1. They're fucking shithouse but there's not much that's going to happen while there's bipartisan support from Labor. Unless there's a big swing to the left from them nothing's going to happen, and our political climate's going rightwards like everyone elses so fat chance, it's too important to pay Serco billions of dollars to torture people. Trump fucked up his ban, but we did a way better job of it.

Many major US civil rights organizations wrote to HBO expressing their deep concern over the show. These included the NAACP, National Hispanic Media Coalition, American Indians in Film/TV, Empowering Pacific Islander Communities and The Asian Pacific American Media Coalition (which itself includes the Asian American Justice Center, Asian Pacific American Advocates, Japanese American Citizens League, Media Action Network for Asian Americans, National Federation of Filipino American Associations, and more).[34]
I like Australia until I start hearing how much we overuse swear words. And how much of a big deal sports are, because I'm left so far in the goddamn lurch when conversation turns to them.
I was doorknocking with the Greens in St Kilda the day after the Bulldogs won the grand final. That was... a very hungover day, and it took me a while to find out why.

Yes, we did get the grand final off (at least, Victoria did; it's where Victoria elected to stick one of its public holidays since the federal government basically just goes 'you've got ten public holidays, stick 'em where you want' to all states), but I didn't watch it and wasn't keeping track of who was even in it. I stopped paying attention after I bombed in the office's footy tipping (which was mostly done by asking my sister for help). I spent the day itself playing video games, didn't check the news, and the next day found out it was apparently a big deal.I like Australia until I start hearing how much we overuse swear words. Don't you get the grand final off though? Or is that just the AFL? Either way I don't like sports but I'd be fine with sports related public holidays. I think the overuse of swearwords should be taken in context. I mean I swear a bit but I wouldn't say I overuse swearwords, it's just that the meaning of the words is pretty diluted/changed so they aren't dropped as infrequently as in other countries where that isn't as much of a thing and really do we want to hold our wy of speaking up to the standards of other countries? I feel like the most important thing about those words is how they are said and how they are intended to be taken. I'd very rarely tell someone I didn't like/know to fuck off but I'd say that all the time to actual friends and I think the difference is usually pretty clear.

Has the country had their annual "everything is on fire because the summer is so fucking hot" event yet?

Given the fact they only ever include people who have died, Curtin was the best available choice. Whitlam's good too and could potentially lead to a fun playstyle, but he's kinda too divisive for a recent leader. Civ's no stranger to having controversial leaders (Enrico Dandolo for Venice and Oda Nobunaga for Japan in V) or recent figures (hell, they patched in Steve Jobs as a Great Merchant in V), but if you're doing both at once you'd want it to be a pretty agreed-upon positive one. Especially if it's for a country that's never even been in the series before. You want to show them that you understand and like them!
Curtin's a nice pick because of that, but also because he embodies an era and style of Australia that resonates with people and could have fun gameplay. They can tap into the Diggers which are a relatively iconic thing in terms of Australia's impact on war, and he's of a time where you can get the playstyle to reflect another thing people think of when they hear 'Australia', which is its comparatively unusual sparseness; a few big, fancy cities, and a United States-sized amount of sparsely-populated, unappealing land. The only living PM (or any PM) I could see being a better choice than Curtin would be if you went for Hawke, and made him a playstyle that instead highlights Australia's love of recreation.

Re: Greens. I would love to be proven wrong and if they have a shot anywhere you figure it would be Victoria so more power to you.The Greens are doing pretty well in Victoria on scales you don't see. Recent council elections led to a lot of new Greens representatives on the local level, and in pretty much all the 'just outside Melbourne' federal seats the Greens got fairly close to being elected. I'm expecting we'll see some of those seats flip in the next federal election.
Is the WA thing really a rejection of One Nation or was it the Libs getting done and One Nation copped it as well because of the recent preference deal? I'm a QLD sexboy so maybe I just run into more of Pauline's posse.
FUCK OFF YOU POMMIE BASTARD.

Anyone want to place bets on how this postal plebiscite thing is going to shake out?
FinchChunk, August 12, 2017, 08:40:22 am
Do we think that last one is a possibility? The plebiscite going yes but it still being voted down. If the plebiscite data is reported by electorate then there are probably some members who will reason that their electorate is against it and therefore they should/can vote against it but it seems like there'd be such a backlash against the party as a whole that the leadership would go to lengths to assure that didn't happen.Hard to say how possible 'Plebiscite returns yes but the LNP still don't pass it' is. As I said, the ones with the keys there are the esoteric backbenchers you never hear from. Across the general right-wing parties there's a relatively even spread between openly 'will abide by the plebiscite's result' (Hanson most notably, but there's others) and 'will be voting no regardless' (Abbott, Bernardi), There's also some people who haven't said but can be pretty clearly read (Turnbull will probably abide by it, Joyce likely won't (if he's still eligible to vote in the first place)). Labor will mostly be voting in support, although in some cases I imagine that it's more out of pressure than actual belief, so I'd estimate that between all those we can make educated guesses about it comes out roughly equal-ish, maybe slightly in favor of 'no'. But those known quantities aren't the entire parliament.
I hope that the amount of noise on social media will reduce the amount this disadvantages young people. I feel like the bigger question is how many young people just don't care, or don't care enough.

After years of trying to find a way to watch it and finding nothing at all, I'm now downloading 303 episodes of Spicks and Specks. This might be the best thing that's happened to me all year.Good work on achieving your goal though I'm not sure it's Wil Anderson's best work.

How are y'all going? I'm in Qld where we're sort of blissfully unaware of proper long term lockdowns but looking at the news today and the way people on Australian coronavirus Reddit are talking (not a great source of sanity I know) I worry for my fellow country people.I'm in NSW, my region was previously part of the Greater Sydney area but was recently changed to regional because that was confusing people. Unfortunately that's only emboldened people to ignore restrictions and carry on as usual.
FinchChunk, September 18, 2021, 09:59:55 pm
I'm mostly concerned about Sydney since that's got a bigger outbreak with more relaxed rules. Plus there's a lot more ignoring restrictions apparently.
GirlKisser420, September 19, 2021, 04:33:16 am
I moved from the Gold Coast in 2016 to England right before Brexit happened and then Boris got in and now I'm in one of the worst countries in terms of the covid outbreak. My family on the coast and my sister in Melbourne can't come and see my new-born son so that's good. I hope Queensland stays reasonably untouched because lockdowns are shit.
