You know, somebody recommended Yu Yu Hakusho to me about six years ago, and I didn't actually sit down and watch it until recently. It's good, and its main character is also pretty good. Rather than being a generic shonen protagonist, who wants to 'get stronger' and 'protect his friends' and 'be the best fighter', his character is defined by his pathological relationships with other people, particularly his alcoholic mother, his childhood best friend, and his schoolyard fighting rival. A big part of the story is him learning to reevaluate the relationships he has with other people, since he's really never learned what a healthy or affectionate relationship looks like. He's a punk, and the process of him learning that other people care about him is a joy to watch.
Plus, the cast of Street Fighter makes a cameo!
