Title: What's up with your username?
Post by: Ansemaru on April 09, 2013, 08:29:20 am
Every username's got a story behind it. This is a thread for explaining how you ended up with the handle you go by.

This came up in my intro thread, but I'll tell it again and expand on it to get the ball rolling. Back when I was about 11 or so, I wanted to give a character I was drawing a cool name that sounded vaguely fantasy-Japanese without specifically being Japanese, because I was a baby weeaboo. I had the general idea of how syllables fit together for the language, and a general idea that 'maru' was an archaic name-ending that also sounded pretty badass, so I cobbled together "Ansemaru" without any particular regard for what it even could mean.

It could have ended there, but a couple years later I found myself in need of a username for a Deviantart account, and really wanted something that didn't have any numbers or underscores in it so I could sound vaguely unique and respectable. Lo and behold, I had a cool-sounding but nonsense name all lined up! Ever since then, it's sort of been my go-to username on websites, due to the fact that it's never taken and sounds cool.

As a side-note, the character I named that? The character in my icon. Some things never change, I guess.

Yeah, I wanted a name which would sound to the uninformed like I probably thought it up myself, but then when they go to Google it they just find a ton of shit about a city they didn't know existed.

Some species of squids have elbows. This is clearly for hugging.

(My steam and Minecraft profiles are both Cuddlegoose because a few years ago I was desperately sick with a chest cold that left me incapable of producing any sound except a honk, and also because my down comforter ripped and I kept waking up out of fever dreams with feathers sticking to me.)

I'm just your common or garden variety Lovecraft nerd, as the Deep One plushie, the multiple Lovecraft anthologies and the painting on my wall  of my room titled "Innsmouth Family Portrait" can attest. Being white, I spend a lot of time justifying this to myself and to others, but not as much as I did during the heyday of Internet Social Justice when I took everything I read at face value. Also, despite having completed 1.5 English Literature degrees I still haven't managed to write a paper on anything Lovecraftian, though I will be doing my thesis on Robert Chambers of The King in Yellow fame, who despite proceeding Lovecraft by a number of years and having fuck-all to do with his social circle is obviously very affiliated with the Mythos by now.

I like telling this story.

When I was 17 I got my own phone line so I could internet without bothering my family. I called my friends to let them know what my new number was, and life was great. Several weeks later, I visited one of my friends and saw their dry erase board still had my phone number on it but my name had been erased. Next to it were the remaining two items on his mother's shopping list. It looked like this:

Boots
Raingear      377-8642

Said friend is now an illustrator. I don't talk with him very often but I met up with him at a book signing in my town a few years ago and mentioned that I was using the Boots Raingear name online. The name apparently stuck with him too since he has a character named Boots Raingear (http://www.claytonhanmer.com/characters/#n22663) that he likes to draw.

Well I shortened my username to just Al, but originally Allechenko was just an amalgamation of my name, Allen, and —chenko, a common name ending for Ukrainian surnames. Seems terribly careless I know, but I don't have a social media footprint and Allen is not yet my legal name so I'm not worried. I just like having the opportunity to use my first name since I can't do so around most people who know me just yet.
Al, April 09, 2013, 11:50:01 am

...wait, you're named Allen, it's not yet your legal name, and you're Ukranian?

Are you my clone?

Post by: Yossarian on April 09, 2013, 01:02:17 pm
I just really love Catch 22, and a few of the quotes rang with how I was feeling when I made my exodus from the chat room of evil.

"That crazy bastard."
"He's not so crazy," Dunbar said. "He swears he's not going to fly to Bologna."
"That's just what I mean," Dr. Stubbs answered. "That crazy bastard may be the only sane one left."

As far back as Yossarian could recall, he explained to Clevinger with a patient smile, somebody was always hatching a plot to kill him. There were people who cared for him and people who didn't, and those who didn't hated him and were out to get him. They hated him because he was Assyrian. But they couldn't touch him, he told Clevinger, because he was Tarzan, Mandrake, Flash Gordon. He was Bill Shakespeare. He was Cain, Ulysses, the Flying Dutchman; he was Lot in Sodom, Deirdre of the Sorrows, Sweeney in the nightingales among trees. He was miracle ingredient Z-247. He was –
"Crazy!" Clevinger interrupted, shrieking. "That's what you are! Crazy!"

