2. Do people enjoy Chris Lilley, consider him gimmicky/racist, or both?  We Can be Heroes had some good bits but eeeehhhhh

1. They're fucking shithouse but there's not much that's going to happen while there's bipartisan support from Labor. Unless there's a big swing to the left from them nothing's going to happen, and our political climate's going rightwards like everyone elses so fat chance, it's too important to pay Serco billions of dollars to torture people. Trump fucked up his ban, but we did a way better job of it.
2. Chris Lilley sucks, and hasn't done anything in a while because everyone realized that. I feel like suppose are being exposed to him all of a sudden, which is weird.

Sucks :(  I guess the resettlement deal was always destined to be more of a face-saving measure than a realistic, attainable thing anyway.  Probably going to see a massive expansion of prison/detention centre privatization in the U.S. now too, thanks domald frump

Some of his shows aired on HBO in several countries, most of them stayed  under the radar and got lukewarm reviews. Shit kind of hit the fan when Jonah from Tonga aired in the U.S.

Many major US civil rights organizations wrote to HBO expressing their deep concern over the show. These included the NAACP, National Hispanic Media Coalition, American Indians in Film/TV, Empowering Pacific Islander Communities and The Asian Pacific American Media Coalition (which itself includes the Asian American Justice Center, Asian Pacific American Advocates, Japanese American Citizens League, Media Action Network for Asian Americans, National Federation of Filipino American Associations, and more).[34]

Sorry for bringing up this negative stuff, you guys have some choice birbs, some of the best on the planet. Fruit doves and lorikeets are awesome.

Thinking about applying to a short-term exchange program with ANU. Is Canberra as boring as I've heard it is?

(I mean, I'm okay with boring. Given what's happening in the U.S., boring would be a nice change of pace.)

Canberra's got a decent music scene but otherwise it's like a suburb of Washington DC. As far as I can tell everyone's a spy or political gremlin.

There's worse places to be though. It's real neat to just have the regular depressing grind of capitalism as everyone tries to circumvent minimum wage laws and our unemployment welfare department goes on some insane debt campaign.

I like Australia until I start hearing how much we overuse swear words. And how much of a big deal sports are, because I'm left so far in the goddamn lurch when conversation turns to them.

I was doorknocking with the Greens in St Kilda the day after the Bulldogs won the grand final. That was... a very hungover day, and it took me a while to find out why.

Don't you get the grand final off though? Or is that just the AFL? Either way I don't like sports but I'd be fine with sports related public holidays. I think the overuse of swearwords should be taken in context. I mean I swear a bit but I wouldn't say I overuse swearwords, it's just that the meaning of the words is pretty diluted/changed so they aren't dropped as infrequently as in other countries where that isn't as much of a thing and really do we want to hold our wy of speaking up to the standards of other countries? I feel like the most important thing about those words is how they are said and how they are intended to be taken. I'd very rarely tell someone I didn't like/know to fuck off but I'd say that all the time to actual friends and I think the difference is usually pretty clear.

Blandest, January 31, 2017, 01:17:56 am
Yes, we did get the grand final off (at least, Victoria did; it's where Victoria elected to stick one of its public holidays since the federal government basically just goes 'you've got ten public holidays, stick 'em where you want' to all states), but I didn't watch it and wasn't keeping track of who was even in it. I stopped paying attention after I bombed in the office's footy tipping (which was mostly done by asking my sister for help). I spent the day itself playing video games, didn't check the news, and the next day found out it was apparently a big deal.

And on the wearing, in general it doesn't bother me because yeah, we generally aren't THAT bad. But we're a lot more liberal with them than other countries for some reason, and I really hate that some people go nuts with that and struggle to string together a sentence without swearing several times in it. Also I don't like that the C word slides into that sort of speech WAY more than it seems to in other countries.

Australia as a country is a lot closer to a working class culture, except without the class consciousness or political structures that would be a really nice pairing. Lots of swearing, bit of anti-intellectualism, disrespect to authority (as long as it's through the right channels) and flannel shirts.

