You might be able to use "fill: white" or whatever color, although I'm not sure if that works with <img>'d SVGs or just just inline ones.

That wouldn't work in this case. You can only style inlined svgs, and these are svg as img tags.

Ambious' drop shadow idea is interesting, though.



A plainer option is to use filter: invert(100%), which works great on monochrome, less great on the colored icons.

I think I prefer it with 0px blur. The blur makes it standout more, like a neon sign. I suppose when people are using smileys though that's the point.

Had another thought.

You can chain filters off each other, so I could convert to greyscale, then invert, then lighten it up slightly from there.

Additionally, I could specifically select just the gifs and elect to not to that to those.

Which might be our best outcome at this point.
