Title: Screw you Lemon, we're posting about Doctor Who
Post by: Cleretic on April 23, 2016, 08:15:34 pm
For full effect, just assume that everyone in this thread is wearing a TARDIS dress, really long scarf, and a bow tie.

They revealed the new companion today. She seems pretty fun, might be from the eighties, and given when they probably filmed it has worryingly prescient taste in clothes.

Isn't this the talk show with aliens?

E.T. + Dr. Phil = Dr. Who?

I haven't seen any of it since I left for grad school (I'm not paying for cable for myself), so how has Capaldi been?

Capaldi's fantastic, although the writing haven't always been. His characterization was a bit shaky and rough in his first season; they knew they wanted this Doctor to be rough and assholish but ultimately kind and well-meaning, but interpretations of that varied from 'autistic' to 'out of touch dad' to 'military officer'. Most of the stories are really good, but the character's inconsistent.

His second season isn't as good (although I still think pretty highly of it as a package), but its greatest strength is that they found a direction that worked for the character: he's basically an aging punk rocker from the 70s, and they have so much fun with that. Most of all him; he's clearly having so much fun every time he gets to break out the guitar.

Excuse me a moment, I need to make a call.

I tried so hard to watch Dr.  Who,  and enjoyed what I saw, but it seemed to be trying to be smart seeming without any real depth

I enjoy watching Doctor Who mainly as a ridiculous nonsense spectacle for children with some occasionally interesting character work and novel settings or plot devices. I would probably enjoy anime if I got around to watching it.

I also like the old show and think it's generally smarter that the 2005 revival, especially post-Moffat's showrunning. I have many tedious Doctor Who opinions.

Edit: The clip seems good. The new companion reminds me of Donna, which owns. Clara was always kind of a nothing character to me, despite Jenna Coleman's good efforts.

You know, as much as I liked the seasons when Clara was around (for the most part; season 7 is probably my least favorite when you exclude the 50th anniversary stuff), I would agree. Jenna Coleman is fun enough as an actress, I liked the character well enough, but she was just sort of... there. A very 'standard' companion, she didn't really do much to distinguish herself.

I have a great respect for Donna as a companion, and I'm pretty happy to have another companion like her (especially if, like some people are suspecting, Bill is from the 80s), but personally my favorite was always Amy. It was probably a combination of her having a pretty strong character, the Cracks from season 5 (which she was pretty heavily connected to during all that) being extremely my jam, and Karen Gillan just being really pretty.

Doctor Who is my jam! I will say the classic series is probably more interestingly written and more willing to take chances? I personally really like the Moffat era a LOT more than the one before it since he seems to understand Doctor Who as a character and a concept much better?

I love love love Capaldi! He owns that role! I also loved Clara!  I feel like her arc was pretty interesting, basically slowly giving into her control freak tendencies and picking up the Doctor's worst habits.

Bill looks super fun! I feel like there could maybe be a Seven and Ace type thing going on (highly speculating of course) which I would love! I also love the idea of her being from the eighties.

So far, I like Pearl Mackie and her character.  Bill (shades of Ace, I hope) sounds like a breath of fresh air after Clara, who was slowly morphing into a Mary Sue/Tumblrina hybrid.

I'd say there are two classics that stand on their own without needing to know the overall arc of the season. There's "Listen" from Series 8 and "Heaven Sent" from Series 9.

Mummy on the Orient Express and Flatline. The latter one is the better one.

I thought Listen was a bit naff, personally.

For everyone's entertainment, someone on Twitter found and shared an early potential cast list for the Doctor in the 1996 TV movie. And there's some great hypothetical castings in here.

https://twitter.com/NothingLane/status/736279386081611777 (https://twitter.com/NothingLane/status/736279386081611777)

Paul McGann, who eventually got the role, is pretty high up there. But also on his level is Eric Idle and Jeff Goldblum, that guy from The Thick Of It is also pretty high on the shortlist, and there might be a far-flung alternate universe where David Bowie played the Doctor as well as being the Doctor.

...Not gonna lie, I'd love to see Billy Connolly as the Doctor, but we already have a Scotsman who has to exercise all the restraint ever to avoid screaming, 'FUCK.'  Still, a windswept and interesting Doctor would be fun.

Guess what? The Doctor Who Christmas special is pretty good! Matt Lucas is gonna be a pretty fun addition to the regular cast.

Okay so the new season is in about ten days, I've been steering clear of most spoilers, but a few little bits that are worth noting before then:

-This will be both Peter Capaldi and Stephen Moffat's last year. We don't yet know who the next Doctor is after Capaldi (don't get excited because this is never accurate, but to some the frontrunner is Tilda Swinton), but Chris Chibnaill is going to be taking over from Moffat as showrunner. He'll be taking a more writers-room approach than has been done in the past for Who, which should help reduce the issues with Chibnaill's writing that came about particularly in his Torchwood work.

-According to the actress, the new companion is going to be openly gay. So that's cool!

-Spoilery reveal for for some later-season stuff: Possibly as a going-away present to Peter Capaldi, we are getting a two-parter with O.G. Mondas Cybermen. As in the stocking-masked, wearing-air-conditioning, 'older than Murphy's avatar' versions of the Cybermen..

And in other news, Americans here should look into the Britbox streaming service, which is going to have the largest ever archive of instant-streaming Classic Who. Personally that's everything I've ever wanted from a streaming service, but it hasn't touched down in Australia yet so I'm very jealous.

Okay, so far this season's episodes have been about:

-Lesbians wanting to run away together.
-That you should respect a society that was there before you.
-17th-Century London was just like, the fucking worst unless you were a rich white dude.
-Eating young people to prolong the life of the old.
-Late-stage capitalism in space.

What I'm saying is that the writers got fucking MAD at modern politics and society, and it's the best.

At it's best Doctor Who was always good for social commentary (I'm thinking particularly of Sylvester McCoy's run).

Someone on SA has put forward the theory that The Happiness Patrol is required viewing for all writers this season. And it's one of those notions that you can't easily knock back, because if it was true it'd look exactly the same.

So, are we getting a female doctor? Bill's line about liking women, and someone around her old age, seemed like a hint to me.

We'll find out very soon, after the Wimbledon men's final. But they've been keeping the casting remarkably secret, so we can't really say for sure who it might be or even whether or not they're a man.

Kris Marshall is the leading betting favorite, which all but confirms it won't be Kris Marshall, at least.

Not wank fodder? They saw Paul McGann, right?

I mean I guess we could also not assume a woman exists only to provide sexual pleasure to men but in the mean time working toward  gender equity in wank fodder is a baby step.

Edit: Olivia Colman as a fussy yet sinister Master?  She's in everything.

Also, like Peter Capaldi is a dashing man. I'm certain there's wank material about his doctor already so....

I am super pumped to see what a female Doc will be like. <3 <3 I hope we get a three person TARDIS crew <3 <3