If anyone's in melbourne swing by Flinders street to help the protest against evicting the homeless people from around the station, shit's pretty gross.
Title: the australia zone
Post by: Blandest on February 01, 2017, 02:04:15 am
I don't really understand what the protests are about. They need to do maintenance work on the station and they can't do that with people living underneath the scaffolding. SBS is saying that they are going to be providing services and accommodation for twenty of the remaining homeless people for two years and the protest seems to be less about the general idea that we shouldn't condemn homeless people, and more about the specific situation.

Curtain is a weirdly good choice, that actually looks kind of cool.
Other potential leaders? Gough could get a bonus to policy change and speed up public works? Howard could get bonuses from natural resources but using a living PM is probably poor taste.

Given the fact they only ever include people who have died, Curtin was the best available choice. Whitlam's good too and could potentially lead to a fun playstyle, but he's kinda too divisive for a recent leader. Civ's no stranger to having controversial leaders (Enrico Dandolo for Venice and Oda Nobunaga for Japan in V) or recent figures (hell, they patched in Steve Jobs as a Great Merchant in V), but if you're doing both at once you'd want it to be a pretty agreed-upon positive one. Especially if it's for a country that's never even been in the series before. You want to show them that you understand and like them!

Curtin's a nice pick because of that, but also because he embodies an era and style of Australia that resonates with people and could have fun gameplay. They can tap into the Diggers which are a relatively iconic thing in terms of Australia's impact on war, and he's of a time where you can get the playstyle to reflect another thing people think of when they hear 'Australia', which is its comparatively unusual sparseness; a few big, fancy cities, and a United States-sized amount of sparsely-populated, unappealing land. The only living PM (or any PM) I could see being a better choice than Curtin would be if you went for Hawke, and made him a playstyle that instead highlights Australia's love of recreation.

Wait till Howard dies and then make it so Australia has no guns. Or Abbott and his trait could be getting a bonus whenever he sticks to really poor decisions he has made, like say attacking a stronger force or eating a raw onion o n live TV.

Title: the australia zone
Post by: FinchChunk on March 26, 2017, 07:49:19 pm
I had a conversation with a friend of mine who is fairly active in the LNP (for context my politics are of the 'caring about refugee rights and gay marriage not so much about unions' left wing variety, basically I voted for the Sex party last election). His position was that Turnbull is hamstrung because he took power on the basis that he would be consultative and not make so many 'captain's calls' so he isn't in a position to go strongly against his party. My feeling is that what people didn't like about Abbot wasn't the captain's calls themselves but the fact that they were all moronic and on that basis Turnbull should pursue the positions that made him popular in the first place (e.g. sensible opinions on gay marriage and climate change) and he'd probably be surprised at the support he'd receive from young people who feel labour doesn't speak for them and are fed up with the Greens not achieving much.

That said looking at all the support One Nation et al. have and I wonder if I just think that because I'm just in a massive echo chamber (I almost certainly am).

I've never voted for Libs but Labour is terrible and the Greens aren't very inspiring these days, if Turnbull stopped being such a dickhead about gay marriage and just made it happen and made some sensible moves towards transitioning to more reliance on renewables I'd strongly think about voting for them, if only to provide some positive reinforcement. And if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle, I guess.

I'm gonna generally... disagree with the Greens comments, speaking as a member of the Victorian Green since last year. But I think you're touching on something I've voiced elsewhere, is that Australia's really lacked any strong, charismatic political leaders since Rudd. Everyone since him has either been playing it safe (Turnbull), is an obvious idiot (Abbott), or just isn't all that interesting (Shorten, debatably Di Natale), which leads to a lot of dissatisfaction with the leaders themselves because they neither catch people's attention, nor achieve much of note. I'd argue that's part of why Hanson got her foot back in the door; she might be a terrible person and kind of an idiot (albeit not to Abbott's level), but at least she's a fairly strong public speaker and you know she believes what she's saying. That's a lot more than you can say for either of the big party leaders right now.

I'd love to see Labor win government in the next election, but if Shorten's still leader at the time it will be less because of them winning and more because the Liberals lost far harder. I've been rooting for Albanese or Plibersek to take over from him, they're way better at it, but it doesn't look like it'll happen.

