Yuan Shang’s plan is to throw as many bodies at us as he can and try to force a breakthrough. It’s a good plan if you’re Ulysses S. Grant.
But here are some reasons why that’s not a good plan for Yuan Shang. First, he hasn’t cut off our ability to supply cities on the front from the fast-growing and prosperous cities to the south, so we can meet him with equivalent force anywhere he goes.
Second, we have the chance to attack his under-defended cities while his men are out on maneuvers, and we can resupply our attacks a lot faster than he can.
Third, we’ve got money and goodies rolling in from overseas.
Fourth, we’re rich enough to bribe barbarians to help us.
Fifth, we’ve got truly heroic generals.
And so, after a year of incessant combat, two more enemy cities fall.
Our alliances with Ma Teng and Sun Ce expire, and they see the writing on the wall.
And so, we control over half of China.
