Ask me metal questions. I will answer them or wear leather bracers.

IT'S ONE OF THE TWO, YOU DECIDE!

LEAD OR COPPER?! IS SILVER JUST FOR PUSSIES?!!

Being serious for a moment though, what type of metal is best? Personally, I really like bands who play symphonic metal, for example Xandria, Stratovarius, Apocalyptica and Rhapsody, but I also love classics from the 70s and 80s such as Iron Maiden, Mötley Crue, Ratt etc. I'm also not opposed to little Slayer now and then.

Fuck Slipknot though.

Oi Jack I have a question:

In that Vulvectomy track you posted in the other thread, does the guy singing OR OR EAR AR OR OR OR EAR ROR ROR remind you of scooby doo?

Actually in your honor I have started listening through all the metal in my music library, I like Meshugga, Kowloon Walled City (sans their vocalist) and Horseback very much. Any suggestions for bands with interesting beats based on this stuff? Bear in mind that I once worked as a silversmith.

The best metal is the last show you went to. I'm all philosophical like that.

COME TO METALFORNIA. WE WILL CRUSH

Hey dude. You should listen to what captures your imagination. Asking what the best metal is is like asking "what's the best air?" I would look into Kamelot (
) or Vesperian Sorrow
on the symphonic end. Enforcer and Holy Grail just put out new albums for the underground trad end...
and

Hyvää musiiki suomesta:

Teutonic Thrash (kinda slayer like):

Happy to provide recommendations wherever, if you wanna give me more context. Thanks!

Hey Zsa Zsa,

Slam lyrics are not meant to be listened to. You stop that right his instant and slam the sickness!

You seem to like pretentious stuff! You should check out Textures, Animals as Leaders, Periphery, Last Chance to Reason. More advanced level stuff may be Grayceon, Giant Squid, Sleep, Yob, Bongripper, and Sunn O))))))))))))))). Let me know what you think!

It is true, I cannot enjoy the sound of a dude ritually beating a drum kit to death with a guitar shaped like a medieval polearm unless his friend is clearly enunciating his thoughts about cosmetic genital surgery at the same time.

Jokes, man! Thanks for the recommendations, it's always good to get some direction.

Bangover / Show high from sabaton / midnight chaser. also hatchet played but they suck.

Seriously though midnight chaser is fucking SICK. :D Sabaton's Ghost Division is the song I played just before I went to the show, so we can go with that.

Sabaton opened with ghost division, and closed with a track I don't know, they used to always close with Metal Machine.

Do you know any other albums like Pink by Boris? I like the melodic/noisy combination but all my other dabblings in metal have found albums that are too much of one or the other. Probably because I know shit-all about the genre, tbh.

I don't even know how I'd describe my tastes, but I have liked the Lynn Strait-era Snot, some Death by Stereo, Machine Head, a surprisingly large amount of the Korpiklaani output, and the more aggressive songs by such like Anthrax or GWAR.  I've never been really a fan of the deathmetal growl, that's probably the most offputting aspect of it, though I've still liked the one Lamb of God song I heard on one of the Guitar Heroes (despite the hilariously awful lyrics)

So I'd like to catch more of that sort of metal, certainly.  Not all of it, though, I want to leave at least a breeding pair in the wild.

Hey Dacey,

I'm not really into drone stuff, so I'm farming the question out to a bud of mine to see what he thinks. Off the top of my head I'd recommend Goblin Cock as I think that's somewhat similar, but it's not my forte.

Acier - You like thrash and folk metal. I would recommend bands like tyr, turisas, eluveitie, gama bomb, kreator. Do you like DRI? If you do, you should probably listen to toxic holocaust immediately if not sooner.

Youtube for "Korpiklaani".  I would have called it Finnish drinky-metal but I'm F+'s resident expert at mangled English, not metal.  Pretty much any song will do, but I have a fondness for "Vodka" due to the singer's enthusiastic near-miss at English.  It's something like a lazer!

Definitely, definitely on the thrash metal side of things, upon locating things off your list.  DRI just took me right back, that's for sure.

A small selection bands I've seen live, just to add to your catalogue:

Anonymus - trilingual Quebecois thrash metal, probably the most violent moshpit I've ever been in.
Tagada Jones - second-most violent moshpit, with giant-ass corn-fed motherfuckers with sharp-spiked shoulders on their jackets trying to shouldercheck anybody in the pit.  Correspondingly, swiftly the deadest pit I've ever been in and more's the pity.
BARF - While not always to my liking, a group willing to make a heavy metal dirge with Frenglish lyrics about a little fish caught in a mudpuddle amuses.
Lofofora: Probably progrock?  They do cover a lot of different styles, though I'd probably suggest just finding the different versions of "Les Gens" (versus "Les Gens de Maintenant") they do to get a taste.  Also the singer is unnervingly weird on stage.