I also used Clevinger briefly but that's not nearly as fun to have people mangle or scream in rage over voice chat when I play The Hidden

As always occurred when he quarreled over principles in which he believed passionately, he would end up gasping furiously for air and blinking back bitter tears of conviction. There were many principles in which Clevinger believed passionately. He was crazy.

Mainly because a lot of people in that group though I was crazy for not wanting to do all the stereotypical furry junk, so I decided that I must be crazy and my username should reflect it. Needless to say no one in that group caught the reference.

I tend to use different usernames wherever I go, so this one is F+/Ball Pit only. I was scrounging around for a name to add to my doc submission, and decided to use a minor ASOIAF character. I realized too late that people who watch Game of Thrones and Google my username might come across spoilers for future events, but, hey, their bad!

Mine's dumb and boring, but here it goes.

In 1999, I was CRAZY into "The Matrix" and "Upright Citizens Brigade".  I liked Agent Smith a lot.  I also loved the series of sketches in which the UCB people were trying to somehow make their lair hip enough for the inexplicable critics who would barge in say that whatever they were doing was totally "monster cockog".

Also I didn't know how to spell, so when I made it the first time, I added the "ue" to the end, and I've never dropped it.

Also it's TOTALLY the name of my improv troupe in my brain.  I think we could go all the way this year at the improvolley.

Title: What's up with your username?
Post by: Psammetichus on April 13, 2013, 10:03:10 pm
Psammetichus was the name of three rather unremarkable Egyptian pharaohs, Psammetichus I, Psammetichus II, and Psammetichus III, naturally, who ruled during the 26th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, c.  672 to 525 BC.

I learned about Psammetichus from Herodotus, the Greek historian. Allegedly, Psammetichus tried an experiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psamtik_I#Discovering_the_origin_of_language) to find if mankind had an "original" language:

The Greek historian Herodotus conveyed an anecdote about Psammetichus in the second volume of his Histories (2.2). During his travel to Egypt, Herodotus heard that Psammetichus sought to discover the origin of language by conducting an experiment with two children. Allegedly he gave two newborn babies to a shepherd, with the instructions that no one should speak to them, but that the shepherd should feed and care for them while listening to determine their first words. The hypothesis was that the first word would be uttered in the root language of all people. When one of the children cried bekos with outstretched arms the shepherd concluded that the word was Phrygian because that was the sound of the Phrygian word for bread. Thus, they concluded that the Phrygians were an older people than the Egyptians, and that Phrygian was the original language of men. There are no other extant sources to verify this story.

Post by: OrganGrinder on April 18, 2013, 07:41:52 am
I have a love / hate relationship with this username, but end up using it a lot because I've had it for so long.

Originally, this username was given to me by Sean Kennedy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RantMedia#Sean_Kennedy) back when RantRadio was a thing that I was a part of. I'd often be in the IRC at the time because every nerdy kid circa 2000 was. At the time I had been using the username JoeNoSN (for Joe No Screen Name) which was hilariously read on the air as 'JoeNoSnot'. I could probably go back and find the exact episode that where this happened and he explained his story, but I don't really feel its worth the effort because its stupid, like '14 year old gets an internet naming baptism' stupid. There's a Bioshock Infinite joke here, but :effort:

Something about a monkey at a circus and it  being the OrganGrinder. I guess its cool, especially when you're 14 and you're looking for an internet moniker, but 12 years later its just a name with a bad backstory. As of the past 3-4 years I've been using the name ThrillhouseBRO more often. I've never been able to put creativity into a name that sticks, so I'm left with this, my oldest name.

By the way, Sean Kennedy is an insane person, whom was doing Freestyle Ranting, and at the time I thought it was helluva cool. But one look on the wikipedia page for what his most famous rant is left me with a very deep shame.

