I was very disappointed when the "Furries in your nation." thread got skipped, but overall, this was a great episode. Opening on "Hey guys, how would your fakeass country handle the incredibly real, important, and difficult situation of ISIS?" was an inspired choice, one that absolutely did not make me shout "Oh for fuck's sake!" while waiting for the bus.

Jennifer Government was a book where frequent flyer miles points got so huge that every corporation in the world got split up into one of two f.f. programs and having a job was like a caste system and you took the corporation's name as your last name, and the government became super powerless and all cops became private or something.  And then Nike (I know it was Nike because someone died on the swoosh) killed some people to drum up publicity for their shoes.

Nationstates was fun-ish but I never got involved with the forums.  The sequel was more fun but it ran into legal problems or something and they never tried to remake it.

What sort of fucking dork is a fan of capitalism as a concept. Like I get not being a godless commie or not being concerned about politics and just getting on with life but the idea of someone with a pointless enough life that they're roleplaying a nation state going "working 2 jobs to afford a roof is insanely good" is completely alien to me.

This is actually pretty interesting to see, because I think what's happened here is just that Nationstates provides something nothing else can. And it doesn't even provide it well, but it stands after all these years because of it.

Everyone there clearly really wants to roleplay an entire nation, and there's nowhere else to really do that to this level of creativity. All city/nation/empire building games are really gameplay-heavy with very little in the way of room to let you make 'your' world; this is light enough that you're actually able to exert that creativity. Hell, when Nationstates came up in our games forum, I contemplated taking part for exactly that reason, and was going to make my nation 'the land of contrived/supernatural coincidences that all fetish stories are set in'. I had way too much fun envisioning how that actually worked (their borders initially expanded rapidly because neighboring states were too skeeved out to get close, and the wanton transformation and mind control causes health and social care to be both very confusing and lenient), and Nationstates is kind of the only place to be that... specifically creative.

Yet at the same time, I noticed something that I think happened to the place's roleplaying community that I've seen elsewhere: the godmoders muscled out the reasonable people. The people with reserved or realistic play-countries just aren't there anymore, because it's really hard to play out that sort of thing when you're there alongside someone whose response to ISIS is to reduce the entirety of the Middle-East to a pile of goo. I've seen that in other freeform RP stuff, particularly in MMOs; if you introduce weaknesses or nuance, you just get outpaced and outvolumed.

"What would you do against ISIS?"

"What I always do: roll it into my existing power fantasy, duh!"

What's hilarious is that you know all of these godmoder people think they sound super tough and badass when talking about their antimatter bombs (?) and paperclipper nanomachines.

I think that one of the lessons of the F Plus as a whole is about fantasies. And it's not so much that fantasies are inherently bad, or that it's bad to imagine a (possibly) better world. It's just that maybe you don't need to share all of these things with the whole Internet because maybe they're not as interesting as you think.

Oh don't mistake me, they were all stupid and wrong, but the guys talking about nuking cities or dropping gray goo wormhole asteroids or having Dejah Thoris cosplayers behead ISIS leaders on camera and shit seemed to at least be aware that ISIS was a thing happening in the Middle East. That's way less wrong than thinking ISIS is some free-roaming horde of villains from a Chuck Norris movie.

Oh no Lemon!

The podcast does not have similar permission to reproduce, distribute, transmit, or publicly display material you have submitted to Nationstates.net. To my understanding, they were reading off user posts as part of this podcast, that is, material you have submitted to our website.

A quick search on Google for "DCMA takedown" should give you ample material and examples, even templates for composing a DCMA takedown notice to submit regarding your stolen content... and a little extra Google-fu can point you to their hosting provider if you perhaps wanted to submit said theoretical takedown notice over their heads.

Just sayin'.

EDIT: I found their thread -- they really don't like us! Weird.

EDIT 2: Huswyae liked it

EDIT 3: No he didn't

Now...other than them not knowing jack about Decepticons (a G1 Decepticon does not turn into a TRUCK), I didn't think it was all that bad. Juvenile though, to be sure, and clearly the work of someone who just doesn't get it. Also, apparently the guy who accused me of thinking the Middle East was a planet forgot the part he'd just freaking read, where I said I'd invade "whatever Earth" ISIS had come from (canonically, I already own the "original" one).

However, I'm not going to be actually bothered by the commentary of some random yahoos I'd never heard of before this thread. My mention shows that my nation stands out, so I am achieving my objective on that front regardless of how salty they are about it.

I spent all weekend checking into this thread and reading it aloud to the other f plussers.

Biggest disappointment: The guy who made an F Plus parody nation didn't really do anything funny with it, and actually it looks to me like he ended up gradually playing it more like a normal nation.

Biggest highlight: Eclius sending us an email saying that he thought the podcast was fun, but hey we got some things wrong, but it's totally fine, but also we should talk some about the things we did wrong, but anyway nice podcast. Then Eclius goes into the thread and really, really aggressively doesn't care about us for about 20 posts.

Salty? They weren't lamenting what they were reading. I don't think this person is really good at reading emotions in voices.  Also his godmoding doesn't miss a step, even in this response. I'm sure other Nation-States people would take issue with him claiming "canonically" (I'm assuming Nation-States canon, because lol if he means reality) that he owns all of Earth.

