Title: How did you find the F+?
Post by: Ansemaru on April 27, 2013, 12:55:39 am
In the vein of the username thread/my recent questions in the general F+ questions thread, here's a thread for y'all to talk about how you stumbled across this podcast! Should be interesting to see what corners of the internet we all arrived from.

In my case, I found it through guest reader Zarla. She had done a post promoting the podcast with a list of favorite episodes over on Livejournal, and since I was tangentially aware of Portaxx as well through her collaborations with Zarla, I decided to give it a listen. My first episode was the Allrecipes one, and, well... what can I say? I was hooked.

Now it's your turn.

It's been so long I can't be sure my memory is correct, but I think someone one SA linked to the dollfucker episode in one of the dollfucker threads. I've been a fan ever since.

Someone (maybe Portaxx?) linked me to it on the old PoE Can't Aim TF2 server.  I'm an old PoE hand but I don't think I ever heard about it over there.

I found it through watchful-entity; specifically through a post where an asexual evangelist was complaining about all the erasure and stuff in the Aces and Cakes episode.

Icarus linked the Creepypasta episode on Tumblr, and I decided to give it a listen because I know Zarla so I knew there'd be at least one familiar voice on the podcast. Haven't looked back since!

I saw a link to The Best Crowning Podcast of Awesome Greatness on one of the SA TV Tropes threads and quickly realized that The F Plus was much more relevant to my horrible-stuff-on-the-Internet-related interests than about 90% of SA. So I immediately switched to wasting all my time on TFP instead of SA, which is nice since I can do other stuff while listening to podcasts as opposed to reading forum post after forum post. That would've been around this time last year, roughly when The Ace and Cakes first aired, so it's probably my F Plus anniversary soon. Yay me?

Through force, through allure, what? Come on man, details.

A year ago there was an IRC chatroom called #fimfiction that revolves around MLP: FIM fanfiction. A newbie by the name of 'toanoradian' asked about shipping scenarios that fit this cool, almost emotionless pony character. The discussion then naturally progresses to sex. Another user mentioned that the pony is clearly demisexual and then another different one posted a link to this podcast called The F Plus.

So...thanks for making me procrastinate on that fanfiction, guys.

I was on POE back before The F Plus started but wasn't really aware of it because my computer sucked and I couldn't play TF2 on it. Portaxx linked me to it a couple of times but I didn't really pick it up until I was linked to the TVTropes episode on a Something Awful thread. I started to really get into it in the fall of last year when I started my current job and got a new iPod with enough memory to store both my massive music library and podcasts. THen Ballpit was created an it filled the POE-shaped hole in my life.

Same here, except I was obsessive-compulsive about it and started from the beginning.  It must have had something to do with Pokegrrls, though, because I remember my snark group actually started a reading of the material at the same time that the F+ ep came out and went "Oh shit, we're gonna look like we're biting".  We decided to go through with it anyway because there was plenty there to work with, but recording and time issues killed the project.  It's a shame, I was really looking forward to reading the Psydyke line.

Same here, only I found it in the D&D (or was it PYF?) thread about TVTropes. I'd bet lots of listeners found the podcast through that thread, since I can remember the F+ TVTropes episode being linked to literally a dozen times or so over the span of several months.

I used to play on Garbage Day every occasionally; I was there when Captain Profanity read Kent Hovind's doctoral dissertation.  When I started hearing about F+ (I think through "we're recording" showing up in the Garbage Day or PoE steam groups), at first I avoided it like the plague, but then, when I found out what it actually was, that it was basically the same as That Thing What the Captain Done Did, I was all "HELLS YES."  I think the first episode I heard was somewhere around the Fuckdolls one.

Speaking of, and I know this is not the first time I've asked this, but WHY HAVE YOU PEOPLE NOT GOTTEN THE CAPTAIN TO READ SOMETHING? >:(

You mean he's somewhere not reading things -- or if he's reading things, it's real history texts and not Kent Hovind's doctoral dissertation.  That is not "being  really cool."

I found it through Zarla linking to an episode. I think it was the creepypasta one, but I'm not entirely sure (it's been a while and my memory is really awful).

I like internet horror stories, so I stuck around after (it's why I follow the grognards.txt and gamers.txt threads on SA (yes, they're back and there are now rules in place to hopefully prevent them from getting gassed. Again. Because goons.)).