Stole mine from a Double Dragon villain I saw in a clip ad for a Double Dragon tournament fighter.  A year or two later our household got it's first PC, and my older half brother gave us Quake 1, set us up with Quakeworld and Quakespy, and told me I needed a name.  Seeing as I was thinking of a name for myself in a game where I shot people all day, it worked.  I just sorta carried it over when I started interacting with people on the rest of the internet.

Interesting note, I only own 1 firearm, and it's an old .22 rifle I inherited.  I haven't fired it since I was 13.

There's this Lego toy series called Bionicle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bionicle). It had a story where the heroes are called 'Toa'.

I wrote few Bionicle fanfiction, where one of the characters are called 'Toa Nordi'.

'toanordi' becomes 'toanoradian' somehow.

Post by: fluffy on April 26, 2013, 06:41:09 pm
This is just what my friends have called me for years in real life and the reason behind that is a whole bunch of stupid parallel things that all converged in one particular way, but the summary is that I'd use "fluffy" as a placeholder name for things I didn't have a name for yet (or as an adjective for pretty much everything else) and I hate my real name for various reasons (mostly gender-related), and I was visiting a friend who was all "well if you don't like being called that, what should I call you? 'fluffy?'" and it stuck.  Over the next few years I stopped using the other bunches of stupid names I was using online and transitioned everything to this one.

(I was also getting pretty tired of people - furries, mostly, but not exclusively - conflating my fictional characters with me, thus I also made the plaid-critter character to fit the name, as a sort of amalgam of a bunch of other previous characters and an externalization of internalized attributes.)

My username comes from the novels I'm trying to write. In them, Locclo is the king of the Reokeians (basically angels, they go by different names but refer to themselves as Reokeians) and since nobody but me has ever read my work outside of a few chapters, I figured I'd go with it. Until I become rich and famous ( :P ), it's a name that will never be taken.

The name, by the way, has such a stupid origin that I can't believe I still kept it around. The series is called Chronicles of Light (CoL), and for a long time, I used the acronym to break up chapter segments - CoLLoC. Eventually, I decided that it was a decent name for a character, and so Colloc was born, the ruler of the Peiakeians (the sort of demonic counterparts to the Reokeians). Back at the time, I had the stunningly good idea (/sarcasm) of naming counterparts using reversed or rearranged names, so Locclo became the leader of the Reokeians.

What, would you prefer a hugbox? They're not very good for artistic development. A lot of people are bad writers, or get way into needless adjectives. Even Tolkien stuck with 'dwarves' or 'elves' generally, and you're probably not Tolkien.

Like icarus says, a lot of people do this! It's just that that doesn't make it not mockable.

There are a ton of various interpretations of my username “Down10,” so I like to hear what other people imagine it means. I have several that I made up myself, and have heard at least a dozen other guesses.

The short answer: I was searching for a domain name in 1999 to host my graphic design portfolio. While I wanted down.com (http://www.down.com) or 10.com (http://www.10.com), they were already taken. Down10.com (http://www.down10.com) was not. And so it stuck. I've also been incredibly lucky in securing the name across Twitter and Facebook and most of those sites, so I'm a bit married to it by now.

All my user names come from combining a random prefix with a random suffix. The idea is to create a name so polysyllabic and nonindicative that no one else would think of it, forget it, or have any associations with it. The name I use on this site does not adhere to this pattern, however, since it's derived from the Greek word meaning "alien" with the word "mantid" (i.e., a praying mantis). In other words, an insect-person from outer space. I love science fiction and have an abiding (and, fortunately, non-sexual) interest in insects, and I felt that I'd generated one non sequitur too many.

fuck Twitter support

HazelLytle, Jul 31 03:14 pm (PDT):

Hello,

While we understand your frustration, the reported behavior is not in violation of the Twitter Rules (http://twitter.com/rules).

