Title: New thefpl.us should launch before the end of the year. [point to schlong]
Post by: Lemon on November 20, 2014, 12:41:46 am
It's been mentioned elsewhere, but it's still worth mentioning more. I know the site has been slow as shit. For reasons beyond my understanding, these problems seem to be a lot more prevolent in Chrome. If you boot up IE11, thefpl.us loads like a dream. Please note I am not encouraging you to do such a thing, just mentioning it as a fallback option for the moment.

NOW THEN, THIS NEW SITE:
The new site is being built in Kirby (http://getkirby.com/), a flat-file PHP based CMS. What do those stupid words mean? The important part is that it doesn't have a database. The entire structure is spread out among very, very, very simple text files (written in markdown (https://help.github.com/articles/markdown-basics/) built in a folder structure like /episodes/151/episode.txt - This gives a lot of advantages, but the major two are speed and security. thefpl.us has been hacked more times than you'd expect, and we've also had a fair share of hit & run assholes trying to sell shit on our comments section. The main reason for thefpl.us' speed problems is that Joomla is a bad piece of software, but pricks are reason #2.

This isn't just gonna be a matter of putting the same site on a more stable skeleton, either. I'm gonna be giving this thing a lot of different expandable features so the site is built around the content and not the other way around. I don't want to get too specific yet as some of this shit may or may not work, but I can say the plan is definitely a better website, in a number of ways.

I'll bring up the down side here though, which is that we may (probably?) be losing the comments archive in the move. The new site will have a comments feature, but it won't be the same as the exiting comments feature, we'll be starting fresh. (Neither better or worse, really, just different) If it's possible to scrape the comments from the current site we may try that and make the archive accessible, but know that the comments might be gone. If you want to save fanart or screenshots of favorite comments, that might be a great idea now.

Site's currently running on a dev server I'm not ready to show anyone yet. When it gets a bit more mature I'll throw some links in here for an early peek. I'm excited.

Short term, if you're having troubles connecting, something other than Chrome will probably work better.

That's all fine and dandy, but I was really hoping you could make this new site in WordPress. Can you please redo it in WordPress?

I hope it's going to look like a page from web 1.0. I can't wait for the purple flashing and scrolling comic sans on a black background with glitter on it!

After Frank jolted my memory awake by mentioning the fucking dragon hitcounter, I looked it up and holy shit the site is still active (http://www.boingdragon.com/counters.html). I mean it last updated in 2012, but all things considered, that's still fucking impressive. Hitcounter dragon outlived Geocities!

I also looked it up before I posted! As best I can tell, the only people still using his hitcounters are people using neopets, which is strangely appropriate.

If you could make the buttons strafe in
Fit videos around the text
Put a big slider to the right for adjustment
Make it the same size as an a4 piece of paper so I can print it easily
The site has its own screensaver built-in to help save screens of careless individuals
A video game where you are a snake eating f plus logos, initiated if the close box is pressed

Genuinely I'm open to the idea of user-created stylesheets being an option.

If people want to flex their CSS skills by making alternate "themes" for the site, that would be fun. And I can add that function. Just use Geo Bootstrap (http://code.divshot.com/geo-bootstrap/) as inspiration.

Update: The backlog of comments will be purged. I've tried to copy them over, but it's just not gonna work. I think the new commenting system (Disqus (https://disqus.com/), with anonymity options) is a better method than what we're using now, but the system we're currently using (jcomments) is a black box, and genuinely they only want to let you export jcomments into other versions of jcomments. Fuckers. Plus the shit uses mootools.

Anyway, to reiterate, please save any comments you think are too precious to lose, because they'll be going away soon.

In there defense, it has way different connotations in the UK than in the USA. In the UK it's (iirc) a slur against people with motor control issues and it's not unreasonable for someone to be surprised or upset to hear it if they don't know that in the USA it's just a blanket term for "flailing nerd."

Please reconsider using disqus. I like my privacy, so I use ghostery, which blocks disqus. I also like the comments on the site, but not so much that I'm willing to let disqus collect my personal information. Please don't use disqus.

I apreciate your concern, but there's not an option #2. The site has no database, and we need to use something which will allow comments, store them somewhere else, and it's also gotta be our filtering system, because the current F+ site was receiving about 200 junk spammy comments a day at its peak (now it's down to about 12 a day). I need to just hand that commenting system over to something else because nothing else is worth it.

