Haha, Cleopatra 2525 and Jack Of All Trades! Those are syndicated tv shows I've not thought of in a long time.

The Cleopatra 2525 wiki is sadly underdeveloped https://headhuntersholosuite.fandom.com/wiki/Cleopatra_2525

I'm probably biased as the document submitter, but this was probably one of the single funniest goddamned episodes ever.

A few things included in the doc that were not used in the episode:

Bevel Lemelisk, the guy who built EVERY weapon of mass destruction in the Star Wars universe.

Callista Ming, Luke Skywalker's love interest in multiple novels who was the ghost of a dead Jedi. Luke repeatedly made out with her while she was possessing the body of one of Luke's dead apprentices.

Waru, a giant, inter-dimensional pile of meat covered in gold plates that ate Jedi

The Yuuzhan Vong, an race of extra-galactic sado-masochists who only used organic technology and killed over 300 trillion when they tried to invade the Star Wars galaxy

That snow monster that tried to eat Luke at the start of The Empire Strikes Back, who later rallied an army of other snow monsters to kill Luke Skywalker when he briefly returned to Planet Hoth in the novel Darksaber

Some stuff I came across but didn't include in the document because it was too inside baseball for the podcast:

BoShek (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/BoShek/Legends), aka "That dumpy guy Obi Wan talked to in the background of the Cantina", who is revealed in the novels to be a better smuggler than Han Solo and also secretly a Jedi and just generally the raddest most awesome character ever, MOM!

IG-88 (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/IG-88B), one of the bounty hunters who shows up in the background of a single scene in The Empire Strikes Back. A short story about him reveals he secretly uploaded his brain into the Second Death Star before Return of the Jedi and was about to secretly conquer the universe before said Death Star got blown up.

C-3PX (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/C-3PX), an evil C-3PO that shoots people.

Triclops (http://Triclops), the Emperor's secret, evil, mutant son with three eyes who is not to be mistaken for Trioculus (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Trioculus), who was a different mutant with three eyes who pretended to be the Emperor's secret, evil, mutant son with three eyes.

The Abominor (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Abominor), a race of immortal robot monsters from another galaxy who made the Yuuzhan Vong afraid of technology. The first appearance of a member of their species in Star Wars media was The Great Heep (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Great_Heep), a giant pile of garbage that ate robots who appeared in a 1980s cartoon special starring C-3PO and R2-D2.

And Jaxxon (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Jaxxon/Legends), an anthropomorphic green rabbit who hung out with Han Solo and bore a weird resemblance to cartoon character Bucky O'Hare (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucky_O%27Hare). Note that this was one of the characters Disney decided to  make part of the canon Star Wars universe (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Jaxxon).

Two names that should've been on the name list: Borborygmus Gog (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Borborygmus_Gog) and Mammon Hoole (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Mammon_Hoole). They were even involved in Project Starscream, which was mentioned in the Hologram Fun World article.

I got basically every passing reference in this episode, in case you wanted to know how much of a terrible nerd I am.

Anyways, Star Wars is really fucking dumb and I can't stop learning more about it.

Insufferable SW Nerd time! (Wookieepedia editing was my pastime when I was 12.) That story was published in Star Wars Tales under the Infinities label, meaning that it was always considered non-canon.

The EU version is that R2-D2 purposely sabotaged the droid, meaning the cute sidekick character from the film is really both ruthless and amoral when it comes to completing his mission, willing to cripple/ potentially kill innocent individuals of his kind if it helps him finish his job faster.

The Disney version tries to fix this by having the red droid wake up while R2  is attempting to sabotage him. R2 then explains his mission to stop the Death Star, and the other droid consents to the sabotage and even self-sabotages himself. So canon R2 is just as ruthless, but just doesn’t get the opportunity to act on that. Which is somehow better?

While Skippy does share the stupidity of the EU, it misses the telltale signs of needless cruelty that pervades it.

Man, did I completely waste my childhood.

I loved this episode, I've never enjoyed anything Star Wars related, and I've got about the same amount of contempt for it that Lemon or Bozarth do, because it's everywhere and it's so fucking dumb. Oh, you like science fiction? I love Star Wars, let me talk to you about it because you're a nerd and clearly love it because it's set in space.

But even if you like Star Wars, what's the mindset required to go "Hmm, Wookiepedia doesn't have an article about toenails, yet you clearly see Princess Leia barefoot and she has toes! I must let everyone know!"?

There's two origin points I can see for Wookiepedia's tiny useless detail fetish.