Here are some quick tips to help you with your situation:

• Do not respond to the user. We have found that responding to someone who is intentionally attempting to aggravate you or others encourages them to continue their behavior.
• Block the user. You can block the user using the blocking feature described here: https://support.twitter.com/entries/117063
• Learn more about how to deal with abusive users: https://support.twitter.com/articles/15794
• Learn how to flag inappropriate media here: https://support.twitter.com/articles/20069937

As a policy, we do not mediate content and we do not intervene in disputes between users. This means that users are allowed to post potentially inflammatory content, provided that they do not violate the Twitter Rules.

If someone feels personally threatened, or if you believe the content you are reporting is prohibited in your local jurisdiction, please contact your local authorities with the information you provided to us. You can point local law enforcement to our Law Enforcement Guidelines here: https://support.twitter.com/articles/41949.

Please let us know if you believe the behavior has escalated or otherwise violates our rules.

Thanks,

HazelLytle
Twitter Trust & Safety

Of course they always take forever to get back on any sort of abuse report, and when I had a crazy violent stalker who was creating a new account, sending a lot of threatening/abusive messages, then repeating, by the time they'd get back to me the abuser would have already deleted the accounts.  Useful.

ETA: just noticed that the twitter rules page makes it explicitly against the rules to buy a username. Too bad Iglesias himself never directly contacted me - he had another (shitty) comedian reach out to me with that offer.

Post by: zugunruhe on September 23, 2013, 07:42:19 am
Zugunruhe is like weird and German and stuff

"Zugunruhe (pronounced German pronunciation: [ˈtsuːkˌʔʊnʁuːə]) is a German compound word consisting of Zug (move, migration) and Unruhe (anxiety, restlessness).
In ethology it describes anxious behavior in migratory animals, especially in birds during the normal migration period. When these animals are enclosed, such as in an Emlen funnel, zugunruhe serves to study the seasonal cycles of the migratory syndrome. Zugunruhe involves increased activity towards and after dusk with changes in the normal sleep pattern. Researchers have been able to study the endocrine controls and navigational mechanisms associated with migration by studying zugunruhe."

I came up with it when I was an angsty suburban teen and it stuck around until I was a relatively adjusted urban young adult. I guess I just needed to migrate?

My current username is kind of a boring one, but that's part of the whole plan. I've spent so much of my online life with one or two usernames that I use for basically everything up until recently, but they're kind of lame and mostly embarrassing for me. I went with the "one word that means something to you plus four random digits" formula. I also have a shitton of differently named emails, so I guess I'm just really indecisive.
Fun fact: In hopes of rebranding my digital foot print with something slightly more normal, I inadvertently gave myself a reason to constantly fear that people will think I'm extremely pompous. In reality I just like the sound of the word 'sovereign.'

When I was somewhere around 14 or so I decided to ditch my old online identify and needed a new handle for AOL Instant Messanger. I was taking Latin at the time, so I decided that "Nemo" (meaning no one) would be a good name to use for being anonymous on the Internet. Unfortunately even back in the dark ages of the internet that name wasn't original, so it was suggested I add numbers to it. Being a fan of both the Illuminatus! trilogy and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I chose to append "23" and "42" to the end of my handle, figuring that no one would ever think to use that combination.

Yossarian, April 09, 2013, 01:02:17 pm

Appropriately enough, I read it while in basic training in the military. My favorite part is the scene where the Colonel debates the Chaplin about the validity of Atheism ("isn't that illegal?") and whether officers and enlisted men prayed to the same god ("they do" - "AND HE LISTENS?").

Mostly the username stemmed from my friends and I talking about whether we'd survive bear attacks and such. My friend Ken told me I could totally take on a yak. So I made it my Xbox Live name and have used it for literally everything else since. The End.

Horrible news inside this link. (http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2014/10/iran-orders-probe-into-acid-attacks-women-2014102791955374370.html)
Four women were doused with acid earlier this month in Isfahan, spreading terror and provoking protests.
My first reaction was "hey I know a guy who uses that name on the internet!"

My second reaction was to feel like a total asshole about thinking that.

Mine's a dumb fighting game joke. All the characters in Mortal Kombat speak in vague East Asian-sounding gibberish. Raiden shouts "bobalaaaay!" for one of his moves and it cracks me up every time. The rest, as they say, is history.

