Hiya gals and guys too if this is your thing! I'm resurrecting the lady thread to brag about this awesome moisturizer I've been using. See, I've got a combination skin, and usually face creams leave my skin feeling oily and sticky and generally just not fun. BUT! Ever since I've started using Lumene Bright Now Vitamin C I can get a smooth, soft skin without that nasty oily feeling!*

Advertising talk aside though, this stuff is great and I recommend it for people who can't easy heavy moisturizing products.

*montrith wishes she was being paid for this message, but alas has so far not heard anything from Lumene.

This might be the thread for it, but, Montrith, I've seen on twitter and in ballp.it that you are a part of different organizations*. Do you mind telling which ones you are? I was always curious.

*This sounds kinda stalkerish, yikes

Well, since they're Finnish ones the names probably won't mean anything to you, but I do some volunteer work for Finnish Federation for Animal Welfare Associations (SEY). I'm also a member of an organization that represents the interests of academic women. We do stuff like promote education of women globally, teach Finnish to immigrant women and aim to increase equality both in governmental and private sector. I prefer not to say more details about that cause I'm actually a board member for one of the local branches and I don't really want to create a connection with that and ballpit (I love you guys, but I don't think my word would count for as much in important meetings if I was also known as the "person with the dickbugs"), but here's SEY's website if you want to know more about that.

I want to get out more this summer and enjoy the public parks and do some building drawings. Is there any good way to get people to stop talking to me?

In the same vein, is there a good, high power sunscreen that isn't super greasy, or is it just a matter of washing your face once getting back home?

You've probably already thought of this, but headphones usually help. Even if you're not listening to anything. If people still talk to you, you can just pretend you don't hear them

I like the Simple range. I have dry skin, so alot of products make my face feel like it's about to peel off when applied, but the Simple face wash is gentle enough on my face for me to use whenever I shower. Their moisturisers are also good

I think you'll do just fine wearing sunglasses and a hat. People don't usually approach total strangers unless there's a reason for doing so.

Also, how high power are we talking? I use factor 15, but then again, I like to cover up and and stay in the shade. Sunscreen can only do so much.
Title: Lady Thread 2: Girlectric Boogaloo
Post by: montrith on June 04, 2017, 01:56:06 pm
Also asking what factor you need? If I'm not gonna be in direct sunlight for long I just use the daycream I already talked about, since it has a SPF of 15 and isn't oily.

https://www.amazon.com/Lumene-Bright-Vitamin-Moisturizer-Fluid/dp/B004GHBEDK/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_194_tr_t_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3SHZ3SHFG86BMJ12F681

This one.

For facial scrubs and stuff I like Freeman cosmetics. They're not tested on animals and work pretty well in my opinion. I mostly use their masks (haven't really tried the scrubs) but I've got nothing to complain about those. What's your skin type? It would be easier to recommend a product with more details.

I'm probably overthinking it and should just wear a dang hat. This medication I'm on makes me redhead levels of sensitive to the sun, so now I'm all paranoid.

With a hat, sunglasses, headphones, and now blue hair, I'm hoping people instinctively avoid me.

If you are going to be in the sun for any period then use sunscreen. Not sure about where you are from but in Australia it is the leading cause of cancer and is not that hard to avoid. A hat and sunglasses really won't cut it in terms of preventing cancer.

Blue hair? Niiice! My hair was blue as well for a while, and I loved it, but it's hard to maintain without constantly redoing the roots. And the dye molecules never truly leave the hair, which I discovered the hard way when trying to dye my hair a different colour afterwards.

Hello, I'm whining about women's fashions!

Why doesn't anyone make fucking summer blouses/shirts with sleeves? All I want is a light fabric shirt with at least some sleeve in it. I've got vitiligo, which is especially prominent in my arms, which means I fucking need something between me and the sun to protect my "Absolutely will burn and not tan" skin. I guess I have to come to terms with being sweaty the whole summer, since I can't wear anything without at least a quarter sleeve.

Also today I saw a kickass Princess Leia T-shirt but they only had S sizes left, which made me very sad.

If you can fit China sizes, AliExpress has a lot of button up blouses with long sleeves. The clothing is a little thin and selection a touch strange, but cheap as hell.

Montrith, I've purchased my long sleeve summer flowy shirts from Helsinki's various Lindex and H&M mostly. I think Stockman and Sokos have a larger selection of the more classical shirts but I usually only buy from there on sales of something like 70%.
Also I've noticed many 2nd hand stores especially Fida's having a larger selection of long sleeved shirts even though they are usually very 80's-90's.
Edit: Spellcheck v2

Post by: montrith on June 10, 2017, 01:55:00 pm
Usually I avoid H&M because of a long series of purchases that were extremely crap, had buttons come off within days of purchase etc. Stockmann and Sokos might be a bit too expensive in my current financial situation, but if I can find a Lindex I'll take a look. I did manage to find one nice shirt from KappAhl, the last one in my size too!