Jack Chick, you gotta help me.  I'm normally not a metal guy, obviously, but I do like an axe that is wielded by a pro.  Now, is there any more stuff that features guitar shreddings like this?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=xBM1LCZKkQg&feature=fvwp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=xBM1LCZKkQg&feature=fvwp)  I mean, I hope that there are some other guys that are in this echelon because I desperately need to hear more of this shit.

Hey Bunnybread, I think this is a bit problematic. See, you're starting with something that's just a liiiiiiittle too progressive, which will decrease your listening enjoyment.

I feel you should start with something a little easier, like this here

I'll also post this for you:

Anyone who likes Korpiklaani might want to check out Amorphis or Finntroll. The first is perhaps a bit more mainstream, but Finntroll has just the right amount of ridiculous in it.

I've also been listening a bit of Kivimetsän Druidi, who apparently filmed their music video in Skyrim.

Also including this because I love this song.

EDIT: Oh look. Something for bunnybread too.

Haha, as soon as the first Finnish band showed up I wondered if Montrith would uphold the stereotype and recommend some metal from her homeland. I now like to imagine that Finnish babies are born with a metal playlist tattooed on their arm, written in runes.

It's kind of like how American babies are born eating a hamburger and hating taxes.

Really I think you need to be listening to Hevisaurus, which will explain everything you need to know about Finland and metal.

I figured everyone here knows about Finntroll, since I spaz out about them quite a bit (them being one of my favorite bands).  But yeah you should pick up all of their albums! :D

Also Montrith, no love for Ensiferum?

Oh, very funny you two. Listen, we Finns are like the dwarfs of Europe. We may not be the prettiest or the wittiest people around, but by Ukko we know our metal! If you're a Finn you will like metal, or you will have a lousy time. After all, this guy got a street named after him, and he's not even that heavy.

Ensiferum is okay, but not in my top 10. For those who are not so into heavy, you might want to check out Poets of the Fall. If you've ever played Max Payne, you already know what I'm talking about.

Lololol with the poets of the fall, why not put on the HIM or the Poisonblack? ;) Although anything with Ville Laihiala will do...

As I'm sure a bunch of people can attest, I have nothing but love for Finland, and there's plenty more Finnish metal bands I can post, but with the current direction of this thread I don't think anyone here wants Behexen, Satanic Warmaster, or Rotten sound. :P

Because they suck.

But seriously, I'm done derailing jack's thread. I give the floor back to you, maestro. Though you must understand that make fun of our music again and I'm legally obligated to fly there and punch you in the tits. MicroMissles, February 12, 2013, 11:36:54 pm

Montrith - I have absolutely nothing but love and respect for Finland and it's music.

MicroMissiles:

1) Made it through about 5 minutes. Too slows/borings for me. In general, I find doom metal extremely boring (and pretty much anything else slow). They had some interesting work with textures coming at around 3 min, but not enough to really hold my interest. Also clean singing without a proper transition or setup coming off abrasive vocals always rubs me the wrong way.
2) I'm noticing a trend here. This is MUCH better. Excellent layering. The interlude is fucking fantastic. Linked to a couple buddies. Excellent find. Thanks!
3) I feel like I'm at ren faire. Where are my pantaloons?? A lot of this works and a lot of it doesn't. I want them to take a step back and simplify, they're trying to do too much and nothing really stands out. :| Doing a little reading it seems like this is the closer to a full album, which is probably a little divorced from the context of the album. I'll listen to a couple other tracks and see if I like em better.
4) This is excellent. Really like the slow evolution aped from electronica. Hungary has put out a ton of fantastic stuff lately, come to think of it. Great scene there.
(marblebog side project)
5) Based on the cover art, I'm going to like the hell out of this. Upon listening, it's ok. Nothing exceptional, which is a bit disappointing. USBM has a lot of great stuff lately. High hopes? :/
6) I like this a lot more.

Your taste seems to extend to longer tracks (everything you linked was around 10 minutes), with major transitions occurring halfway through. It's a pretty peculiar set of stuff!

Speaking of long tracks, when is Fplus going to fill it's obligation as an Internet Thing and include a sample of Ghost Love Score? I think they take your computer away if you do a thing with music and don't use it, or does that only apply for videos. I'll check those links out later, since I'm on my way to a job interview right now.

That's a pretty concise examination. And how was I unaware of anything extending from Marblebog? Hungary does have quite the good output considering it's population. Kinda sucks that it shares Ukraine's association with NS metal. But what'll ya do? Anyway, here's another salvo of tracks.

Speaking of Ukrainian NS metal!

I'm pretty sure every self respecting BM fan knows of these guys.

Black metal plus krautrock.

Not metal in the slightest but worthy of attention nonetheless.

Irish folk metal.

Black metal gone Hemmingway.

Otherwise pretty relaxed for a metal concert.

I'd settle for their cover of Over the Hills, myself. That seems to be another popular option.
