to him from this?

In a minor victory for the human species, even Reddit considers these guys to be cementheads:

"It's just a prank, bro!" is not a legal defense.
There's over 1 million people licensed in Florida to carry a concealed weapon. Your cousin is incredibly lucky he's still alive.
Well, that was awfully dumb of you, wasn't it?
For his next prank, he should run into a jail cell, lock the door behind him, and then sit there for one to three years.
Carjacking is a felony in the first degree. It would appear to be punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The school can also expel him, and probably the rest of you while they're at it.