"These people don't know the first thing about Transformers! Are they really qualified, then, to make fun of godmoding fake country forums on the Internet?"

There were some guys on there who were threatening to make a podcast where they read and belittle us.

I think this is a case where poop touching is probably not a good idea (because they'll stop being open about being notmad and probably some of them will frame it as a genuine attack) --  but if I had an invisible hand that could shape people's fates, I would totally push them to do that. I think it would be really funny, and probably not even that embarrassing for them. If they came onto these forums I would probably volunteer to read.

I feel kinda bad that some of these guys think anyone really has anything personal against them based on this stuff, but I guess that's the price they pay for being kinda self-important online.

It's also worth noting that a lot of people there think we're pretty funny and/or accurate about parts of their weird hobby and that's fine.

And that the majority opinion is that we're a bunch of nerds being really boring and cracking ourselves up...which is true, 100%.

But yah, if you wanna go there and participate as a real nationstate, that's fine, but please don't just poke them. It's not just for morality's sake, if you start bothering exhibits, they stop being funny and also have pretty legitimate grievances against you, and then before you know it you're the people who are still bothering Chris-chan.

Okay, probably not THAT bad.

We believe modern society as it is has progressed enough. We have gay rights legalised, trans people have rights. Women have rights. Cannabis is bound to be legalised. Shut up, we have progressed enough. Leave it as it is.

Obviously, those rights will never be jeopardized by Godbothering, sanctimonious asswipes. When people gain rights, they are never subsequently taken away or eroded. And there are never other reasons to change. Progress is something you can just stop at exactly the right spot.

Seriously, fuck this guy.

Oh, well there's your problem.

Also, if cannabis is bound to be legalized and white people won't get shot or disproportionately imprisoned for using and selling it, then we've made enough progress, so shut up!

Is there a safe space for people like me who remember when a "safe space" was a place where GLBT people could talk about their problems to someone in safety instead it being of a largely meaningless snarl word?

I'm not trying to be funny here, I'm actually asking. Is there one? I'd like to go there.

I remember that. I also remember that the folks who claimed I could tell them anything immediately freaked out at hearing a thirteen-year-old telling them I might be gay, fired the teacher who'd been gently helping me through a period of intense crisis, and almost expelled me, so the term's been meaningless to me for a while.

The 1990s were super awful and I'm glad they're over forever!

That said, back to the episode: during the early Spaghetti Monster part of the episode, when Lemon asked "will your bomb have holes in it too?", I'm ashamed to admit my first thought was, "Are the holes there so the civilians don't get killed?"

Really? Well hi there, newcomers! If you're one of those who has a sense of humor (especially about yourself) and likes hearing things read in silly voices, we have a thread somewhere around here with suggested episodes for new listeners to hear to dip their toes into the podcast. Personally, since it's October, I recommend the creepypasta episode (episode 68 (https://thefpl.us/episode/68)), it's grand fun. :B

On topic, I have a friend who actually used to play NationStates who's also a longtime fan of the F Plus -- I can't wait to hear what his opinion on this episode will be. X3

Something I disagree with is that people aren't really 'god moding' with their role play. At least not in the same way as the people in the City of Heroes episode.

Someone levelled the 'god moding' criticism at someone roleplaying a military nation with a massive economy. They're just roleplaying according to what their nation can do within the structure of this game. To be honest, it sounded really similar to what Russia or the USA would do if they did a full military engagement on ISIS.

At that point though couldn't you say that having the super-rich super-militarized nation with advanced warfare technology is godmoding itself?

And in the end it doesn't matter because it's several levels of not even being real

It more struck me as a 'well you can't say I'm NOT this powerful', because they're roleplaying beyond the game's confines. That's when it gets a bit muddied, but I absolutely think it's godmoding because it's still making yourself as powerful as possible which will likely interfere with others, even if indirectly.

I would say that someone playing a realistic level of large strength isn't godmoding in this case (although I can't imagine they're very restrained in other places where they might be), especially if you admit potential difficulties. But if your response is to enslave an entire planet, which you are apparently capable of very easily, you are too powerful and are ruining everybody else's fun. People will have to play around you rather than with you, because you will dwarf all others.

It's less of an issue here because none of these people are really playing with each other, you can easily ignore Mr Decepticon (I hope). You're right that it's at its worst when there's no real means to avoid this, so MMOs get it bad. My City of Heroes character might be max level same as somebody else, but when I play mine as in line with that (my guy was like a mix between Iron Man and The Flash powers-wise) and they're playing Literally Satan who is capable of unmaking his foe with a touch, there's no real way to counter that besides the really unreliable method of 'ask them not to'.

...Well, sometimes there is. But back on CoH the people that did that the most were PvPers, which wasn't exactly a good system in CoH anyway. But that's how they wanted to resolve all conflicts, because they built up with it in mind, leading to the same problem: they effectively could never be beaten in a conflict.

EYE OF ZA, October 13, 2016, 04:29:57 pm

Well, no.

I don't think you understand what the site actually is. It's a nation management game. You start off with a small nation with a few million citizens. You then make policy decisions over time that guides your country. The people with super rich, super militarised nations are people that have grown super rich, super militarised nations within the confines of the game.

It's like saying that someone in an MMO with the best weapons and best armour that roleplays as someone with the best weapons and best armour is godmoding.

It seems to me that it's perfectly within their right to roleplay like that.