I had a character on City of Heroes named 'Clerisy', which is a word for the higher echelon of intelligence in society; scientists, philosophers, writers, all that sort of thing. He was one of those guys who took Idiocracy as a warning, and decided the world needed to be smarter by any means necessary, so it suited him (as did the fact it sounded like 'heresy'). He eventually became my main character, and so the name people started calling me. That led me to eventually start using a modified version as a username both on CoH and elsewhere.

I'm looking into this show because I have terrible taste (and there's something about how stupidly 90s it is that thrills me), and yes, one of the animation directors/producers is named Xavier Picard. Shockingly, he is also the co-producer for the recent film Moomins on the Riviera, so apparently his years of working in cheapass-90s cartoons paid off or something.

Every character had an 'adjective noun' name, and I was (and still am) a gigantic fan of Lovecraft's work. I'm also a writer, so I went with eldritchscribe originally, but realized that wasn't purple monkey dishwasher enough. I went with eldritchhat later, most likely because I was really into top hats back then, and it made a much more interesting avatar.

Despite Lemon's insinuation that I am a British BBC show incarnate, it's the most common of username origins: something dumb you came up with when you were 14. I was playing Maniac Mansion Deluxe, the PC fan-remake of the original game and came upon a gargoyle banister post cap in one of the first rooms that had this description when looked at.
pictorial evidence #1:

Being not quite fluent with the English language at the time, I thought to myself "That's a cool word, I'll use that as my handle from now on!" and that's that. So I suppose you could say I self-identify as a media-gargoyle-banister-kin.

Since I was a shitnerd, I heard the word "Gyrfalcon" in American McGee's Alice and thought "hmm, if this was 'Gyrofalcon' it would sound like some robot bird." So, I changed my name to that. Quickly I realized that it was a shitty pun nobody would get, and started using the shortened version of just "Gyro."

I keep trying to think of a new username to go with. Candidates have included Sibboleth and FractalCat. Nothing really stands out though.

I was trying to think of something that sounds cool but not to pretentious, since it was 2006 and my username was Aegis which sounded cool but also way too pretentious.

I hope you don't mind learning new facts, but in Modern Hebrew 'sibolet' means endurance (mostly used in Hebrew to denote physical, esp. heart and lung capability). In addition, Modern Hebrew doesn't have a native 'th' sound of any kind so Shibboleth actually pronounced 'shibolet' in Hebrew. The word itself actually refers to the part of the plant containing grains.

I can write more about this, but since it's unprovoked I'll keep it at this. Consider yourself lucky.

Mine started out a a reference to Red vs. Blue (Chupathingy), but then I ran into a few places where it had been taken, and amongst my friends and loved ones I've been known to do a rather hilarous, I'm told, impression of a T-rex to delight children and make my wife roll her eyes and smile. Because my name starts with a T I have called that impression the T[inserttherestofmynamehere]saurus-Rex. So I combined the two. And the Chupasaurus-Rex was born.

My current username is pretty self explanatory, it is technically misspelled according to dozerfleet cannon but I prefer to think it is cockney rhyming slang for a shitty breakfast, or morning sex.

I used to use the username niceguy64, I was in high school when I came up with it and it was directly related to always being labeled a "nice guy" with all the terrible connotations connected to it, and my first console was a commodore 64. There were other permutations and even after it became a meme for neckbeards I embraced it ironically in the something awful goony loser sort of sense. A year or two ago I found another niceguy64 out there in the interwebs, there are many, this lent to some amount of anonymity, but this particular guy chose "niceguy" because he was a total creepy rapist pedophile type and he chose "64" because he was born in the year 1964. So since I had been looking for a proper replacement. Thanks Lemon!

I've never had a nickname, so it is my name backwards.

I used to have another name back in the early 2000s for action figure and action figure customization websites, feralwolf or feralwolf72.  I even used it as an xbox 360 handle to play the fighting games.  Then people started asking me if I was a furry about 2 years ago, so that had to stop.

