Maybe this podcast has desensitised me to a lot of crazy, but still playing The Sims 1 feels like the weirdest thing in this episode. I hope Eva at least has the pet dragon expansion.

So I didn't realize this until quite some time after the recording, but I'm now convinced that Hamish's head and face are meant to resemble Toothless from the movie version of How to Train Your Dragon. Eva Draconis mentioned several times that Hamish is "toothless like a frog," which is kind of gibberish since most frogs do have teeth, which is why my rendition of our glorious dragon king has tiny teeth on his upper jaw. But now I'm sure that he has no teeth because he's supposed to be movie Toothless... who also has teeth.

I dunno man it's not like that's the most nonsense thing on the site! But your brain wanders when you've spent way too many hours rendering a dragon boyfriend not once, but twice, what can I say!

I'm sad that we missed out on Shell Game narrating the dragon turtle.

I wonder if she'd have gotten along with Loki Wives.

I was really struck by the similarity in her writing to the way tumblr multiple systems talk about all the wacky and rAnDoM hijinks that their headmates get up to. But Eva Draconis is clearly unwell to a significant degree and thinks she's documenting something important (that definitely isn't her sleep paralysis demons and psychosis), while the people on tumblr are faking it for attention.

I don't know what to make of this observation.

I think the most batshit insane part of this entire episode, to the point where it caught me off guard a bit, is how casually Ms. Draconis mentions Hamish's apparent shittyness and controlling personality

Specifically the instance where he threatens genocide of the human species, and her response is basically "lol isn't he soooooo cute?" Like? What the fuck? Why is your imaginary friend Space Dragon Hitler? Why do you never treat this as strange? (yes I am aware this is likely the result of either missing medication for a mental disorder or being undiagnosed for said disorder shut up)

I imagined a snapping turtle head, then he'd have beak instead of teeth. Also I wondered about the eggs. Are they regular human eggs? Are they eggs impregnated by various alien suitors? Are they laid their by other aliens or reptiles? Does she just carry around a carton of grade A cage free eggs?

Hamish would be awful if he was real, but so would Christian Grey, or Edward Cullen, or any brooding Gothic  male romance archetype. The bizarre controlling nature of their behavior is limited to the realm of fantasy, where it can be appreciated like a sort of childish over-attachment. Or it's like he's upset that he loves her so much that he can't leave her even if she wears red and plays The Sims 1. The perfect tsundere husbando.

Really the way Eva describes Hamish's behavior reminds me of people who over-anthropomorphize their pets' thoughts for fun. You know, the kind of thing where you'll see a video of a cat thinking its owner has vanished and it'll be captioned something like "hooman? Where has hooman gone? What is this sorceeerrryyyy???" or a flailing dog getting groomed and it'll be dubbed "what are you doing?! I wish a curse upon your children and your children's children!! I shall slay this weird water-monster you have presented to me!! Bork bork bork!" etc. etc.

This makes it feel weirder to me because while the "dangerous, controlling monster boyfriend" archetype is definitely A Thing in fantasy romance, rarely is it combined with this sort of cutesy-wutesy "oh, Rover is so confused by this toy robot that lights up and spins around" angle. Hamish is an all-powerful dragon but his controlling behavior is portrayed as being as adorably harmless as a particularly feisty kitten, and that's... uh, weird. It's weird that he has the brain of a pet on Instagram, and it's weird that it's coupled with all of this talk of how dashing and worshipped he is.

Also everyone definitely needs to see the gallery (https://web.archive.org/web/20181119095246/http://www.orionmindproject.com/gallery.html), which takes forever to load but trust me, it is most certainly worth it.

OF NOTE IN THE GALLERY: Hamish's design changes quite a bit and this is explained as him being something of a shapeshifter. How convenient. The weird head shape intrigued me but again, I'm pretty sure this is just supposed to be Toothless.

The "Dinosaur" creature is undoubtedly based in part on the "dinosauroid" that served as an entirely theoretical evolution of dromaeosaurids, had they become a sapient race akin to humans. This was never a serious scientific theory and was only presented by paleontologist Dale Russel as a kind of "hey, what if?" scenario, and yet this damned creature shows up in SO MANY kook posts about "real life reptilian aliens". THEY'RE NOT EVEN REPTILES! IT'S A DINOSAUR-MAN! MADE FOR FUN!

Similarly, this is not the first time (and most certainly won't be the last) I've seen Jurassic Park dinosaur bodies presented as "real astral dragons/dinosaurs". Jurassic Park's concept artists drew from what science knew about theropods at the time, but we've learned a ton since then, and JP's raptors have proven to not be all that accurate. And yet when people talk about interdimensional dino-dragon-beasts that totally exist for realsies, wouldn't you know it! They tend to have bodies that closely resemble those of the raptors in the 1993 Hollywood movie Jurassic Park. Wow, who would have known that those production artists would have missed the mark on actual dromaeosaurid anatomy, but absolutely nailed the look of hundreds of species of space-faring, magical draconic beings that can communicate on different planes of reality and especially enjoy talking to lonely human nerds! They should win some kind of award for such a fantastic discovery, I think.

It's sad that she decided to go with the shape shifting excuse to make him look more anthropoid. Writing erotica around a being that looks like this is...well, it's brave. You gotta figure out what goes where after all.

I'm considering an alternative interpretation where this is some strange deep internet romance ARG someone was running, like kindle authors doing a weird Reptilians conspiracy thing as a cute supernatural romance. I don't know if I believe it, as that's pretty high concept and her actual prose and art are not that at all. Maybe she just reminds me of whatever episode it was that had the alien romance that was also Settlers of Catan? Because the mismatched alien marriage to a primitive planet thing is like a whole romance sub-sub-genre, and the idea of being stuck with your bizarre abusive boyfriend alien because you're his eugenics project feels of that ilk.

I'd guess it's more a product of the same kind of logic being employed. Even if she believes everything she writes, she's still telling a story to herself and using ideas that show up in bizarre niche romance plots. Sort of like how a Lokiwife might use Joss Whedon tropes in a transcript of an encounter without realizing how fake it seems.