Also while I'm flattered, I must inform everyone that Samus is actually much closer to my little sister in physique than me. Seriously, now that I think about it, she could pretty much play Samus in any movie without even needing much makeup or CGI.

I was going to post this in terrible D&D stories, but I figured the ladies in the thread might have advice. This dude keeps hitting on me at every session and it's the most uncomfortable thing and I could not make it any more apparent I'm not interested. Also I'm not used to this attention, I have no idea how to handle this.

We talked privately before, and he said that he's awkward and a little forward, and he didn't mean anything by it. And that he noticed I was uncomfortable at a fourth of July party, and "Do you hate me?"

So that's super uncomfortable, and I said I didn't hate him, and I'm just not used to anyone being interested. I didn't say exactly "I'm not interested, I just want to be friends", so I guess that's the next step?

Seriously, I'm completely dense as hell when it comes to flirting, so I only notice when it's pretty intense.

Wat do?

you rebuffed his advances and he continued to make them. Even if you're both awkward and bad at firting, that's a bad look.

I would advise you not to use words like 'just' when speaking to him. He doesn't care about your agency (and if he did, he'd stop hitting on you, because you have made clear to him and everyone else that it makes you uncomfortable), so tell him firmly and straightly something like 'Stop doing this. I dont want it, it makes me angry, and I will leave this D&D group the next time you do'. Any response from him that isn't 'okay, I hear you loud and clear' is insufficient.

The 'do you hate me?' thing is such typical sad nerd shit I can't feel anything but a little pity for the guy. He can't conceive of different levels of social familiarity, and it sounds like prime Geek Social Fallacy 2 (Friends Accept Me As I Am (http://www.plausiblydeniable.com/opinion/gsf.html)), which is a disease of the nerdy brain. Tell him that if he doesn't mean anything by it, it's got to stop, and if he's secretly in love with you that has to stop also.

You aren't flirting. You're being harrassed at a place you go to relax, and it's making the experience worse for you. If the GM isn't an even worse grognard, they will be on your side in this issue. Nerd Creep is 100% responsible for destabilizing the playgroup. My condolences, and good luck.

(PS: I, personally, will not play games with anyone I wouldn't also hang out with. It's a simple rule that's saved me some grief.)

Do IUDs hurt a lot? I had a friend who had it and said it was awful and got rid of it as soon as she could, but I'm kinda looking for alternative birth control. I had the implant for a while, but I kept getting so paranoid that it would break in my arm that I had it taken out again. It was really awesome that it pretty much took away my period, but the anxiety just wasn't worth it. I've been wondering if an IUD would be any better, because I really liked that it took away the PMS along with the period.

I haven't! If it's less hormones, does it effect the PMS at all? That's the biggest reason I'm wanting to go back to using birth control. My anti-depressants work wonders on my moods EXCEPT right before my period.

God that's true. My friend had the implant in for a while too, and it was hell for her, while it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I'm planning on bringing it up with my doctor next time I see her, but it helps to weigh my options by hearing other people's experiences. Like, I know they always have side effect lists, but it puts it more into perspective to get a variety of people's experiences.

Do you have a special reason to be against IUDs? Most of what I've heard from other people has been positive so I'm curious.

montrith, April 20, 2018, 02:19:16 pm

The IUD itself isn't the problem - it's supposed to be one of the most effective forms of birth control and lasts quite a long time. It's the insertion that is the problem.

TMI incoming, but the last pap smear I had was so painful that I was just openly weeping, and was in such a sorry state that a woman and her daughter came up to me in the waiting room and said they would say a prayer for me. On top of that, because of the bariatric surgery, I can't take NSAIDs anymore, so the more effective pain control meds are out of the question.

It's just easier for me to change out the medication that is interfering with the Implanon and move on with life.

Ouch. I can sympathize with that. It's not like I myself am a fan of someone inserting foreign objects into my vagina.

Despite guys on the internet trying to convince me otherwise.

Post by: Liatai on April 22, 2018, 05:12:49 am
On one hand, I'm so sorry to hear that... on the other, it's kind of an odd relief to know that I'm not the only one who finds pap smears SUPER painful. I have vaginismus, which is absolutely zero problem for me any other time. I'm an asexual virgin with no interest in changing that, so it's a complete non-issue. :B Until speculums are required.

I can usually manage insertion if they use the smallest ones, but as soon as it starts to open I get RIPPING pain shooting up from there through my trunk. It's like someone's trying to tear me apart from the vagina up. |D; Couldn't walk without pain for a full week afterward, and that was with NSAIDs, so, um...  I guess you're not missing too much on the pain relief front if your issue is the same... ^^; Best of luck.

