TV we've been watching lately #450
Scavenger's Reign (Max, 2023) - really enjoying this so far. Airs weekly on thursdays. A sci-fi modern cartoon about the surviving passengers of a crash-landed ship on a strange alien planet. A studio ghibli style emphasis on the strange rhythms and movements of the animal world, paired with a Cronenberg style body-horror-guts-and-viscera approach to those aforementioned strange life-cycles. The animation is wonderful and the images are astonishing and beautiful and horrifying. Ghibli by way of Junji Ito. LOTS of guts and viscera. Robots. Viscera. A tentative 4 stars while the rest of the season comes out.

EDIT: the series ends strongly! if you like sci fi horror if you like ghibli and guts you GOTTA see this. 4 stars because almost all of the voice acting is TERRIBLE. They should redub it.
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake: goddamn. this rules, man. The Better Call Saul to Adventure Time's Breaking Bad. 4.5 stars. Watch the entire season in one night, i think it's probably better that way.

severance - really incredible stuff. 5 stars

survivor s45 - really really good! survivor is one of the best tv shows ever and remains constantly relevant and thrilling. COVID made them change the format of the show (40+ years in!) and the new format is very good! there's three islands, people go more places and more different places, there's wonderful political gaming, the new season continues a return to form. 4.5 stars

vigil s1 - i love rose leslie (game of thrones, downton abbey, tv's the good fight (a the good wife spinoff), vin diesel (boo!) vanity project the last witchhunter) and submarine movies (manly men bound by strict codes of honour who are on suicide courses they are powerless to prevent; the men all-but-kiss) and this is that in a prestige BBC drama , but it's also more than that! a man dies on a british nuclear submarine (politically controversial today!) and the scottish police (rose😍 and tv's suranne jones) get to investigate. it turns out to be a murder and then there turns out to be POLITICAL INTRIGUE and suranne jones is TRAPPED UNDERSEA while she INVESTIGATES A MURDER. and she and rose leslie are ex-lovers and rose is worried on shore but feels weird about it. haven't seen s2 yet. 4 stars

the great pottery throwdown s6 - throwdown is back!!! bloke who cries at art keith brymer-jones and s1's "kiln man" Rich Miller are the judges in the best successor to the success of Bakeoff. they're joined again by host Siobhán Mcsweeney (Derry Girls' Sister Michael) and "kiln girl" Rose Schmits, a potter who followed me back on tumblr (!), and who seems very nice. Siobhán was absent in S5 because of an injury or something? and they had this great other host but now she's back. but she's a better fit for the show now so my issues with her are moot. and this cast is very strong. Some great illustrators, everyone seems to be real artists. There's a christmas special (famous british actors, and unlike last year's, they gave these ones a series of pottery lessons before they filmed the special). 5 stars