One comes from Star Wars material itself: because the movies make a bunch of reference to things that wouldn't necessarily exist in a space fantasy setting, a bunch of supplemental material emerged to explain what hell means when someone says "I'll see you in hell" or what a duck is in the phrase "we'll be sitting ducks". So you can't take for granted what 'hell' is, because someone went and said "Corellian mythology refers to the netherworld of the force as Hell, while other cultures call it Chaos or The Void."

That leads into reason number two: Because you can't take anything for granted, Wookiepedia's policy became to explain everything that showed up in Star Wars, and because there wasn't a clear policy distinction between, say, "Hell is a name for a region of the force" and "Breasts were usually found on mammals  or near-mammals" it meant that eventually everything wound up on the wiki.

After reading that, I decided to look up the explanation for how "X-wings" are named after a letter that doesn't exist in the Star Wars alphabet, which led me to the surprisingly familiar other Star Wars alphabet (http://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/High_Galactic_alphabet) and eventually to this very F Plus Jedi. I think another factor is that Wookieepedia branched off from Wikipedia in the days before editors started heavily cracking down on the "In Popular Culture" sections of articles. For anyone who doesn't remember, around 2005-2007 a lot of articles for things on Wikipedia had a section called "In Popular Culture" which, due to poor editorial oversight, were basically lists of every time something came up in a cartoon or tv show ("In episode 2 of Space Dandy, Space Dandy eats a bowl of ramen!"). Wikipedia eventually began to crack down on this sort of behavior and I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of users who were really into making those sections migrated to places like Wookieepedia and other niche wikis.

I also feel like a lot of nerds, particularly the sorts of nerds who were into programming at the internet in the early 2000s, have a really mechanical and structured way of perceiving the world which causes them to treat things like fiction in much the same way one would treat information relating to the hard sciences: As a collection of facts and information. This tends to result in the kind of mindset you see from places like Wookieepedia or TV Tropes: A desire to catalog and identify minutiae without any sort of understanding of how this information fits together into a larger whole.

Okay, so a long-dormant memory just came back to me and it's that I KNOW WHAT THE BISCUIT BARON IS A REFERENCE TO.

I liked comics as a young kid, but my parents had no concept of, say, getting me the same comic in sequential issues, so there were titles that I had literally one issue of. Star Wars happens to be one of those. I have only literally only ever owned one issue of the Marvel Star Wars comics, but the guy that the Biscuit Baron logo is referencing was the villain in that comic. He's some guy that took Luke's lightsaber and then Luke got it back. That's about it. And his glasses actually looked like that.

This is easily up there as a new favourite of mine. The material is incredible and the jokes were 100% on point all the way through.

I love star wars a lot, both genuinely and because he entire idea of the whole thing is completely bonkers.

As we've seen from this episode, and also most of the newer films, and also the last 40 years of Trekkies, almost everything about star wars is insane, unnecessary, overwrought, grade a bullshit. S tier nonsense. The original trilogy are genuinely good fantasy films with the rare bonus strength of having a space setting but saying fuck you to the trappings of actual science fiction, and they somehow manage that despite literally everything else about Star Wars being fucking nuts. It went off the rails basically immediately! Fucking jizz and the holiday special happened and basically none of that is evident in the films which were just like this is a blue musician and this is a tall hairy man, have fun!

Star Wars is one of those thing you couldn't create if you tried. It happened by accident (because it made enough money that no-one could be fired).

I'm still laughing at jokes from the episode that keep coming back to me as I type this.

Edit: oh and the thing I love about wookieepedia specifically is how you can immediately see shit go wild on literally every article. Like, the canon pages all read like perfectly normal fandom articles, like "The Max Rebo Band was a 12 member band..." and then you click legends and it says "the Max Rebo Band, also known as The Max Rebo Twelve and (originally) Evar Orbus and His Galactic Jizz-Wailers..." next to a psychedelic  poster full of naked aliens. Also shoutout to the capital His like Max Rebo is God.

I'm reminded of...

I've seen multiple Star Wars movies many times in theaters, and many times more on DVD.
I have a Millennium Falcon toy on my computer desk, and have spent tens and dozens of hours over the years watching Star Wars theory and lore videos on YouTube.

All that being said, I've never heard of 99% of the shit mentioned in this reading. What the freaking heck, how is this real?

I think Star Wars to me is kind of like the Space Shuttle.

The Space shuttle, we think of it as this cool sleek airplane-like thing flying through space right?

But really, it's just a big ass extremely delicate airplane that can't actually fly, and has a bunch of clunky bullshit strapped all over it just to get off the ground.

