Title: Words That Make Noises You Hate?
Post by: memorylikeasieve on April 19, 2015, 07:04:06 am
I'm always interested to know what kind of words people can't stand, just based on the sound.  Just a word that makes a noise that grates on your ears.  I mean, there's the famous example of 'moist,' but what else is nails on a blackboard to folks?

Mine include the abovementioned 'moist,' as well as, for some reason, 'meal,' anything with the syllable '-am-' pronounced with a short 'a', the word 'rear,' 'aunt' prounounced like the insect, and 'envelope' pronounced with an 'ahn' in the first syllable instead of 'en.'

The word I dislike the sound of the most is the Hebrew word for clitoris "dagdegan" (דגדגן), which is perhaps on the level of "pee-pee" when it comes to bad names for genitals.

It doesn't help that itcomes from the word for tickling "digdug" (yes, really), so if you literally interpret "dagdegan", it just means "tickler".

Pretty much any time anyone actually uses Internet terms in real-life conversation it makes me die a little inside..  Especially "epic" and "feels," both of which are bad enough when you type them as it is.

EDIT: That's not really because of the sound though.

I don't like saying "juice" it sounds gross. "Juices" is even worse which I guess is fitting because juice is fine to drink but I can't imagine a scenario where someone says "hey I drank the juices" and your response isn't "EW, WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT"

Least favorite sounding word though would probably have to be "drawer". That weird half-D half-J sound, no thanks.

Mine is oddly specific and kinda nerdy - it's when people pronounce greek-originated words and names phonetically. For example "Charon" (Pluto's moon) being pronounced "Sharon" or "Ch-arron" rather than "Kharon".

I have a special grudge against the Scottish Gaelic word "fliuch," meaning "wet." As in, "tha i fliuch an-diugh," "it's wet (outside) today."

Seems like a simple enough word, right? How do you reckon it's pronounced? (If you're at all familiar with Gaelic languages, you know this is a trap. :B)

It's not "flee-ooch," since that I is one of those extra silent vowels that makes Gaelic a pain in the butt to read sometimes. It's not "flooch," like "hootch" would sound if it had an "fl" at the beginning. It's also not "fluh(kh)," where (kh) stands for the Gaelic "ch" as in "och" or "ach," which is pronounced in the back of the throat. No, if it was ANY of those, I could pronounce it easily.

It's "floo(kh)."

UGH.

I feel like I'm listening to someone hock up mucus from their throat every time. And I cannot pronounce it. ^^;

It's not out of sheer "augh, Gaelic" either!  I can rattle off "tha mi ag iarraidh cupa tì gun bainne, mas e ur toil e" and other such phrases with absolutely no problems whatsoever. It's just.... fliuch. Ugh. Fliuch.
