Title: Experiences Introducing Other People to The F-Plus?
Post by: LancashireMcGee on May 06, 2016, 08:22:06 pm
This is a podcast which, occasionally, deals with some super gross things, so it might not be the sort of thing you'd show your parents and/or grandparents (unless they're cool parents and/or grandparents). However, some people we meet in our daily lives might be more internet-savvy, or jaded, or whatever adjective might conceivably prepare somebody for the possibility of dickbugs. This can lead to stories.

My story comes from back when I was in undergrad, I think senior year. There was this girl I ran into occasionally, whom I'd chatted with her a few times in the hall, and with whom I shared a couple friends. One day, she was sitting alone in the cafeteria at lunch, and I asked if I could join her, and we hit it off. We were into a lot of the same kind of movies and she started talking about Silent Hill, and it was all a good time, so I asked her out for coffee. That day, we ended up on the topic of podcasts, and as she'd talked about weird stuff she'd found on reddit or whatever, I decided that F-Plus might be in her wheelhouse. I rattled off a few topics about episodes I'd listened to recently, Robot-Dragon micronations, Dolphin/Bigfoot enthusiasts, and Asexuals. The date went fine, but it was a little awkward, which I figured was basically standard first-date nervousness.

So, later that night, curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to look her up on facebook. The first thing that popped up wasn't actually her personal page, but the page for her artwork. That led me to her deviantart page (!), which led me to her tumblr account (!!!) which was dedicated to an anime which was apparently about a 13-year-old boy having sex with his ancient demon butler [freakout]!!!!!!!!![freakout] I have since been told by people that the anime in question isn't actually about this, but all I had to go by at the time was this lady's fanart, complete with a long post about why a 13-year-old having sex with a demon butler isn't creepy, because he's extremely mature for his age! [freakout][freakout][freakout][freakout][freakout][freakout][freakout].

Also, the punchline to this is, obviously, that she was asexual. And she made a loooooong post on her tumblr about me, and how there was a 'radio show' I listened to where people 'called in' to make fun of asexuals, and how she bravely stepped in to defend the integrity of asexuals everywhere against my insults. To be perfectly honest, I do feel bad about that whole thing, and wish I hadn't made that particular faux pas (I hate to make anyone feel like something the cat dragged in), though that's slighty mitigated by all the other stuff.

So, does anybody else have any good F-Plus introduction stories?

Once I was listening to the F Plus in a cafe, and the waiter asked me what I was smiling about. Usually when that happens I lie and say I'm listening to Radio 4, but in a fit of honesty I told him about the podcast. I described the general premise and some specific episodes. I may have mentioned some of the gross ones. About halfway through my explanation I could see panic start to set in, but I kept going anyway. When I was finished, he just said, 'Well, that sounds like fun.' And I haven't been back to that cafe since, even though I really like their coffee.

See that's why you introduce people by talking about really inoffensive but wonderful stuff like Joan Ocean and that one guy who thinks his wife is a genie.

I have introduced it to a whole bunch of people because I really can't help myself. I play it for friends sometimes when they visit. Everyone has liked it a lot, but you can never really tell if they like it to the point where they listen to it on their own, especially if they're new to podcasts. But then recently a friend of mine told me about a skype date he had with his new girlfriend... to introduce her to fplus. And lo did the virus spread.

I also will never forget the one time I had to pause the penis enlargement episode to google an anatomical diagram of the penis for someone, who had never thought about his taint before as much as he did that day.

If I somehow become aware that a new acquaintance is into a subject that The F Plus covered, I will try to play an episode about said subject for them. Their reaction then informs me how much further contact I should have with them. Most people have enjoyed what they've heard, and the only pushback I've encountered before was in regards to male pregnancy (that pushback came long before the episode was even recorded, but that's a whole 'nother story). Still waiting for a really negative outcome, if only cause it'd be a funny story to share. Aside from that, I've shared some with my wife. She's mildly entertained, but not a fan of the show's format unfortunately.

I've also played a few episodes over the store's speakers during work. It's not that I meant to share it with others, as I hit pause whenever anyone's coming in, but once time I wasn't fast enough and ended up treating a customer to a quick clip of Bunnybread yelling about boners or something similar. I'm sure that counts as some sort of introduction.