The Greens are doing pretty well in Victoria on scales you don't see. Recent council elections led to a lot of new Greens representatives on the local level, and in pretty much all the 'just outside Melbourne' federal seats the Greens got fairly close to being elected. I'm expecting we'll see some of those seats flip in the next federal election.

You can argue a lot of things about the WA election, really, and I'm not sure how true any of it would be, but I do think some of it was a 'rejection' of One Nation. I think what we're seeing isn't exactly people deliberately going against them, but more that they just don't have the pull that we kept being told they did. The media loved the notion that she was 'Australia's Trump' but she just doesn't have that pull or an environment to incite it. She had some lucky timing during the federal election, but now that even that small amount of shine has scratched off since then, and we're seeing her get rejected not actively, but as her returning to the 'sideshow' image of her she had for so long.

I don't think we'll be completely rid of PHON come next federal election--they're polling extremely well in Queensland to the point where I can't imagine them not getting a bit of a foothold--but they won't be seen as the New Third Force for very long.

I hope you're right. I do think how vocally she has supported Trump is a mistake. His idiocy is becoming an accepted fact and I think the big lesson of Abbot is that even bigoted assholes don't like to be seen as idiots.

Maybe I should just move to Victoria, though I hear your coffee is pretty shit.

Anyone want to place bets on how this postal plebiscite thing is going to shake out?
FinchChunk, August 12, 2017, 08:40:22 am

OKAY SO

What we've got so far:
-No real idea if the High Court challenge is going to have wings or not, from what I know the question is entirely if Whitlam's postal vote on the national anthem holds up as precedent or not.
-Postal votes tend to skew overwhelmingly towards older demographics, who tend to be more conservative.
-The ACL's propaganda machine is already revving up, as are a number of pro-marriage equality rallies.
-'Morally abstaining' appeared to be an idea gaining traction pretty early, but is getting pretty resoundingly shouted down through various high-profile social media posts. Chances are there'll be some of it, but...
-Transactions with the AEC jumped HARD on Friday, with over sixteen times the usual amount of people enrolling or updating their details. A vast majority of these people are likely doing this specifically to ensure they can vote 'yes', because conservatives tend to be pretty on the ball with updating their details and don't have a whole lot to fight for here.
-Looks like the ABS have no idea what they're doing with this, but that's something that could be resolved in the future.

So in summary, it's probably going to happen, it's gonna be an ugly as hell few months, and we have no idea how it will shake out since it's essentially a phenomenally conservative-skewing polling method clashing against exactly what gets liberal-leaning voters incensed.

Now, what'll happen after that we can't say for certain. If it comes back 'no' it's likely to just be a big depressing fight for nothing, and Labor will just pass it if they win the next election (which they probably will, barring some cataclysmic disaster). If it comes back 'yes' things get really interesting, as we don't exactly know how it's gonna shake out; Labor's most likely going to be almost all in favor, and the Greens definitely will be, but we legitimately have no idea how many are going to abide by the plebiscite, who's going to vote no regardless, and who might be swayed by more minute details. It's not something that breaks down very easily; fucking Hanson has said she'll vote in accordance with the plebiscite. So if it comes back 'yes' either we'll see it win by tooth and nail, or get knocked down by a bunch of people going against the public response, and it's pretty much all going to come down to the really esoteric Liberal backbenchers you never hear about.

...And if it gets knocked down after a 'yes' the LNP are going to struggle hard to recover from the fact they went rather specifically against the will of the people and wasted a bunch of money for nothing, meaning Labor win the next election by a landslide. And then pass it in like, the first month.
Title: the australia zone
Post by: FinchChunk on August 14, 2017, 04:18:44 am
Do we think that last one is a possibility? The plebiscite going yes but it still being voted down. If the plebiscite data is reported by electorate then there are probably some members who will reason that their electorate is against it and therefore they should/can vote against it but it seems like there'd be such a backlash against the party as a whole that the leadership would go to lengths to assure that didn't happen.