Post by: montrith on April 22, 2018, 02:09:07 pm
Hold on, if you're an asexual virgin why are you having pap smears? My doctor told me specifically that since I wasn't sexually active there was no need for one. The  human papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted DNA virus, so if you want to be ABSOLUTELY sure nothing is wrong you can continue having it done, but in your case the risk is microscopically small. I'm assuming you're not middle aged either, so that shouldn't be a factor to have a pap smear either.
Title: Lady Thread 2: Girlectric Boogaloo
Post by: Macho Masc Sangy Savage on April 22, 2018, 02:29:51 pm
It's been the same for me - even though I wasn't sexually active ever, I still had to have pap smears. It's only once every three years, but they still do it. It's not only for HPV, but for cancer and pelvic exams. It suuuuuuuucks.

I'd also like to complain about there being so much pain associated with female sexuality, from before, start, to finish.
Title: Lady Thread 2: Girlectric Boogaloo
Post by: montrith on April 22, 2018, 05:40:48 pm
I've never gone to a pap smear. I'll probably go to the next one since I'm starting to enter my "can't be called young anymore" adult years, but I even for women my age I think the recommended time is still every 5 years or so.

See, though, Montrith, you live in a place with a decent medical system. I'm in the USA. :B

Sanguinary brought up all the relevant points. I mean, if we're being even more honest, my chance of HPV is less than microscopic because I've had the vaccination series. But it's treated as part of a normal pelvic exam at most places, and it suuuuuuuuuuucks.

Doesn't help that over half the time nurses and doctors give me an "I know you're bullshitting me" look when I tell them I'm a virgin at my age and have no interest in sex. |D; (I'm glad my PCP believes me at least. Still on the hunt for a gynecologist that believes me BEFORE they try to push the speculum in the first time.)

On the flip side, my feet are half a size bigger than average, and it makes it annoying when I go sales shopping. All the nice shoes on sale are in tiny or big sizes, not average because everyone else has bought them before me!

My shoes mostly consist of boots and trainers though, because those flat ballet shoes never stay on my feet at all. I want something that will stay on my feet when I run for a bus.

How big are we talking? And what kind of shoe? My mom wears an 11 and likes Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack. They carry a lot of Sam Edelman, which goes up to a 13. They go on sale a lot too, and you can usually find some good stuff in the more uncommon sizes. I can vouch for the pumps at least being comfortable.

I'm also a half size, a 7.5, so when I buy stuff on sale it's usually something that doesn't REALLY fit me but I justify it because it's cheap. Also, yeah, if something is on sale and available in my size it's usually because no one wants it. I wear the same two pairs of heels for professional settings where I know I'll be on my feet a lot, one pair of Cole Haan platforms that honestly aren't super professional, and the Sam Edelman pumps. Heels that don't fucking kill are expensive, if anyone has any recommendations that aren't Clarks or Naturalizer I'm all ears.

For shoes that stay on your feet, what about slingbacks? I have a pair of Seychelles slingback flats that were no problem during a game of tag with my nephews (AND were on sale in a half size!).

Also, hello Girl Thread. I was going to post this in the "Why was your day good" thread but it seems more fitting here. I'm extremely happy with the Mondrian-inspired manicure I got this weekend. Please share your favorite nail art, whether it's something you did or if you just like it.

Please report back on your boots! I'm thinking about getting my mom something to wear in Amsterdam over New Year's (she and my dad are going on a bucket list trip) and I'd like to get her stuff she can wear to deal with the cold, wet weather since we're in the Southern US and they've never had to worry much about dressing for that stuff.

Hello yes I am a girl

My feet are exactly average which is great for everything except sales, when they inevitably have like 8 pairs of size 6 and 3 of size 10.5 and nothing else. I think they're like the exactly average shape too, because even when other people have to size up or down for certain brands I am always size 7.

My nails are festive as heck:

Yeah before I went full on nail salon and started getting soft gel overlays, I did several coats of nail envy on the top and undersides, then color, then several layers of seche vite on the top, edge, and underside. People thought my nails were fake a lot, and considering they were encased in a layer of what is effectively plastic thicker than my real nails on all sides, they may as well have been.

Peep the gudetama set I have right now:

Lololol
For me, it (basically the nail envy) made my nails harder, which was nice because my natural nails have the structure of several pieces of thin paper glued together with a mostly dried glue stick. If I had natural nails that didn't casually tear off when you give them a mean look, I might have been more worried about long term consequences. Really the only weird thing was that my nails were pretty yellowed under there... not that anyone ever saw them naked.

IDK how people with long nails don't get crud under their nails, it's like I have some kind of yuck geyser under there I swear. I don't even touch anything and BAM grossness. I live a hygienic life only with the existence of nail brushes. I have them on every sink in my house, one at work, and one in my purse.