But once you strip away all the stupid shit that ruins its profile, and intentionally forget about the fact that its kind of dangerous and unreliable, you can still admire it and feel proud of what it did accomplish in spite of that.

Now I wonder if there's some Plinkett character insert in one of these cyclopean pages, sort of a "Secret of Nihm" rat porn lady killing her haters in her RPGs type-a deal. I looked it up, and all I got was a page for Kilian Plunkett (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Kilian_Plunkett), an artist. I wouldn't mention it otherwise, but in his wiki picture he looks like Mike Stoklasa, too, which I find a pretty funny coincidence on top of a coincidence.

For a while I avoided watching the Nerd Crew episodes because the irony on the thumbnails was so dense I thought it was sincere.

That's my RLM thumbnail story, goodbye!

So I've never seen any star wars movie except episode 1 when I was 11. I thought Amidala had very cool costumes and that's as much as I've ever engaged w the franchise/fandom, everything I know about it is just what I absorbed from the internet.

I'm assuming everything that is discussed in this episode happens on screen in the movies. The most recent one ended with them eating cake at a party, right?

I should have been less cryptic.

My favourite piece of Star Wars formerly-canon extended universe buffoonery is Jar Jar Binks' father who tried to kill himself because his son was way too shit.
This is from an official comic (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/George_R._Binks_(comic)). This is the type of shit Disney should be drawing from for their next thousand years of Star Wars content.

Star Wars Tales wasn't canon even back when everything was canon.  Which is a shame since they also had an issue where Indiana Jones went hunting for Bigfoot and found the crashed Millennial Falcon and Han Solo's skeleton in the cockpit.  Bigfoot was Chewbacca natch.

Also, a lot of the way too detailed descriptions are from West End Games.  They got in on the Star Wars action before everyone else and had carte blanche to make up whatever they wanted to fill in the backstory for their rpg source books.  And then a bunch of the first rounds of novels used that nonsense to help pad out the length of the books and made it stick around even longer.

I still have a ton of WEG books in my closet I should do something with.

I think my favorite thing about Wookieepedia is that its  sterile writing combined with Star Wars just being ridiculous in general makes the stuff written as a joke indistinguishable from the stuff that was meant to be taken seriously.

In their defense Star Wars is so fucking boring that retaining any information about it is a mental exercise.

Meanwhile Killer Instinct has kickass art and intelligent character design that puts graphic card box art circa 2002 to shame

I saw this video pop up on social media (haven't watched it) but I love how when something new that jedi can do shows up people have to scour through all of Star Wars canon where that might have come in useful and retroactively figure out why they didn't use it there, as well as for every other instance afterwards where the writer for a particular story forgets about that power or doesn't know about it because they don't have time to read every Star Wars story published since all their time is taken up with writing Star Wars stories apparently.

Lemon's hateful glee is one of the best things a person can witness.

I never imagined I'd hear Lemon even SAY Steven Universe.

While I'm at it, Lemon do you know how your friend's kid spells their donkey's name? Because I love that donkey and its name. Hotie? Hoatie? Please illuminate me.

Adramalech is absolutely in the extended universe, as is the Republic of Bimboland, apparently.

I can't stop breaking face. Most I've smiled in the office for awhile.

I feel like, when you have a laser sword that can cut through metal, it's probably not that big a deal to make a killing form.  Like, you can probably just waggle your laser sword vaguely around and murder a guy.

when you think about its pretty crazy that they're wielding swords at all, or not like doing some crazy telekinesis thing at the least.

I do not recommend thinking about it.

Post by: Puppy Time on March 14, 2020, 07:07:13 pm
The OT at least implied that the telekinesis was advanced-level shit, while the sabers are basically a more dangerous stick, and it's pretty easy to swing a stick around a bit.

I never finished the other trilogies, but I assume they made things all weird, even leaving aside the ocean of strange SF id that is the EU.

In extended universe stuff it was theorized that the force was used subconsciously constantly during lightsaber combat to keep the practitioners from accidentally cutting off their own legs or whatever when swinging around a weapon that can cut through anything, as well as intercept and usefully deflect laser blasts. Now that I've written this I am full of shame.

The biggest problem with the EU- and nerd discussion in general- is that the story is SUPPOSED to inspire questions of heroism and redemption and why Imperialism Bad, but apparently for a lot of fans the important thing to question is "Why would Han Solo say parsecs, which is a length measure? I MUST CLOSE THIS PLOT HOLE WITH SCIENCE! Which is definitely what the creators were focused on!"