I hope that the amount of noise on social media will reduce the amount this disadvantages young people. I feel like the bigger question is how many young people just don't care, or don't care enough.

Hard to say how possible 'Plebiscite returns yes but the LNP still don't pass it' is. As I said, the ones with the keys there are the esoteric backbenchers you never hear from. Across the general right-wing parties there's a relatively even spread between openly 'will abide by the plebiscite's result' (Hanson most notably, but there's others) and 'will be voting no regardless' (Abbott, Bernardi), There's also some people who haven't said but can be pretty clearly read (Turnbull will probably abide by it, Joyce likely won't (if he's still eligible to vote in the first place)). Labor will mostly be voting in support, although in some cases I imagine that it's more out of pressure than actual belief, so I'd estimate that between all those we can make educated guesses about it comes out roughly equal-ish, maybe slightly in favor of 'no'. But those known quantities aren't the entire parliament.

So it really comes down to the big swathe of MPs that you can't really judge one way or the other, the esoteric backbenchers. Both among the Liberals and Labor, to be honest, although I'd be more confident about the Labor members voting yes if only for coldly political reasons. But that's a lot of question marks in that murky middle range, enough to decide the vote even with everyone who's been up-front.

Title: the australia zone

The reason they went for it is because they figured they have the right to do a postal plebiscite without putting it through parliament, which is what's going to the High Court in early September. If it gets knocked down there, it's not coming back specifically because that's the reason they're going for it.

Regardless of how you feel about the particular people caught up in this, it's a dumb rule and has no real place in the constitution. Maybe instead of the plebiscite they could just pass that shit in parliament by doing their job, and then spend the plebiscite money on a referendum to change section 44.

So I'm gonna be in Sydney for a week and I'm currently looking for an Airbnb for the first two days of it.

Is Manly Beach cool? I'm considering it on name alone (also the price is pretty good) but I've heard it's kind of touristy? Any other suggestions not too far from central Sydney?

Also: Any of y'all wanna hang out?
Title: the australia zone
Post by: FinchChunk on August 16, 2018, 12:52:42 am
(grain of salt, I'm a Queenslander not a Sydneysider so this is from my visits, proper locals will know better despite the fact that they are otherwise moral degenerates)

The issue with Manly is if you want to get to the proper centre of town you need to get over the bridge or take the ferry which can be a hassle. It sort of depends why you're visiting and if there are particular areas you want to to have easy access to (E.g. do you want to go bar hopping, do you want to have easy access to the galleries and the opera house etc).

When I visit Sydney I usually stay somewhere like Darlinghurst or Paddington which is convenient for going out  and near the central public transport hubs, but also because that's where my friends are and I'm going to visit the city. If you're going for more for the Aussie beach stuff Manly might still be a goer especially if you're mainly out during the day and don't mind a few ferry rides.
Bondi might be another option? Still a bit touristy but it has the beach and is on the right side of the Bay.

I went to Manly Beach. It wasn’t too crowded, but I wasn’t there on a hot day.

If you take the backstage tour at the opera house, they let you play the piano in the practice room, so you can tell everyone you’ve played piano at the Sydney Opera House.

Harbor cruises are gorgeous. Taronga Zoo has great views. The National Maritime Museum has cool ships and stuff. Giant Dwarf Theater hosts excellent comedy shows.

Try Vegemite.

Well, I'm gonna be spending 5 days in Sydney proper, so one of my objectives for this Airbnb was to find a place that wasn't too damn far away, but would give me a different vibe than the city center.

Also, as a lifelong Midwesterner, the very idea of a "beach" confuses and fascinates me.

Here's what a beach looks like over here:

australian politics is so fucking dumb. america thinks it's the worst at politics because they have one azathoth-esque idiot king but our entire political class is a hollow scramble for power by apparatchiks who inherited everything that is pathetic about this nation's culture, and do so in a way that has constantly failed for everyone involved over the course of a decade. the blatant contempt for the idea of a public good is on constant display, and it's all mired in false echoes of blokiness. Once again we have a conflict over whether we get a fascistic uncle or a suit stuffed with millions of dollars. 6th time's the fucking charm though rite