Over the years it eventual shortened to Vocal Flood and then just Vocal, this became my name for all my online profiles.  Then one day I decided I needed more personality to my name. I thought of different phrases that Vocal would be a part of. I checked to see if Vocal Minority was available, It was, I took it, and the rest is history.

Post by: Liatai on August 07, 2016, 08:20:38 pm
What else -- a conlang I tried to write when I was in my teens. It sucked, but hey, this was one of the words that I liked and stuck with me. x3;

Liatai is the feminine form of the noun "liata," plural "liatae," roughly meaning "one who creates," more specifically meaning "one who makes something new from pieces of the old." For example, a carpenter could be a liata if he makes a chair, but if a different guy puts a decorative carving on it, the carver's not a liata as it applies to the chair. Together they could be the chair's liatae, but that depends on local use of the word. x3;

It was more often used in the context of artists, writers, and musicians. Someone who copies a work of art, repeats someone else's story, or sings someone else's song is still important, and there would be another word for them meaning something like "performer" or "one who displays the work of others," but they wouldn't be liatae. A woman who writes songs would be a liatai. Same for a woman who paints original works, tattoos her own designs, or comes up with new stories.

I've been writing, drawing, and coming up with worlds for as long as I can remember, so... when it came time to pick an internet handle, my mind went back to Liatai. ^^;

I did a (frankly somewhat embarrassing) stream-of-consciousness writing experiment when I was in highschool, and I've used bits of it for usernames on various websites over the years, 'Lamprey Cannon' and 'Lancashire McGee' in particular.

Lancashire McGee was wrestling with at the local foghorn, when he was struck by a notion of speeding velocity. Felled by the rapid-moving concept, Lancashire dropped into a metachloric lapse, and produced a wallaby from his prickly fingers. The complacent crew whose cameraderie forbade them to strike the stricken, or fell the fallen, proceeded instead to photograph Lancashire in assorted Tulips, and laugh with sardonic laugher at his decrepitude. The foghorn was then assaulted by a nefarious Gene Wilder, clutching in his massive hands the scripture of Barium, which is the notion that ants buy very small things in very large quantities (economy of scale). The luck of the lamprey assault cannon was with it that day, as the Gene Wilder had absolutely no affinity for creatures without faces. The Lamprey cannon was, however, seized by the amplitude of the frequency modulator, and promptly doubled over in pain. Nuclear weapons stored aboard the good ship Lollipop irradiated the shoestore salesman attempting to clamber away from the dangerous tuna fish can, but the Leopard bashful, replied in kind, with a .45 caliber round through the brain. As the salesman fell, he caught one final glimpse of his true love, the Pinball instruction manual that had guided him through the war of 104. Hours passed, and as the moment finally snapped into real motion, the Peruvians elected to reshape the concept of schtuvermitch, which is to say, the blood of the innocent children. Nothing had prepared the great mushroom for this contingency, and his spawn could only look on in horror, as a pink mist wafted over the land, carrying with it the smell of burnt paper. "Horse hair?!" shouted the hindmost of the nation of ARGUSHTONIA, cowering behind his paper towel fort, as he demanded that the bombs be placed in every place he had ever defecated. The colonel needed no further warning, as the bridge collapsed directly in front of him, and the opening arms of the cuttl'fish twirl'd to reveal a cacaphony of babysitters, all shouting at the fucking microphone that we were all going to sit at dinner with their boyfriends and pass the potatoes as we pleased. New information aside, the Doom was brought to light by a very silly man by way of a death. Only one death, and that was Death-22. Blood for toaster mittens, and the crumbs of my keyboard sting like bragshn'l glass in fingers of a midsummer night's eve, when the quilt fired mattresses howl at the moonlight in the sea of Japan. Treat sandwich was bestowed upon my cauliflower just before the young child pulled out his pancake batter, and made unhealthy of them all. Lancashire reviewed his situation, looking back on Gene Wilder, Lampreys, shoes, and absolute one (that being the temperature that is exactly one degree above zero). But the chloroform collapsed before he could dance another word, and the chamberlain crumbled into the waves, all murky pink, while the corpses of various household names drift upon the surface, mocking all light, and disparaging rumours about Ross Perot.