I'm relatively late to the party, only joining in the fun during It's Only Supernatural. I had a debilitating addicting on the spot.

It wasn't through anything too exciting, no SA thread (only getting an account after I found The FPlus), I've never been to PoE during its heyday, or at all for that matter. My friend linked it to me. I'm a late internet bloomer what can I say, I had only ever concerned myself with anime, music and terrible fanfiction.

I was introduced to F+ through the old Something Awful pokegirls thread, of all things. Someone posted the F+ episode on pokegirls, and the podcast's description was right up my alley. I was hooked from the moment Portaxx started sobbing! Seriously, I blitzed through most of the backlog over a couple days, it was great.

All this talk about Portal of Evil makes me wish that I could have been around in its better years, especially now that SA (PYF in particular) is taking a strong stance against mock threads. Of course, I was just a dumb, attention-seeking youngun back in the early oughts, so I probably would have hated it.

Well, I know AO from before the F+ was really a thing, due to mutual interest in shooting mans in videogames(though it started out as mutual interest in gaining XP in videogames), and I'm pretty sure he was the first to link me and get me listening.

Supernatural's still pretty early, MicroMissiles. I came in at 'Go Get 'Em, Tiger!' after following a blog post. The strange thing is that I had independently stumbled upon Zarla's stuff before and somehow managed to miss the links to the podcast during the creepypasta episode. I was kind of blown away when I found out that the threads of my internet atrocity touring history were coming together.

I found it through a friend who (I believe) played a lot of TF2 with the crew. I was just minding my own business when one day, he calls me up and says, "Dude, you gotta check out this podcast, it's the funniest thing I've ever heard." I listened to the first couple of episodes, and from the moment I heard "Timing is Everything" from The Internet After Dark, I was hooked.

Edit: I seem to be a pretty early fan from the looks of things. :P The podcast was already a little established by the time I came in, but I know that Sub Sub Pop was the latest episode when I listened to the first episode.

As awful as I agree The Earwolf Challenge was, I am eternally grateful that it introduced me to you guys.  I'm friends with Brett Hammil, and after he was knocked out I was cheering for The F-plus, and then Left Handed Radio.  I'm embarassed to say you were originally my second choice, but after about two years of listening, I'd put the F-plus at the top any day.

I would say the hooking episode for me was "It's only Supernatural", but I have so many favorites its hard to judge.

And can if I can make one short whiney rant?  Fuck Earwolf.  How do you pit someone well-connected enough to get actual celebrities up against everyone else?  Even if you make a superior podcast (which you guys do) you're still not going to command the listenership of someone who can just casually have Charlie Day drop by for no particular reason.  And especially fuck them for never addressing this fact...

oh god, somebody stop me.

Earwolf Challenge?
Title: How did you find the F+?
Post by: agentanalogue on June 03, 2013, 08:55:20 am
Yes, it was billed as a reality show podcast competition put on by the people who host the "Earwolf" network of podcasts.  Each week contestants were given challenges about what kind of content to create and then content was judged and a podcast got eliminated.

You can hear Lemon (or possibly Adam, but I think it's Lemon) doing an awesome impression of the show's host on "Today's Progress was Yesterday's Form Field" when he says "I don't know guys, I didn't get it."

There were many things that were sort of infuriating about the whole contest.  For one thing that they stacked interview shows up against sketch and concept shows.  The majority of people, unfortunately, favor interview shows because they more closely match the style of radio they're familiar with.

The thing I was ranting about in the previous post was that the show's ultimate winner, (I can't even remember her name) was an interview show run by a married couple, the wife of which had worked in casting down in L.A., so she had excellent connections to bring on celebrity hosts.

In one of the more staggering oversights that they barely even acknowledged, one of their celebrity guest judges, Mark Maron, had been ON her show as a guest already by the time she was competing.

Oh god, stop me again, I could fill pages with my manifesto on this drivel.

No, let's not do that please. That thing is far enough in the past now, it was frustrating, but I've spent enough time being angry about it.

For what it's worth though, we shouldn't have won. "Winning" the competition would have meant being picked up by the Earwolf network, and it would have been a really uncomfortable fit for everyone involved. I wouldn't have liked losing the autonomy of producing our show the way we like, and Earwolf wouldn't have liked dealing with the flak that comes from producing a show that isn't showbiz-based. I'm glad we got a non-zero amount of additional listeners from it, and I got to talk to some of the other contestants, which wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Also, it helped us refocus what the point of the show really is.