I've exposed people on my Saturday third shift to various readings from The F Plus and they've responded with apathy.

Just to be sure, I've also exposed them to MBMBAM, Mouth Sounds by Neil Ciecirega, and parts of The Dollop, and I've come to the conclusion that my co-workers are dead inside.

I tried twice, once with a roomie (apathy, except for the Roy Orbison episode, which he loved) and once with a friend (already a listener!). Those are the only times I've mentioned the F Plus in public. I like this podcast a lot, but talking about it is very awkward, and sussing out when to talk about it even more so.

complete with a long post about why a 13-year-old having sex with a demon butler isn't creepy, because he's extremely mature for his age!

I hate it when people can't own that the taboo, creepy stuff they're into is, in fact, creepy. If it turns you on it turns you on, and in most cases it's not like there's anything wrong with that, but the bending over backwards to justify it as totes fine is so cringeworthy. OTOH, considering that justification is the basis of maybe 33% of all F Plus fodder I suppose I shouldn't complain that much.

Anyway, by far my most successful introduction of the F Plus has been to Mistress Eva, an atrocity tourist who makes me look like a naive atrocity bumpkin. (She's subsequently branched out into Lou Reads, for instance, something I could never do in a million years.*) Other attempts seem to have mostly been directed at people who listen to too many podcasts already and thus aren't super blown away by one more, or to people who haven't really gotten the humor or appeal. I remember one guy I used to game with, one of those dudes who was always trying to be mindful of his privileged place in the world in ways that mostly just involved regurgitating the newest identity politics crap he'd read about on the Internet, getting all offended about the Ridiculists making jokes about the "trans*" asterisk. Despite my attempts to point out that no one was making fun of trans people, just a written affectation that even a lot of trans people think is idiotic, he wasn't having it and never listened to any more.

*She has an amusing story involving our friendship and the Cum in Food episode which I will try to get her to post in this thread. It amuses me, anyway.

TheCrawlingChaos, May 10, 2016, 11:21:33 am

As my dear friend, The Crawling Chaos, requested, here's the story. Y'all should appreciate it.

I was listening to Lou Reads one day (my atrocity tourism is probably pathological at this point - I've listened to every single one of his episodes, including the infamous bug chasers) and he started reading a thread wherein a couple described how much they loved to put their cum in food. As the story unfolded, the similarities between these cum-eaters (we'll call them the CEs) and two of my closest friends, known here as The Crawling Chaos and Elizabeth Sterling, were uncanny. What started out as being kind of a funny coincidence became truly disconcerting. The CEs loved cooking food for their friends - my friends, a professionally training culinary artist and a British person with a passion for exotic spices, loved to cook for us. The CEs loved gaming with their friends - I game with my two friends all the time. One of the CEs was American and the other was Britsh, the American (same gender as my friend, too) was looking forward to studying in England so they could be with their partner. THIS IS THE EXACT SAME SITUATION AS MY TWO BEST FRIENDS. And then the CE who was posting on the thread started talking about how excited they were to go to the Download music festival. My best friends had recently gone to Download. I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

So for those keeping track, here are the similarities:
- Both love to cook for friends and did so often
- Both love gaming with friends
- Both are a binational couple, one being from America, the other from England
- The genders of both couples were the same
- Both American halves of the couples studied in England to be closer to their partners and had maintained long distance relationships for many years
- Both went to the same goddamn music festival...

The question then became: were my friends the very same couple who were confessing in that thread to putting their cum in their friends' food so that they could watch them unknowingly eat their disgusting bodily fluids? THIS IS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION. I was so worried, that I had to ask The Crawling Chaos in some seemingly casual fashion - even though I was now almost terrified of them - what year EXACTLY did they go to Download.

Much to my eternal relief, they had gone to the festival *before* the CEs had even made the post from which Lou read. It did make me wonder though, how many of the people I know do weird shit and secretly post about it on the internet. What if I *did* come across something that was undeniably my best friend and not just a bizarre series of coincidences that implied my friends were doing something horrifyingly gross to me. Food for thought -- though hopefully not my-best-friends-cum-filled food.