The thing is, Disqus doesn't really have to track your personal information. You can still post anonymously (as a guest - It will ask for your email address, but it won't verify), and that's only data about you it's received.

Rip in peace old comments. We'll never forget all the good times like, uh, that dude who came in to defend Malatora?

"All these...moments...will be lost...like...disqus...in ghostery. Time...to die..." ~The old comment system, 2007-2014

Seriously though, I'll have to scan through the comments when finals are over, see if I can't salvage some gold.

While there may not be an option to scrape the old comments, what if we got some volunteers to go through and manually archive them with the hopes of reinstating them in the future? I for one could probably get through a few pages worth of comments during downtime at work.

Losing the old comments is whatever, as long as we save Forthelove's drawings and this (http://thefpl.us/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=217:e141&catid=1:podcasts#comment-10692).

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: yes, but that would be a fuckload of work. I doubt it would be worth it.

Basically what you could do is create an XML file, with the following entries...
XML

Title of Episode

The comment, HTML is allowed in here, I think?

<dsq:thread_identifier>(the URL without thefpl.us)</dsq:thread_identifier>
<wp:post_date_gmt>time/date stamp. Must be YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS 24-hour format.</wp:post_date_gmt>

Looking at the docs, I could import a file (https://help.disqus.com/customer/portal/articles/472150) with that structure. But that looks like a hideous amount of data entry.

ETA: I bet you could build a scraper. The shame is that this XML format doesn't have a field for upvotes, which is weird.

So, just out of curiosity, I tried importing some old comments. And it kind of worked.

http://thefpl.us/beta/episode/151#disqus_thread

As you can see, I got the old comments with the old datestamps in there (but without the votes), which is kind of cool, but it shits the bed once it runs into HTML formatting.

If you're curious, here's the XML file I wrote.

Strange... I'm guessing Disqus uses its own markup to display images?

Referencing their documentation, it looks like it simply embeds media by itself simply by providing the direct link. So if one were to create the .xml file, one would have to strip out the HTML from around the link for it to work. That sort of cleaning up would add a bit more to the workload.

The new sites lookin' good. However, I did find a tiny problem. When adjusting the volume on the little player thingamajig, the volume bar doesn't show any change when you scroll it up and down, but the volume does change. Not a major issue, but something I noticed. Might just be an issue on my end though since I always seem to have odd problems with these things.

So, the little player thingamajig is an element, unstyled and given directly to the browser to do as it pleases (all browsers style these completely differently). So a UI issue on the audio element would be the fault of the browser you're using. Do you know what you're using and is it possible it needs to be upgraded?

Please do this, and please make "THE MOST TEENAGERS EPISODE EVER" a tag as well.

So, the little player thingamajig is an element, unstyled and given directly to the browser to do as it pleases (all browsers style these completely differently). So a UI issue on the audio element would be the fault of the browser you're using. Do you know what you're using and is it possible it needs to be upgraded?

Just plain Firefox that should be up to date. When I open the source audio in a new tab, the volume slider works just like it should. It's just that on the site it doesn't show a change when I move the slider up and down.

When I click on tags within an episode page, no matter which tag, it always displays a search for "forums" instead. (Attached is a screenshot of the result I get.) This doesn't happen when clicking on the taglist on the main page.

Good catch.

I have the site set up to cache pages (to speed up load time), but that doesn't work when a site can accept arguments. I set up caching to get ignored on /find/, so that's fixed now.

Unless I'm really dumb, I can't find the spreadsheet with all of the potential/rejected episodes anymore.

I'll be adding that in real soon. Don't yet have the system together (probably gonna work with Boots a bit to get a system that makes sense), but it'll be a more direct, automatically updated list of all the content that's under consideration (not an Excel embed).

It'll almost certainly be up before the year's over.

I'll add one more thing which I am not sure if it is a bug or not. The Supernatural episode's little additional fun animation plays automatically upon loading the page causing the loud yelling to play without warning. Now I really think you guys need to add a trigger warning here if this is intended because some of us have Supernatural episode PTSD.

Submission Hopper is back online (http://thefpl.us/submit/hopper).

Fixed issues with #88 and #45 as well.

So, it's looking like F Plus Live 1 part 1 does not currently exist. It's not any of the feeds, and on the actual page the download button just goes to the gif file for the download button.

Thanks for that. Really appreciate all the work you put into the new site, it looks great. I feel like most of the terrible internet things you read should be happy they get to be on a well made site, as opposed to the terrible sites they are generally on.