I actually met Acierocolotl some time ago in Global Agenda. I think around that time, there might've been somewhere around twenty episodes. I ended up in his clan dealie. He mentioned a podcast he was doing a few times, and at that point, I wasn't familiar with podcasts in any fashion.

I am now familiar with podcasts.

It's been all downhill since.

I know what you're thinking. "What happened to Global Agenda, Dappercat?" Well, turns out it was just a shitty, imbalanced,  dead end game.

My friend had been talking for ... years? ... about this amazing podcast that read terrible internet things with enthusiasm, and once they read her twitter and I just didn't see the appeal. I meet terrible internet people everyday! Why do I want more of them? (Also, I had my BBC breakfast show and that was a pretty huge listening commitment. And then my DJ left and all was sadness and woe.)

Then friend was driving me and a mutual friend somewhere, and she played the Johnny Tsunami episode for the mutual friend. At first I was confused. Then bemused. Then suddenly I was going through the archives. When I texted her to say 'I am completely covered with clingfilm!!!1!!' I think we both I was a lost cause.

Incidentally, this is the second podcast she's introduced me two! First was Wait Wait Don't Tell Me.

I've been hovering around POE and its related offshoots for over a decade now. It's POE, POE-News (and later POEtv in the extremely short time it wasn't filled with racists and anime pederasts) that gave me an interest for found material and weird-ass societal subcultures.

Ha, sorry for the month-late reply.  It was on the charity stream for the Boston Marathon victims (where Slowbeef played Dead to Rights something or other and Diabetus Skyped with donors).  I watched the parts of the stream that they uploaded and it wasn't there.  I'm pretty sure whoever was Skyped in was involved with the podcast in some way, but like I said, I can't really remember who it was.

It was the Chicken Smoothie episode. Someone put up a thread to discuss the episode (the thread because it was asked for (http://www.chickensmoothie.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1961439)) and I liked the description of the podcast. I've been doing readings of bad fanfiction for years so the idea of other people reading bad things on the internet in silly voices is a good selling point. Especially Chicken Smoothie roleplays since even though I'm super active on that site, I avoid the roleplay section like it's on fire because it's just so awful.

Listened the episode, laughed way too hard. Listened to the Godspouse episode, laughed way too hard at that too. I'm slowly working through all the episodes but the multiples and godspouses are still my faves.

CS on F Plus

Postby Blackwolfsong » Thu Aug 29, 2013 10:57 pm
If someone else noted this then I apologize, I scanned a few pages and didn't see it.
t
The F Plus is a podcast that makes fun of people and things that they find disturbing, amusing, or just plain stupid. And apparently they consider CS to be all three.

In this particular episode, they're making fun of CS role-players. Considering that those who roleplay on this forum tend to be very young and not exactly experienced in most ways, I can't really say I agree with publicly making fun of their attempts at creating a story, regardless of my opinion of the end result. But maybe that's just me being too sensitive?

Posted in 18+ and no link provided because Fplus is aimed at adult audiences. A lot of the jokes will go over the heads of younger listeners, and they don't police their language very often. If not familiar with them, don't bother to look them up.

Is anyone else familiar with this podcast or knows about this particular episode? If so, am I perhaps just being too sensitive or is this just the wrong site for them to be poking fun at? (They can't figure out that this is a pet adoptable site apparently)

/laughs in a corner

I mean I am confused why a podcast for an adult audience would target a children's web site with sparkledogs. Especially since CS is one of the smaller ones. I wonder if they also made fun of Aywas, Neopets, Subeta etc. which are way bigger than CS.

I mean they sure would get more laughs out of the club penguin shenanigans I see sometimes, and those are extremely funny.

I was thinking that. CS isn't really intended for adults, (even if there are adults on here!) It'd be better if they made podcasts about content that their audience can relate to. Also it's mean for adults (ie the host of the podcasts) to take the mic out of children.

Listening right now and I think it's pretty funny. I read bad fanfiction as a hobby so really it doesn't seem any different than mocking a bad fanfic.

And I won't lie, I read bad roleplays too. I've read some of my old really bad RPs from Neopets when I was like 11 and they're pretty terribad. I dunno, I guess I find it easy to laugh at myself.