"Well, maybe we can get it right this time", exhumed Robert Plant as he cradled the curdling of a blood-stained calf, crying out for its mother, and slowly bleeding to death as it starved. He collapsed on his knees, and wept, as the calf too, cried out, for the love of its mother, and for the merciful death that it could never hope for.

Robert Plant cried, and the ship drifted away into the sunstream...Quote from

I'm not entirely sure exactly when I came up with mine, but I've got a theory as to how I did. Everything gets real hazy that far back.

The first game I ever actively set out to 100% was Crash Bandicoot. I don't know why. I think I was just enthralled by the series.
Around '03 or '04 I discovered webcomics near the end of high school and became engrossed with two in particular; "Mac Hall" and "Megatokyo". By the time I graduated in '05 the concept of leetspeak had made steady headway into the forefront of my subconscious.
A few years later with the purchase of the Orange Box, I found myself in need of a Steam username. Thus, 3viltiki was born via an effluvium of nostalgic placenta as 1337 speak and Crash Bandicoot's tiki mask character (Aku Aku) finally collided and merged as a gestaltian idea that came erupting out of the unholy blighted zone of cognizance that is the CRT-fried portion of my prefrontal cortex.
tl;dr - Megatokyo and Crash Bandicoot did the nasty in my subconscious and gestated a dumb username that I can't bear to rid myself of

After being a board member for three years, you get to break my forum-posting cherry with this thread.

So mine comes from the book "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula K. Le Guinn combined with my bad eyesight causing me to read it wrong all these years. The real word is "nusuth" and it means "It doesn't matter" in the native tongue of the people in that book. But I always saw it as "nasuth" for some reason, and it's stuck that way ever since. Still means the same thing in my head, tho.

I wanted a username related to Zelda, and I always remember that phrase "This'd be the bomb shop!" from Wind Waker, soooo I went with Bombshops. It's pretty much my handle on almost every site I'm on at this point.

Thank you for letting me tell this exciting tale.

I used to be Tyfus, back in PoE days. I was a squatter and a punk in those days, and my first name is Titus.

Then I grew a little bit older, and then a lot older, and I found that I wanted a more acceptable, less 3dgy username for situations where that's more fitting.

Now I'm Standplaats (arch: a place a journalist is stationed in Dutch,) Kraków (where I live these days.) Only my really old accounts are still Tyfus or DeTyfus.

"Slarty" is short for the Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy character Slartibartfast. I liked his character because he designed fjords and I thought that was hilarious. "Sir" because I was 14, a nerd and uncreative with names (I'm still two of those things).

Thanks thread for reminding me that my username is over two decades old! [freakout]

Spunk = seminal fluid

Zilla = a romanisation of the second and third syllables of the name 'Gojira', a fictional Japanese monster

69 = it's the sex number

I like things with shells like turtles and snails, my zodiac sign is Cancer the crab and my friend links me with a crab because of that, and I used it for a self-deprecating tagline to a blog i kept for an audience of no one.

Plus I just liked it.

I wanted something semi clever and without any real significance. To me, usernames are like tattoos. If they mean something, eventually its likely that you will no longer identify with its meaning (which, coincidentally, is why I've scrapped every other username I've ever had). If it has no meaning but is relatively charming, it'll never cease to be amicable.

When I was 14 (and edgelord supreme) I went to a friend's house for a Halo LAN party. I attempted to make my username Nemesis, but added an extra i. Nemesisi. It stuck and I just extended it into something that is obviously not a typo.

My real name isn't Dick, but if it was I'd be a dick about it.

It's lifted from a really old swedish comedy website called Borr clip that was just a fake e-zine that wrote nonsense articles. It was pretty funny but is long dead now. Dickthedick was an alias for one of the writers.

I was playing Dragon's Dogma and while going through my inventory stopped and admired the name of the item Salubrious Brew. I don't know where I got the Rex part but knowing me I was thinking about Warcraft III and remembered the name Conjurus Rex from it.

How sad.