Slightly less upsetting than my other story, I did get to introduce a car full of grad students on the drive back from a string theory conference, via "The Search for Terrestrial Intelligence". Hearing the reactions to "Bird food, gravitation and ESP for down-ness, rotation around various heavenly structures, helium for up-ness", and the complete misunderstanding of what magnets are and how they work was priceless.

I was on a debate team in undergrad, and we all listened to the debate.org episode on the way to a tournament.  Everyone loved it, and it even branched into a conversation about obvious logical fallacies and how to identify them in competition.  Some of the newbies to the team actually learned a thing or two from that discussion.

I don't think any of my friends on the team listened to any other episodes after that (I didn't mention it too often, it just kinda came up in conversation on the ride to the tournament), but hey, at least we got a good experience out of it.

I introduced a friend to The F Plus during a trip to Massachusetts. We were both sleep deprived and hanging out in the hotel room when she realized she could turn on the Food Network on mute and one of the food episodes and they synced up pretty well.

This has led to a number of drunken nights where we turn on a random episode of The F Plus and try to find a muted TV show to sync it with.

Ever since I listened to the entire back catalog, I find that in conversation people will talk about things like niche fetishes and furries in a joking manner because they haven't personally run into them. It's really hard not to say, "well actually there's a website for [adult babies/glasses fetish/etc.] and it's terrifying and I've read it." I've occasionally cited episodes in conversations about weird shit. "No, that's real. It's called frotting and if you do it you're a cock-rub warrior. Look at this."

I take in most of my media in podcast/radio form, so for my girlfriend it's become a sort of Russian roulette. Spin the barrel, plug in the aux cord and see if you get something informative, something funny or something horrifying that you can't unhear (although I would argue that FPlus is a little of all three).

I don't know a lot of people who are very into Weird Internet Shit, so there's not a lot of common ground to go for. I mean sure, the weird fetishes are weird, but they're not often funny weird unless you're in the mindset of laughing at that. Same with laughably bad fiction, or pretentious people who have no idea what they're talking about. I'm not often around a lot of people with that groundwork.

So you know what plays well, in all situations? What everyone has the groundwork to understand?

$50 bottles of water.

I've played a few episodes to my parents, but only the food ones. They are usually pretty tame.

The problem with a few of the more tame episodes is that they have occasional references to other much worse episodes, like at the start of the really early teenage angst one, they talk about the fuckdolls episode.

Necroposting for the fact that I introduced a bunch of people on a Discord I'm on to The F Plus after one of the other members independently discovered Hans Von Hozel. She and the person I'm about to quote have really been getting into it, but the other person was the one who went into detail:

Friend:
omg [Chaos] so I was listening to the sherlock one at work
and it was making me laugh and like.. cringe and whisper 'oh no' to myself
more than the previous eps
and my coworkers noticed but didn't let me get away with 'it's just a funny podcast' this time, they wanted to know what it was
so I was like 'people do dramatic readings of strange internet things, you really do not want to know any more than that' and one coworker was like 'oh so they're reading weird fanfiction, huh?' and I was like 'I mean not exclusively but.. yeah' and they were both like 'got it' and we moved on
but then after that coworker left for the day it was just me and my coworker sandra in the office and she was like 'you're still laughing, you should play the podcast aloud, I'm curious now'

Me:
:D Did you?

Friend:
and I did my best to dissuade her, she knows about fandom but isn't into it and has read occasional fics her fannish friend(s) have sent her but like.... gen stuff
but she insisted
and I was still at the part of that episode where they're mocking all the intensely asexual OOC cuddling fic so I was like 'well this isn't weird porn YET, it'll be fine'
and then like one minute in they finished that section and started in on the A/B/O stuff
she was so incredulous and kept being like 'wait, WHAT is knotting? are these real things people write?'
......so explaining ABO fanfic to my coworker while pretending I was much less familiar with it than I am was An Experience

Me:
This is awesome. Can I tell the F Plus forums about it?

Friend:
oh man okay
tell me if there are amusing reactions

[...]

Me:
I did just tell my coworker who I was driving home just now. He hadn't actually heard of A/B/O fic either, so explaining that to him was a good time. [...] I was like "it's this sort of school of fanfic porn predicated on misunderstandings of wolf biology," to which his response was "what the fuck, that sounds like a Mad Lib."

Friend:
oh god it really does