ETA: New Podcast to subscribe to I guess! Finished it and I laughed. A lot.

could you post a link? Or Pm me one if it's inapropriate, I am an adult

As much as I love to read just about anything in print, poorly-written rp, fanfiction or anything else in that realm is my kryptonite. And I admit that I have been the author of some pretty terrible rp and fanfiction. It's practically expected when you're 16 and younger.

So maybe it's just me but I still feel that going to a site aimed for the younger crowd (which pet collecting usually is) and making fun of them is really in bad taste, even for F plus, who usually amuse me greatly, to be honest.

Kind of disappointing really.

So the main argument seems to be "but they're just kids!" yet we read stuff like Sexual Repression Law School which obviously wanted to have adult situations occur even if it had to keep things child-friendly, probably in accordance with site rules or somesuch.

I discovered the F+ because it was mentioned in the general internet mockery thread over on Something Awful.  Said mockery thread was actually from last year, and really, if I didn't have an obsession with finishing the threads over there that I start reading (this one in particular got to 686 pages), I probably never would have known about it.  That would've been sad.

SA mockthread.  It's both why I joined SA and why I started listening to The F Plus.

I have distinct memories of flying into the Athens airport and listening to the dragon dildos episode.  Bus trips across the Greek countryside echo of Roy Orbison completely wrapped up in clingfilm.

I played some of the non-dirty ones for my parents when I was with them for Christmas during a long car ride.  The two terrible recipes episodes and the bottled water episode and I think that was all I had with me (that wasn't adult babies)

My friend played the waifu episode last Wednesday on the way to a built to spill concert and the next day we listened to the adult baby episode. I've been bingeing on episodes since. I may have explained forced clown transformations to people at work.

I'm daring to revive this thread from 2013 because I've been thinking about the topic, wanted to make a post, and there you have it.

My story isn't particularly interesting in terms of stumbling onto an episode from a forum within the bowels of the internet, but someone did tell me about it and soon enough I was eating through about a hundred episodes until I had to wait for new ones just like everyone else. I often peruse the archives while I play TF2, Terraria or just anything that makes me want a little background noise.
It was my sister who dropped a reference, to an episode, in a real face-to-face conversation. That was kind of strange, but once I found the website everything became clear. She is like my Fplus and Encyclopedia Dramatica before I knew what either of those were, educating me on Chris Chan and "feeder" relationships alike. This occasionally backfired because both of my sisters would take advantage of my younger self's naivete and let me learn about shock sites and fetishes the hard way.
These days we talk about Fplus episodes and tell each other about new ones as soon as they come out. It's nice to have someone to bounce my weird observations off of, like how Portaxx is seemingly the most squeamish yet is also the best versed in internet subculture. That's probably weird.

Thanks for the sibling bonding opportunity, everyone.

I got into tumblr around my freshman year of college, and started following someone who fucking loves internet atrocity tourism very early on into that time, and she often reblogs bullshit tumblr stuff for laughs. She linked the multiples episode around the time it came out, and I knew VERY early into listening to it that I already loved the podcast. Having the "A TODDLER AND A FLYING DOG CANNOT DO THE WORK OF AN ADULT HUMAN" post included was what made the episode absolutely perfect for me, because that was a post that had gone around before and I'd laughed at, and hearing it read outloud made it even better.

I'm a Portal of Evil veteran who moved over to Something Awful when it was funny, but grew disenfranchised with SA over the past few years. I found out about Lou Reads the Internet for You over on SA and then found out about the F+ from his podcast. I've listened to the F+ for the past year or two and finally gave in and registered.

I saw Zarla's cat person/dog person flash, watched it another seven times, and then checked out the podcast. When I saw that you'd made an episode about bad dragon, I was hooked.

Since I have a weird thing about listening to podcast episodes in order, the first one I listened to was Episode 4, with the man-pops and the Well Known Food Place. I laughed myself sick at the time, but I have to be very, very willing to overlook the sound quality to listen to it now.

I got here by way of Something Awful as well. The Skyrim mods episode got linked in the Awful/Awesome Mod thread, and after listening I was hooked. I then went to work and got a coworker to start listening as well, though I don't believe she's registered to post.

For me it was the fact that I was already listening to Lou Reads the Internet podcast and someone in a Something Awful thread linked to an episode. I forget which episode it was but I am almost positive it was the TV Tropes episode as I was making my way through the TV Tropes mock thread at the time.

