To build on Frank West's explanation, it's the incel/MRA/PUA collective's quasi-Augustine wing. They admire religious asceticism and austere piety, but for them actually becoming religious is a no-go. So they secularize and technologize the part they think is the most relevant, i.e. don't touch the whangus, and make it into a devotional goal - "if I stop jerking it, I'll totally fix everything that's wrong with me and finally be able to get laid, just as as I prayed for just as my web buddies scientifically proved"