Also I only knew about POE from episode 100 as, even though I had Internet in the late 90s, I didn't really do much interneting until the early 2000s so I missed out on some good early shit!

I remember listening to them introduce themselves, and thinking, "Oh, what a cool concept! I'll start from the beginning!" I'm Scottish, so close enough! I recommend certain podcasts if I think it's what my pals would be into. Do they enjoy laughing at silly internet things? I'll recommend the F Plus. It's worked okay so far!
I love the irony of a bunch of English people being puzzled by the generally north american accents of the F Plus. They're easy to understand, especially compared to the accents of alot of places on these isles. I mean this in a nice way, but if your friends can't stand the accents, they might be idiots.

(A Clootie Well is a place where people dip a bunch of cloth in a sacred stream and tie it to a branch, saying a prayer as they do so. It's a thing in parts of Scotland, Cornwall and Ireland. I can imagine fairy dust lady tying a load of cloth to a tree in this case)

Hmm maybe I shouldn't have picked the kinkiest furry episode as the first one, kinda throwing them into the deep end instantly didn't work well. Should have went with something closer to home, maybe the car fetishists (?)

Oh no, do they have a plague of bullshit there as well??
Think more like north west England. People here are nice but get ready for weird experiences if you're an outsider.
nudna, January 06, 2018, 04:49:30 pm

North West? I'd have thought the West Country!

(As a another Brit, I know what you mean about weird rural stuff. I'd bet that at least one of those regulars has visited a Clootie Well in their time.)
Eider Duck, January 07, 2018, 05:57:29 am

Are you actually British? I've tried recommending a few american podcasts (mainly the f plus) to some of my english friends and the response i get is always the same old "I just can't stand the accents!".
How does this work for you?
(I also have no idea what a clootie well is)
nudna, January 07, 2018, 11:57:27 am

I'm Scottish, so close enough!

Eider Duck, January 07, 2018, 12:33:57 pm

Oh, they can understand the accents fine, they're just being all "Americans just sound awful, I can't stand it". Like, bruh, have you ever heard someone from Liverpool (?)

I bet you she's done that, or better yet, charges people for doing that under her guidance or some shit. She was the type, the most cunning 80 year-old I've ever seen

I find I only find US accents annoying when they are isolated from other US accents. I mean I watch TV fine and listen to podcasts fine but then I recently flew back from the UK to Australia to see family and I heard an American family in Darling Harbour and it really annoyed me even though it shouldn't.

Maybe just ask them why they can watch TV but not listen to podcasts.

Clearly you need to tell your friends it's okay cause the Fplus does a lot of British accents and they can just listen to those episode which will not annoy them at all because they sound so authentically British.

It's a shame that there isn't an episode done entirely in English accents that I could subject my friends to when, for instance, we're in a car and they can't escape :(
I'm sure that would definitely make them huge F plus fans (?)

Play them the Transformers Radio Variety Hour one so they can hear Jack Chick's glorious Rrrroyalty Voice.

That's technically a British accent, isn't it?

In a random 'Lou Reads the Internet for You' episode Lou offhandedly mentioned the F+, and I actually had to rewind him saying the podcast title multiple times to make sure I could search it.
Crossover between Lou Reads and F+ is almost expected, but the since I started only on gaming podcasts, I'm somehow baffled why my feed is now gaming, atrocity tourism and true crime.
I've tried other genres too, but these are the ones that actually stick, my 'happy place' if you will.
I mean I guess I'm just terrible?

I discovered thefplus late last year. It was fourth branch from my original regular podcast (i guess) love, extra hot great (an irreverent tv podcast w/ 4 friends + guests expressing joy in the wonder of the excellence and absurdity of the content of entertainment) which had as a guest Jeb Lund and David Roth. Jeb and Dave aren't mean is a podcast that reviews and (gently) ridicules Hallmark movies. They had as a guests JW Friedman and Chris Collision of ideotv. I don't even own a television had Lemon as a guest. What sold me on checking out thefplus was their ICP book episode (MMFCL) Lemon did acouple of shorts on. One was a lists of acts performing at one of their festivals/carnivals, in it he mentioned some acts name spelled unnecesarily wrong. I immediately suscribed to the podcast. After the end of spontaneanation I began from episode 1. Then everything changed. I'll never look back.
